Monitoring your mic levels in Studio

Why isn't there a VU in the Studio or a way to check your microphone levels? This is an essential feature IMO.

Please add this feature. I would say that for ROJS Radio, and I believe other hosts, this would be add on they would prefer. Keep us updated on this! Thanks.

  • We absolutely need this feature!! I have two cohosts who are with me on each show, I'm too low in level, one cohost is clear, the other one is way too jarring and loud. I really would love to have the ability to change the sound levels for each person. In addition, what comes out on the recording or over the air differs from what I hear on the phone when I'm doing my show, everyone sounds like they are at a good level while I'm doing the show over the phone, but when I listen to the recording I hear what my listeners are complaining about. The levels are way too different for each speaker. Here is feed back from one of my listeners;

    "Hi Lisa,

I've been a Between Heaven and Earth listener for about a year now. I think
the show is great and I look forward to it every month. I just listened to
the Spirit Guides one and it was great.

I have one request about your show. I ask that you look into the sound
levels on your show. As a listener, I hear you broadcasting at a low sound,
and Renee is at a medium sound and sweet Anne Marie is super loud. When
you're talking for the first part, I usually have to turn my speakers up
high and then Ann Marie says something and it makes me jolt because she is
so loud. It's very nerve wracking.

I'm sure the talk show hosts don't notice it but if you listen to the
broadcasts it can get bothersome. I would just like to sit back and listen
instead of constantly turning my speakers up and down.

Other than that please keep up the great work."

    Please help!!!!

Lisa K. Between Heaven and Earth show.

p.s. I am a Premium user/member and I pay $250 a month for this service, I'd like to have more control over the volume levels of callers. THANKS!!!!

We definitely need this feature for hosts, it's really important to know what our volumes are compared to audio files, when you are doing an intro/outro.

Also, if there is a way to have volume control/mixer capabilities for callers, as well.

    ...but of course!
Go into any studio and one must be able to regulate all volume levels. KYC-a CBS station in Philly does, 88.9AM at Burlington County College, NJ does and my lap-top and iPhone have these features.
Come into the 19th Century Blog Talk Radio and we the hosts promise not to tell!
Seriously though, make it happen, Captain.

Our host is always way too low, and we assure you he is talking loud in the room, and using land line, tried another land line, even tried a cell phone so it is not the equipment, and way too low. About to give up with BlogTalkRadio.

This is a necessity - what are you waiting for? Why do you need our encouragement. Just do it please - I am having all sorts of inconsistencies with producer Vs Host volumes etc.

OVER A YEAR AGO SINCE FIRST POST!!!!! - how much time do you need? I get so many complaints about this site form users also. You guys really need to be more proactive and build this studio to be more like the real deal.

I think this is essential. Also, when are you going to improve the overall sound quality. In order for me to put out a radio quality show, I have to record it on the different machine then put it out to iTunes and other feeds through a different service. These would seem like essential pieces to the puzzle.

It is not a "studio" really if you have no control over levels of the caller and mike. It's very annoying recording a show to listen later and find out the levels are way off sometimes, yet fine other times depending upon caller phone connections etc.

Yes, we need this feature, this is basic - not a bell and wistle. Stop playing with new players that we don't need or ask for, flash features that we don't ask for, make a priority what we who are using the system want and need. Although it has been stated before, I agree, we need to be able to balance the level of co-hosts and callers.

  • Absolutely. It doesn't make sense to have a business model based on what is audible, and a product based on sound, and have no way for the customer to know what their sound is! Not only should they have ready access to checking their sound, they should have the ability to modulate that sound, to add bass and some minor improvements, to generate a more professional product. Having to coordinate multiple people in a "studio" and not knowing what their "input" is almost ensures a poor product. My folks and I have discussed trying to do some "live broadcasts" and we purchased a great mic for such (laptop-usb based) but, even after upgrading to a premium account, we lack confidence the product we could generate would validate the decision in a positive way. Thanks.

OMG! This is ANOTHER problem I am having that apparently was ignored for over a year! I was in another thread where we were told sound improvement was coming "soon"...that too was over a year ago. Now my newest problem is this...I host via Skype using a hardwired internet connection. I do one of the Skype test calls before every show. We sound GREAT. We call into our BTR studio and broadcast for two hours. We play back the show and can BARELY hear ourselves talk! Out mic levels are maxed and as I said, we sound just fine during the Skype test call playback.
So I researched this latest BTR annoyance and LO AND BEHOLD, there's yet ANOTHER thread with dozens of hosts doing exactly what was asked of them over a year ago in reference to the lack of ability to control our mic levels...to "weigh in." Seems to me many have done just that...yet nothing is different. I see a pattern developing of promises of improvement on the horizon being made yet the only thing I've seen change in BTR in the last year is the website's cosmetics and new players. Why? To make the glorious AM sound and barely audible hosts look better in a different player? Audio quality is and should be the ABSOLUTE top priority...not website cosmetics or fancy players that have nothing to do with improvement to the one thing that matters most to EVERY show host...BETTER SOUND IN 2013. This is really getting ridiculous and I can't believe I happened upon this thread which is exactly the same as the CD sound thread where changes are promised and more than a year passes. Multiply $40 x 12 months which was largely spent assuming there REALLY WERE improvements coming! That's a lot of loot to spend when nothing is different over a year later. I am really at the end of my rope with BTR. It really shouldn't be this headache-inducing for hosts paying GOOD MONEY to have a decent sounding show in 2013. We simply aren't getting all that we should/could be for the money we spend as Premium members. We're getting stuff we don't need like a pretty BTR site and fancy players to play crappy audio. If that's what my $40 contributes to, I have no desire to continue to do that...a pretty site doesn't help my show sound good...which is all that matters to hosts...how their shows sound.

  • Audio is hurting my Christian Radio Broadcast "BonaFide Talk". My NOW PROMOTER was HONEST with me and told me that the sound quality of the audios AND my voice was poor. I was considering upgrading to the Premium Package UNTIL I read the post above mine by PRL. God's Kingdom business is quality business. Will you advise?

  • BonaFide;

I am sorry but I have nothing to add which will help you. BTR seems to have fixed the problem I had with my show cutting off after 1 hour instead of 2. For 2 weeks now it has worked fine so... they seem to have taken care of that. I have no idea how much software programming would be required for them to include monitoring volume levels but I am sure it would be considerable. The question is probably market-driven. Is there a competitor with the range of services BTR has who also has the volume readings? I don't know. I know it ticks me off I can't read and adjust my volume levels on the fly.

I think some folks are expecting too much out of the product. BTR is not meant to provide the quality of a music station. It is intended to be a diverse "talk radio" station. That being said we all want the talk to be done professionally and I don't think they want to lose revenue because they cannot keep people due to what should be a minor technical issue. On the other hand, if there is no competitor to create a revenue loss for them why should they net less just to make a few people happy? So that tells me they have made the decision they would rather lose a few broadcasters here and there than to spend the money on the upgrades. If you want to use the resulting product then use it and (I am saying this to everyone) quit whining about it. You are paying your money every month and you keep coming back so it must not bother you that much. If it does bother you - quit! Get out! Send a message you are an unhappy consumer. That is how business works.

All this complaining will get you nowhere. They are business people. They know it is needed and they have evaluated the market and they have decided not to do anything. You are beating a dead horse. Ride another one if it bothers you that much. Bottom line. Invest your time in higher quality programming or finding another vendor.

    Thanks,
    Mike

  • Sound quality of our broadcasts suck..simply put. Music fine... guests and hosts.. can't hear very well, no matter what we do..and even when volume turned up to the fullest and bought new equipment to help.. I agree with those who said stop whining... I will..and we are looking for alternative methods to broadcast. Obviously they are not seriously fixing this issue....

  • Well in my opinion, Mike's post makes zero sense to me. He raises some valid points but it is his conclusion that I disagree with. If BTR is not meant to broadcast music with some semblance of audio quality, then WHY are we offered the pod safe music selections? End of story. If you are offering music,it's common sense you are ALSO simultaneously claiming your platform supports music. So Mike's points above are inaccurate. Either BTR supports music or it doesn't, and if it doesn't then that should CLEARLY be a disclaimer that says "BTR does not recommend broadcasting music on our platform." So don't preach that the platform isn't meant to play music when the platform itself provides us with a catalog of music. Fact is the sound on this platform sucks. It's easily the worst feature. As far as leaving BTR, at this point I would love to. It's painful to listen to our shows. At max volume I can barely hear us talk. It's a crap system...end of story. If it wasn't there wouldn't be so, so, so, so many people complaining about it.
i give credit where it's due...and I LOVE everything about this platform...the customer service is phenomenal and the studio isn't bad. It's the sound that is the downfall of BTR. All these people complaining here, and in many, many other threads can't be wrong. Fact is BTR would completely obliterate it's competitors if they brought in stereo sound. There is no doubt in my mind. They would also probably get TONS more people signing up. So yeah, they'd spend money on the upgrade, but it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out (based on the aforementioned many posts by others about this) that if they did that, they would make a lot more money through new members.
Besides, my initial complaints have surpassed simply being about the poor sound itself, my complaint is that we were told well over a year ago that improvements were coming...and they haven't. Even here in this very thread!!! Go read John's post at the top...from OVER A YEAR AGO! How does John's post sound now over a year later? Have YOU seen any of those changes he claims they were working on over a year ago? I haven't. All I've seen is cosmetic site design changes that do NOTHING to better the service for the paying broadcasters. Instead they seem to be more focused on roping in more suckers through a pretty site look. That's supposed to make me happy after a year of BTR taking $40 from us all predicated on a promise that never happened? Sorry, no one would be happy. I could listen to one of shows from last week or last year and they both sound like crap. As far as Mike's advice to "just leave BTR"...believe me I would LOVE to. If you can talk my wife into giving up the ghost then by all means do so as she's the only reason we're still here. She keeps holding onto this false hope that stereo sound is coming. Maybe one day she will realize the folly of her pipe dreams. We have the same argument every month when we are debited for BTR but since it's her account that pays for it, my influence on her is limited in terms of getting her to agree it's time to move to one of the other sites with quality sound. Enough is enough. As I said, if I can take time to complain about what I don't like, I can also take time to compliment BTR. I have...everything about this platform is wonderful...except the terrible sound and unfortunately NOTHING is more important than sound quality on a broadcasting site.

  • I don't understand. I listened to the Tavis Smiley show and the sound was, and is fantastic. BTR does recommend that people buy the RemoteMix2. It sells for $698. Do you think this device will help?

RemoteMix 2 is a two-channel field mixer / headphone amplifier built for the remote broadcast environment. More than just a field mixer, RemoteMix 2 provides a communications interface for remote broadcast, IFB, or a backup audio path. The integrated headphone amplifier provides sidetone to monitor all inputs plus an external feed. RemoteMix 2 features a phone line hybrid with keypad along with a wired notebook/cell phone headset interface. All sections are designed to work together, saving setup time and wiring in the field.

Radio - RemoteMix 2 is perfect for live remotes. Use it as a front-end mixer for your POTS, ISDN, IP or smart phone codec. Use it as a phone line hybrid, calling in to your studio talk show hybrid.
