Can I make Boardmaker play nice with Notebook?

I want to link several Boardmaker activities to a Smartboard Notebook file. This would make a nice independent center. The first activity the student selects will open in Use mode when Boardmaker is not previously open, but when the student clicks on the next activity it opens in Design mode. Is there a way to set the Start Page for each activity to open in Use mode? If not, is there a way to imbed the task (apple u) in a button on the Start Page so the student can put the activity in Use mode independently? Several of them are too short to reach the tool bar themselves and I sure don't want them doing the command on my computer. Thanks in advance!!

  • It should open up the activity in whatever mode you last left Boardmaker in, so if you were in Use mode then it should not be switching you to Design mode.

Is this not working correctly for you? If so, can you say what version of BM+ you're using, and what operating system - sounds like you're on a Mac?

    • I am using Boardmaker Plus version 6.1..4 on an iBookG4. I understand what you are saying, if we end in Use mode it should not switch us to Design mode. However, to end an activity I have to go back to Design mode and close the first activity. As a result, when we open the next activity it opens in Design mode, which was the last mode we were in. Maybe my question should be how to end an activity without going into Design mode?

I found a nice template on BoardmakerShare for the quizzes to the News 2 You newspapers. My students enjoy doing the quizzes on the SmartBoard as an independent activity. However, in order to move to the next quiz, an adult has to go into Design mode to close the current quiz, select the next quiz, and put it into Use mode. I realize I can link them all together in Boardmaker (by changing board to the start page of the next quiz), but that does not allow me to mix up the order in which the quizzes appear. I thought maybe I could link the quizzes to objects on a Notebook page, which would allow the students to open/close each quiz and vary the order in which they do the quizzes. I did find an option to that would let the student put the activity in Design mode (settings > design mode); the student would then have to close the activity by tapping the red skittle, select the next activity, then use (dynamic boards > use) to put the activity in Use mode. The taller students could be taught to do this, but there are a couple of shorties in the room.

  • You can keep the menu bar visible in use mode, so that you can access the File menu to open the next activity. Go to the Dynamic Boards menu, select Show->Menu Bar in Use Mode.

Another approach would be to make a "menu" board that links to all your activities, then make all your activities link back to your menu board. That way you can choose which one to open from within Use mode in Boardmaker.
