Breville BKE820XL stopped working - won't "start"

  • Question
  • Updated 6 months ago
I bought a Breville BKE820XL variable temperature kettle a few months ago. It suddenly isn't working. The temperature settings light up, as well as the start button, but when you push start, nothing happens (i.e., it won't heat up). Is there a reset button or something?

Hi Natalie,
Is there a re-set button or blown fuse in your kitchen? Otherwise there may be an issue with the heating element.

I have this problem too - it's obviously not to do with the fuse in the kitchen as the white lights appear on my BKE820XL electric kettle, but when I hit the start button, it doesn't boil. I've read somewhere there is a trip switch, but I have no idea where to begin looking for that.

I got my Breville Variable Temperature Kettle about 6 months ago. It worked fine until this morning. The red light comes on when I push the start button but the water does not heat up. Regardless of the heat level I select, nothing happens.

Contacted Breville via email. They asked for the purchase information, then they sent me a fedex label to ship it back. 10 days later I had a new one. Great customer service.

I purchased my Breville on March 26, 2009, so it's out of warranty. When I plug it in, the START button lights white but will not turn red (on) or turn off! What part do I need?

I bought a Breville BKE820XL variable temperature kettle in Oct. 2009, so it's past warranty. As of yesterday the temperature settings light up, as well as the start button, but when you push start, nothing happens (i.e., it won't heat up or it will turn off). Is there a reset button or a part I can order to fix this?

after over 30 minutes on telephone hold, I sent you e-mail at askus@brevilleusa.com and I got a generic reply that was not related on non functional kettle.

My variable kettle is less then a year old and it should be under manufacturer's warranty. Where can I send the kettle to be serviced/replace?

I have a kettle that I purchased about two years ago, so it is out of warranty. It started by not shutting off. Then it went to not turning on. Now none of the buttons won't light up. I really expected it to last longer than this. I only use it once a day. Is it possible to just buy a new base?

Thanks

Lalon,

It is possible to purchase a new base, but it may not resolve the issue you are having as it may also be in the kettle itself. When in stock, a replacement base can be purchased here: http://www.brevilleusa.com/base-and-c.... If you were interested in a small discount towards the purchase of a new kettle however, we can assist you with one if you did email us at askus@Brevilleusa.com making reference to this post.

I have had my kettle since October 2009. It is my second Breville kettle - the first one, the SK500XL model without the temperature setting, was problematic as well (lights died out after a couple months).
My second kettle, the BKE820XL, was a gift. Its been problematic from the start. Sometimes, when I try to heat water to the "green" temperature, it won't start - the "start" and the "hold" button flash intermittently instead. Other times, it will just randomly starting boiling water if plugged in. Usually, I'll allow it to cool down, replace the water, or just wait an hour and it will start working again.
However, it has stopped working altogether now - the "start" and "hold" buttons keep flashing. Given the cost, I'd expect the kettles to have lasted longer and be of better quality! What can I do to get it to work again?

Hi we are having the same problem with our BKE820XL kettle. The start and temperature light are on but when we press the start button it briefly turns red then flips back to white or just turns off. It is about 2 years old, so it is out of warranty. Is there anything we can do to resolve this problem?

My one having same problem. I used it only couple of months only, then it didn't work; I left it in the storeroom for quite long time. I tried two months ago.
surprisingly it worked again, but it worked about two weeks and back to same problem again. I would say that is something like programs problem. not reliable anyway.

I also have a "Breville Variable-Temperature Kettle" that is no longer working properly it has been shutting off before the water reaches temperature, sometimes immediately after pressing start, sometimes after several minutes. the problem seems to get slightly better if I unplug/ re plug the base unit from the electrical outlet. However, the problem seems to be getting worse with time. Also, the temperature hold feature and the audible tones for button presses and heating cycle completion no longer work at all.

I contacted customer support by phone, and because my unit is over 1yr old, they told me it was not covered under warranty and that they could not help me with my defective kettle. The fact that a $200 kettle is only backed for 1yr shows very poor support for a premium product. Its a shame that their products are poorly made and supported, because the design and function (when they are working) is very good and, in the case of my kettle, I have not found an alternative from a different mfg. I sent an email to AskUs@BrevilleUSA.com as a last-ditch effort to resolve this problem.

Hopefully this does get resolved because otherwise I will not purchase another product from them and I'll really miss my kettle.

UPDATE!
I contacted Breville via the above email that Kenji had supplied, but was informed that he is no longer with the company. However, Matt, the gentleman who assisted me, was very helpful. Right away I had an offer to return my kettle for a 1-time replacement and a printable fed-ex shipping label with which to send it.
Less than 2 weeks from posting here and my email to AskUs@BrevilleUSA.com, I have a new and fully functional kettle; I'm actually drinking coffee that I made with the water from it as I write this!

Thanks Matt and thanks getsatisfaction.com for bringing this frustrating issue to a speedy and satisfying conclusion!

Final update, despite the great support, the product is fatally flawed. The replacement developed the same problem after just a few months. I bought a
Bonvita and its been running strong for over a year with multiple uses every day.

My kettle stopped working, the lights on the base come on and turn red, but the kettle does not heat up. If I unplug it from the wall and plug it back in, it gives a long BEEP.

The kettle is over a year old, so its out of warranty, but I would really like it fixed because I like the kettle. Is there any trouble shooting I could try?

The long BEEP after re-plugging is normal.

Try contacting Breville - they helped me out with my kettle.

Hi, how can I determine if the problem is with the base or the kettle? When I turn on the switch, it does not light up at all.

All of the switches and major electronics are in the base. The Kettle just has the heating element and the thermocouple (which have no moving or fragile parts and are very unlikely to break), You can be 99.9% certain that the problem is in the base. -the same place that both my original and it's replacement failed.

Return it if you can. Both my original and the replacement broke in similar ways way as yours. It's a flawed / poorly designed product.
My guess, from what I've seen is that the base, and the delicate electronics inside are not properly insulated from the heat (they get almost as hot as the water) and eventually they just "cook' and stop working properly.

I bought a Bonavita:
http://www.amazon.com/Bonavita-Variab...

and its been working flawlessly for well over a year.

It's too bad about the Breville, but no amount of good support can fix a fatally flawed product.

every time this happens to mine, I turn base over (when unplugged) and smack the back several times. Plug back in, and it works great. I suspect little pieces of debris interfere with contact between base and kettle, so that's my theory as to why this technique works. Hope that helps.

I purchased mine at Bed Bath and Beyond. I came back with it in the box with the receipt. I got a new one, no questions asked. Highly recommended for all your kitchen purchases. Teflon pots don't last very long. Get a new one if you save the receipts.

I brought mine back to Bed Bath & B and no questions were asked even tho it said on manual to call factory for repair or whatever, I got a cuisinart one and got a $50 gift card back. I should buy that cuisinart from very beginning cos it works great and i never had any problems with it.
