II use Boardmaker 6 Plus and it is possible. You just assign the variable on the first board, and adjust the variable on the other boards. That's how my new Dolch groups work, as well as my counting activities. When you on your first board select that change board command, you leave the "Preserve message" checked, and it continues the countt to the next board. At the end, if you want to reset the count, you uncheck the "preserve message" button and the next board drops that information.
    Hope this helps!

You are right-it would just reset back to your initially set value, if that's the board you defined the variable on. I would try then having a cover board that sets the variable.
I usually do a menu board with several selections. You could set a board action of setting a variable on that. (You wouldn't see it, and it would automatically set.) Another option would be a title page for your activity, and you'd set your variable on it, also in your board actions. Either of those would make it so returning from your popup would not lose the value.
    Hope this makes sense! :)
