Issue with Boardmaker 6.1.6 on macOS Sierra 10.12.3 and boards "locking up" while multitasking

Issue with Boardmaker 6.1.6 (237) on macOS Sierra 10.12.3. Since we've upgraded we've had regular issues with the program locking up when creating boards. It appears to be a time issue, where if a new board is created and saved right away there is no issue, but if a new board is created, and then stays open for a period of time while someone is working on it or multi-tasking, that board eventually "locks up" as to where it can't be saved or even closed (it can still be minimized and moved in that state). When this happens it is still possible to create new ones and/or open other existing boards when one or more of the open boards freezes. The only way we've found to clear the frozen board(s) is to completely close down and reopen the app. Very frustrating as it requires us to get out the external DVD drive again to launch the app and verify the disc again. Prior to macOS Sierra this was not an issue. Also tried reinstalling multiple times from the disc. Any ideas on how to resolve the issue would be appreciated. Thank you.

  • Hello,

The only way to really resolve it is what you are already doing which is Saving the board immediately after creating it and then doing your work and then saving it again. It should save fine when doing it in that order.

  • I'm having the same problem with os 10.12.6 - it's very frustrating because I couldn't save what I had added to the board. For a temporary fix, I copied all the cells in the board, and then pasted them in a new board and saved it with a new name. Not ideal though - would love a fix from you guys on this. Thank you.

  • Will there be any Patches made to resolve this problem ?
Our school can not afford to purchase the Web Base version.

  • Another work around, incase "Edit-Select All" and "Edit-Copy" are disabled is to drag select everything in your document, then drag and drop it into a new, saveable document window.

  • Is anyone getting a big white rectangle that almost covers the screen when you start up a file in 10.12.? I can't move it or close it but I can open other apps over it. It goes away when I shut biardmaker down.

Boardmaker - could you please work on a fix for these issues???!! My district cannot afford the web version and we use boardmaker all the time for our students. I would hate to think you aren't updating the cd versions just to force people to buy the online versions. Just think of all the students that we are working with that will be affected....
    • Hi Charlene. I have not seen that white rectangle issue before. Could you provide some screenshots of that? Also, does it happen on all your boards or just some?

To answer your second request. The software you are using was the 6th generation of that product and was released in 2007. We have maintained, updated, and supported it for 10 years. Much of the technology used in that software is out of date and will eventually not be supported by Microsoft and Apple. We’d be happy to keep selling Boardmaker with SD Pro forever, but that’s not possible. Our plan is to keep supporting our customers in any way we can, but we are no longer able to update the software to accommodate changes that come from Microsoft and Apple.

    Hi Brad-

I've attached a screen grab showing the frozen white rectangle in Boardmaker with os 10.12. You can't move it, but can move other windows in Boardmaker or other windows from different apps. It won't go away until you quit Boardmaker.

I understand the the changes in technology, but your company has always charged a huge amount of money for the applications, with very little discounts for district purchases or multiple copies. It's a little hard to take when the software is meant to help kids communicate and sometimes we can't afford enough software for the classrooms. The yearly online subscription prices are just too high for our district to commit to every year. I don't see why you can't make a network or online version that is affordable, or offer a one time online price. Sorry to rant, but it seems like your company would make just as much money if you offered more low cost solutions and then more people/districts could afford to buy the products.

    Regards-
    Charlene

  • Sorry for the delay in responding. After 12 years (Mac v6 was launched in 2006) in the market, we decide that we will continue to fully support Boardmaker V6 for Mac through Mac OS Version 10.11.6, however there will not be any updates for OS versions beyond that. The WIndows version is not affected by this deciision. We encourage you to explore the benefits of Boardmaker Online as an alternative,

No, you're going to keep supporting PC and NOT MAC? We paid good money for 35 copies of the MAC version, what credit are you going to provide me? Now you want me to pay for a Monthly Seat License? WIll you convert my 35 copies to the Online version with no charge? Otherwise I suggest you create a path for MAC.

I totally agree. I purchased Boardmaker with my OWN money, not “school money” and i don’t have it like that. This is so unfair. I want a refund. I can’t even use BM on my laptop anymore because it is not compatible with the Mac OS Sierra. Totally unacceptable. And I’m not paying for a Membership.

I agree completely. Boardmaker does not seem to support Mac computers anymore. I had to purchase a new computer and now my Boardmaker is very problematic. I also purchased the software on my own and have updated on a regular basis and purchased additional visuals each year. Have you tried LessonPix? $36 a year and will replace Boardmaker for many of us. I might be willing to pay for Boardmaker online but have tried it using three different emails I have and hate it each time. I'm not willing to pay $99 a year for a product that I don't like. Boardmaker, what are you going to do for Mac users. We are a large group and you will end up losing money from us. Perhaps you don't care. I would even be willing to purchase an updated version of Boardmaker but no Mac version exists anymore! What the heck!

I'm glad I saw this page before I purchased Boardmaker for Mac for my new computer (with my own money). I have tons of boards made on my old PC. It seems like they only want online. I agree with others, I don't like it as well. I tried Lesson Pix, but I have 18 years of boardmaker files and I'm an old dog....

  • I agree with you Michelle - I have thousand of boards from almost 20 years of use. I ended up purchasing a my own used MacBook and had them keep the system at 10.11 so boardmaker will work - now I only have to keep it working for the next 5 years until I retire. I do this so I can support the children in my K class to access the curriculum - something that the staff at Mayer Johnson seems to have forgotten about.

Man this is sooo disappointing. I have the same problem with my MAC and also have over 20 years of boards that support students and teachers.... I am begging and pleading to update the mac version. Boardmaker online is slow and just takes me so much longer...... I have been a big fan of boardmaker and have worked for several districts in which they buy several copies...... and now I might have to start using something different so frustrating.
