Totalfinder and Archive Utility not playing nice

  • Problem
  • Updated 2 years ago

After installing Totalfinder, Mountain Lion's built in Archive Utility becomes unresponsive when trying to expand zip files, leaving no option but force quitting. I seem to be able to compress files just fine, I just can't open them.

An uninstall of Totalfinder and reboot fixes the problem, as soon as I reinstall though, Archive utility stops working again. Please help!

This is real problem. I was able to reproduce it here.

It is the same problem as "Reveal in Finder" does not work. For some reason Apple Events stop working. It does not work even after relaunching Finder without TotalFinder. A restart is needed.

I'm investigating it. Stay tuned.

Thanks so much for responding. I'm currently nearing the end of my trial period, and plan to purchase once this issue is fixed - Totalfinder is a great product!

I found a quick workaround. When this happens you need to quit "appleeventsd" process via Activity Monitor (switch to All Processes).

Something bad happens to that daemon and it stops delivering some apple events to Finder. This is probably some bug in TotalFinder (or some other software) which got exposed in 10.8.2

After few hours of investigation I have to conclude this is a bug on Apple's side introduced in 10.8.2.

It affects plain Finder without TotalFinder involved. Here are repro steps which lead to blocked appleeventsd (not always but very often):
0. launch Finder
1. in Console.app use "Reveal in Finder" on some items (at least two)
2. in Terminal app execute "open ."
3. osascript -e "tell application \"Finder\" to quit"; sleep 1; osascript -e "tell application \"Finder\" to launch"
4. goto [1]

After several cycles Reveal in Finder stops working. Also Archive Utility becomes unresponsive since then. Reveal in Finder from spotlight stops working and bunch of other apps which depend on the same mechanism.

After downloading a file in Chrome, I right-click it and select "show in finder" to see and manipulate the file. This does not work.

Any way I can fix this?

Expanding zip and tar.gz files from within the Finder no longer works correctly since installing TotalFinder - the Archive app often hangs part way through.

Hi!

Since I've upgraded to Mac OS X 10.8.2 and TotalFinder 1.4.1, I can't reveal a file or folder in TotalFinder from Alfred.

I filed a ticket on Alfred's board but upon further investigations it looks like the issue comes from TF itself. You can see the thread here for more informations.

MacBook Air / Mountain Lion / Using both TotalSpace and TotalFinder:
If you download a file in Chrome and you click on the thumb at the bottom of Chrome window (the arrow) and select 'show in finder' nothing happens. I've tried to open a new finder window in the same space in case that's the problem but no, it simply doesn't work.

You might already be aware of it. Are you able replicate the issue?

My problem arises with apps that allow a command-click on the name in the Title Bar to drop down a folder List.

I would expect the selected folder to open in the Finder. Right now nothing happens.

The latest version of Total Finder does not allow "Show in Finder" for downloads in Chrome or from Mac Spotlight. A shame, as it was working well before.

TotalFinder 1.4.2 appears to break MacOS unzip utility (MacOS 10.8.2). After installing TotalFinder, doubleclicking on a zipped file launched the unzip utility, but the utility never completed and auto closed. This was working correctly before and after having TotalFinder demo running.
