Moving files from my desktop to another folder. The file is moved but a ghost copy remains on the desktop. The gosh icon cannot be selected... erased...

Anything on the desktop at the time TotalFinder starts seems to become part of a layer that sits between the actual files and the wallpaper - if you move the files then an image of them remains, but it sits above the wallpaper (i.e if you change the wallpaper, the images remain).

Steps to reproduce:
- Put items on desktop
- Relaunch Finder
- Start TotalFinder
- Move items off desktop - images remain
- Relaunch Finder - images disappear
- Put items back on desktop
- Start TotalFinder
- Move items off desktop - images are back

This is on a dual monitor setup, in case that's a factor.

btw I believe the OP meant "ghost" icon.

also if you hide/show invisible/hidden files it can also reproduce the ghosted icons

Got the same problem (with a single monitor) which is a shame considering I already like a lot TotalFinder concept aside from this pretty inconvenient bug.

I'm not able to reproduce this problem, seems to be a rare bug... could you provide any other detail? Other applications that deals with the desktop are active? Any idea?

I didn't mean rare referring to your experience, but to the whole total of TF users!

Woah that's really weird! Sure this should be fixed ASAP...
Thinking about new code in TF 1.0 that may have something to do with this, two things comes to mind:
- the new Folders On Top code
- the Desktop does not show dot files even when you check "Show System Files" fix (that seems more likely)

I hope Antonin will catch quickly on this one, please don't give up!

I have reported the same problem on GetSatisfaction at:
http://getsatisfaction.com/binaryage/...

These should probably be combined so that an accurate # of people having this problem is reported.

It's very strange since no one else seems to have this problem. Could you post a screenshot?

By the way you may try to delete Finder's preferences, this may do the trick. The plist is located at username/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist

This worked for me. Give it a try

For the sake of completeness, this fix only works short term. I've disabled TotalFinder for the time being.

Using 1.0 (paid). Noticed an image of every icon on the desktop. Thought about everything I did since noticing this. Had implemented TotalFinder tweak "Folders on Top." Unchecked it, relaunched Finder, started TotalFinder again and no more duplicate images. I also did this before unchecking "Folders on top" and the images were still there. So, seems to be a bug in "Folders on top." Using Mac OSX 10.6.4 on 24" iMac.

I have deleted finder.plist 5 times and it has not fixed the problem. In fact, it is worse when "bare bones" Finder comes up and I start TotalFinder again. Before removing the .plist, the ghost image would only occur if I enabled "Folders on Top." After I delete the .plist and relaunch, the ghost images are there using default Finder preferences and default TotalFinder preferences.

"Finally" I happened to have this issue too...
I can't get what triggered it the fist time for me since I don't usually use Folders on Top, but after a few tries I can confirm that toggling Folders on Top setting basically breaks something. While toggling the feature ALWAYS messes up the Desktop, in my case keeping the setting always on only messes the Desktop the first time, than subsequent reboots or Finder relaunches don't have any bad effect on my Desktop.

Applied update (1.01). Enabled "Folders on Top." Still ghost icons. Relaunched Finder. No better. Deleted finder.plist (after making backup copy). Relaunched Finder and TotalFinder. Still no better. Tried another relaunch of Finder. Still no better. Deleted new finder.plist and put back my original backed-up finder.plist. Relaunched Finder and TotalFinder. Everything now fine - no ghosts! Go figure cause I can't.

Sadly, 1.0.1 didn't solve the problem for me...

While right after installing the update I was able to toggle Folders on Top without ghosts showing up, after some minutes the problem rose again...

I thought that dealing with desktop icons, deleting Desktop's .DS_Store file could have been helpful... but it doesn't seem to make any difference :/

So this is probably not related to Folders on Top... I will continue in investigation. Unfortunately I'm unable to reproduce it.

Maybe not right with the implementation, but it HAS to do something with Folders on Top, since toggling the feature always generate ghost icons :/

Antonin,

Just want to add my voice about the ghost icon after moving a file.
I have to quit TotalFinder for the ghost icon to go away.

Another voice for the issue (10.6.4 x64). Haven't had it before, got it after upgrading to 1.0.1, and only restarting Finder (TotalFinder turns off after that) helps. Its makes the Desktop almost unusable.
Disabling folders on top fixes the issue after some cycles of reboot. Deleting /Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist doesn't worked,

I can provide you remote access to one of mine workstations if needed for understanding where the issue came from.

TF still works the same even after trial expires. You just get "unregistered - version" in the window title.
