Breville Ikon Blender Smoking

  • Problem

Last night, when blending soft ingredients for a sauce (cooked peppers, onions, olive oil), my Breville Ikon Blender started smoking from the base and gave off a horrible smell. We have experienced this problem before with the smell, but never smoking.

I had the same experience tonight while making a smoothie! Smoke and horrible smell from the blender. The smell actually permeated into my drink!

Reggie-

I was contacted by a Breville customer service rep, and after I gave them a scanned copy of my receipt/proof of purchase and model #, along with some other information, they sent me a pre-paid fed ex label to send it back for a replacement...hopefully the new one doesn't have the same problem - the smoke/smell was awful!

My breville ikon blender motor burned out this morning. I loved this blender for the 2.5 years I had it until it stopped working. I was blending a protein shake and acrid smoke started coming out of the base. Now the blender is not working at all. I've never had a problem with any of my prior blenders...It was a wedding gift we chose thinking the breville would last longer given the more costly pricetag. It there anyway the motor can be replaced?

Hello Erin,

It sounds like you may have had a worn out blade assembly which caused the motor to work harder than necessary. Over time this may have caused your motor to prematurely die as a result. Please email us at askus@brevilleusa.com and we can link you a list of our authorized service centers.

Kenji,

I used my blender last night to make frozen drinks, and the motor died. I have only used this blender a dozen times. I know the blender only has a one year warranty, and I've had it for two plus years. Is there any way to get a replacement? I'm really disappointed in the life of this blender. Please do the right thing and stand behind your product.

I had the same problem and was not offered replacement (or even a repair). I also had my blender for only 2+ years. I understand the limitations on the warranty, however for a known, common problem I would think the product should be improved and the problem remedied. It seems breville prefers to continue selling a product that commonly burns out after (and before) the warranty expires. They have lost a previously loyal breville customer.

I had my blender for only 5 months, the hardest things that I ever blend where some bananas and strawberries, one day start smelling like burning a little, then just die. I purchased this blender at macys, a place I always shop with confidence in their products, because of that I trow the box and the paperwork away, the only proof I have is the payment trough my credit card and the blender itself.... it seems like I'm loosing my money because macys hasn't being very helpful, that is very annoying.

Hello Norma, Erin, and Drew,

I would encourage you all to email us at askus@brevilleusa.com for further assistance. Even if we are unable to replace the machine or parts under warranty we can at the very least offer an authorized service center for repair, or offer a significant discount towards the purchase of a new unit if you are interested.

I have already emailed askus@brevilleusa.com. A reasonable solution was not offered.

Same issue as above. I noticed the blade assembly is not moving freely. Motor still seems to work so I hope it's not too late to replace. Will also email askus@brevilleusa.com for help.

I didn't save the receipt but it's fairly new. Kind of wish I'd spent the money on a Vitamix.

I had same problem. Blending ice and strawberries. Blender started smoking. It seemed to be the gasket that holds the rotating blade was burning. It was very hot and seemed to have melted into the drink too since the drink was blackish in color. Awful. It was rubber tasting. The blade was very hard to turn afterwords. It was as if the rubber melted on to the blade's rotating axle.

Hello Rick,

Can I ask how long you've owned the machine, what you normally blend while using the machine, if the blade assembly is removed after each blending session, and how frequently it's used? Also, if you could check your blade assembly and turn it by hand do you feel any resistance?

I have had the same problems listed above. Smoky smell for about a month then the machine just died....I will send an email to askus@ for the list of service providers. Any body get an estimate of the repair costs? Seems a little rediculous for this to happen to an expensive blender...

Ditto with my blender. It started smoking this past weekend - the metal gasket on the blade assembly was hot and had melted some of the base. I tried again today and same thing; the smell permeated the drink as well -a waste of a bunch of fresh fruit and juice! I have has the blender for about 2 years so no longer under warranty. I will email to the address given but based on the comments here, I'm not expecting a good resolution!

Yvonne,

When the blade assembly is no longer turning well, we would recommend replacing the blade assembly to prevent damage to the motor. When their is resistance in the blade assemblies movements, this is multipled when used by the motor and will cause additional strain to the motor which could ultimately cause it to overheat/smoke.

If you email us we will determine if you are under warranty, and at that point may replace the unit or recommend a service center that may be able to diagnose/service the machine.

I am having the same problem and Breville offered no help, I was told to call a repair center and pay for repairs myself.

My blender is also only 2 years old and for this price you would think you could get more than 2 years use! I didn't even use it that often.

Very disappointed by Breville, I had the impression these were quality products but will think twice before purchasing another.

I found that the smoke is the rubber melting. The rubber gets into the drink (turned the drink dark) and is awful. I threw my Breville away since there was no support and bought an inexpensive blender at CVS for about $30. It works great. I thought "why should I repair it?" when it will likely repeat the same problem. The repair would have cost at least the cost of a new inexpensive blender. Mine was out of warranty and had not been used much.

Wow, I am having exactly the same problem! So glad I googled it! That burnt rubber in our food can't be healthy. Having an almost entirely Breville kitchen, I've been generally satisfied with products, but this blender has been a headache after just a handful of uses. I'm surprised Breville hasn't offered a better solution to us!

What a shame. Such a nice design. But I've had the same problem. Had the blender for about two years. Noticed the burning smell from the day I purchased it ( also at Macy's ). Figured it was just the motor breaking in but it is definitely the blade assembly. I know this because I took it apart after I had the thing melt into my smoothie! Something just not right with it. Going to get a kitchen aid because getting parts doesn't look promising after what I've read here. Oh well.

Breville only offers a 30% off towards the purchase of a new blender. A good sale in the retail marketplace is a better offer. Personally I found Breville reps to be rude, uncaring and like dealing with the IRS. I will not purchase another Breville product. I will caution all others to buy another brand. for the price it is a piece of junk.
