For the BFS600XL steamer, can the tray bases be removed to create a single large 3-level space to cook long items like king crab legs?

Sure can. I've removed the individual bases many times. You can anywhere from one large open chamber to three individual levels to accommodate different size foods.

This is a great steamer!

Thanks for the reply. Two other questions:

1) What is the capacity of the steamer?
2) Is it made from BPA free plastic?

That is brilliant -- so presumably steaming a head of broccoli or other larger veggies would be no problem as well?
