Alternative to Billmonk?

Who knows of a great alternative to billmonk now that it is gone? I've tried Buxfer, scred, Billshare, and a bunch of others, but none work as well as BillMonk once did. Ideally I want a service that connects to/has a facebook application, has a mobile or iphone app, and works consistently and logically on the web. It's starting to look like this is a big missing space that I just might need to start working on myself...

  • Hi,

I've used splitmybill.ie in the past and while I loved the service at the start it began to behave really strange so my friends and i switched to billmonk. Some of the problems we experienced with splitmybill included bills which re-split (and email notifications sent out) months after they were put on the site and some random shuffles.

I haven't used the site in over 1/2 years but again a few weeks ago i received an email from splitmybill saying I had created a debt shuffle. so while billmonks uptime isn't great at least we can trust the information it hold on our bill unlike splitmybill when decides to randomly add bills every so often!!

There's also Dividely (dividely.com). I've been using it to post automatic monthly rent and utility bills. I track plenty of other house debts and repayments with it too, because it keeps a nice running tally for each friend, and we can square up whenever. Been using it for about 2 years, no problems. Also has a mobile webapp.

    • Hi Jon, I tried it out and it was really cool! Thanks! Just a suggestion, it was hidden under settings, can we move it to Dashboard?
The groups feature is unusable until you allow me to add existing friends :)
    • I disagree about quick responses from splitwise. I have send 2 detailed emails asking where bulk delete is and another about multiple split, but where more than 1 pays. Never got a response. So if that was what you were referring to as fast, should I be impressed?

    Hey there ex-Monkers,

Splitwise now has a BillMonk importer, so you take your expenses straight from BillMonk to Splitwise! You can read about it on the Splitwise blog.

Selfishly (I'm a co-founder of Splitwise), I would argue Splitwise is a great free alternative to BillMonk, with a beautiful web interface and native Android and iPhone apps to track shared expenses.

I've attached some screenshots below, and you can read some reviews to judge for yourself: New York Times,
Lifehacker (under our old name SplitTheRent), KillerStartups, Appstorm, or our iPhone App Store reviews or Google Play reviews.

Sadly, our Android reviews are not so good since we haven't been updated since last year, but our new Android app is coming 8/21/2012. I'd be happy to send anyone an advance copy who wants one - android@splitwise.com.

We have improved our feature set a bunch since Splitwise first posted here - we have a snazzier interface, support ad-hoc friendships and cost sharing (not just groups), and added support for itemized receipts.).

We still don't support "shuffling" in the way that BillMonk conceives of it (we always "autoshuffle" within groups, and each group is separate from friendships), but we now do support the "friends" system and are planning to add some features over the next month or so that achieve the same goals as BillMonk uses shuffling for.

If you don't like Splitwise, many other alternatives are listed on the Quora forum about BillMonk replacements.

If you have any complaints or suggestions, feel free to reach out to us at monkrefugees@splitwise.com - we are very responsive via email.

    Cheers!
    Jon

  • Hi ya,

I use Whosebill (www.whosebill.com) and think it’s brilliant!

I have been a regular user for over 2 years and use it mainly for shared holidays and for individual loans with my friends and family, on a frequent basis or one off. It’s never been down whenever I’ve logged on which sounds like a problem with Billmonk.

It’s free, really easy to use and you can create groups/pools, invite new friends and find existing ones to put into pools. Recording the split of bills is simple too, and it works out the percentage and amount for you. Got lots of currencies for holidays abroad and there’s not been one I’ve needed which they’ve not had. I’ve always liked the clear layout and believe there is a mobile app coming out very soon and if the website is anything to go by, that’ll be just as quick and easy.
Another bonus of Whosebill is that it’s simple and clear enough for my retired mum to use (she’s not very computer literate)! I do have to sometimes think though if it’s a loan or borrowed money and just check I’ve got it going the right way. Mum wrote a help mail to them which was answered really promptly too.

There’s a brief tour of the website (www.whosebill.com) which you can do when you log on too so if you’re new or not a regular user then that could be useful. I’d certainly recommend having a look and giving it a go.

  • Yup, billmonk keeps going down!

We got frustrated, that’s why we are building a new billmonk – BillPin.com is coming soon

Meanwhile - backup your billmonk data as soon as possible, get a copy of it before billmonk is permanently gone!

Back up your billmonk data before it’s too late! (the system will send you a nice PDF)

  • I just started using BillPin recently, and I have to say it's better than any other apps I have tried. All the cons listed above do not apply to BillPin which is why I made the switch. Their interface, both the app and web, are very neat and simple. It's extremely user-friendly, and you can also import all your BillMonk data onto BillPin (http://billmonkbackup.com/).

BillPin is highly recommended. I have a feeling that BillPin is going to be the next BillMonk...without dying. Lol.

  • The best app by far for splitting bills and roommate expenses is SpotMe. My roommate and I have used SpotMe since the time they launched in 2011, and love it! It is super-easy to use, beautiful and totally reliable.

SpotMe does not have all the itemization features we used to have on Billmonk but the ease of use and functionality way over-compensate. The best thing about SpotMe is that it has an awesome integration for friendships and connections (including Facebook and Twitter friends). You can literally create a new split bill in no time.

    I highly recommend it.
