I’m irritated

"Free Beta" my butt. Bait & Switch marketing is NOT a good way to retain customers. It makes us not trust you!

I'm not sure what the thought process was behind these surveys but ya'll have permanently lost me as a customer as a result. Offering a FREE product then threatening to delete it if we don't do the survey, so we do the survey & get the option to Pay or Delete!? What the hell?

Well, if those are my options, by all means, delete it. I flat out refuse to deal with companies that engage in bait & switch marketing tactics. Nowhere did it say anything about a time limitation when I signed up. I am now aware that it's in the FAQ but I did not see it anywhere when ya'll were demanding my credit card info. I would not have signed up for the beta, instead I might have just bought a damn "chunk" seeing as we are looking for a host to add to our portfolio anyway. Because ya'll seem to feel deceptive business practices is the way to go however, that now will never happen. With 1 email and a simple survey you destroyed any trust you had built up with my company.

Not to mention the fact that ChunkHost has just about the ugliest website I've ever seen, does not offer cPanel or any other control panel for that matter & generally lacks every single feature I look for in a PROFESSIONAL host. Two thumbs WAY down...ya'll are a joke!

Sorry to hear your experience was so negative. Mine was the complete opposite - i knew it was a limited time free beta - i also saw that the price was better than all other providers. I was actually looking for software without complexity - I just want dns and chunks - nothing else.

The fact that i received a lifetime discount for using the beta program means that I'm going to stick with Chunkhost for a long time.

It seems - if i understand you post - what you needed was clarity about the terms of the arrangement to be presented when you started the agreement - and this would have prepared you.

I know that it would be better if we could both have a positive experience.

  • A fancy website and lots of control panels doesn't necessarily make a good host. I've had a great experience with chunkhost so far and am more than happy to have a command prompt and no unnecessary fluff.

Seems to me that by forgoing the fluff, you are getting more of what really matters.

    Kiddo.

I guess reading through everything before typing in your credit card information is just a ludicrous concept, huh?

I mean, jeez.. why would anyone do that?

Okay, sarcasm mode -off-, I don't understand at all how you could have missed that a 'free beta' isn't a lifetime free account. Beta is a -phase- of testing. It's not a 'status'. Once they've given you a test-drive of their services they expect you to fill out a survey about it, and fill out bug reports while you're using the services.

Clearly the problem here is that you, Mr.Mike Solstice, do not understand what "Beta" means. Why on earth would they just GIVE you about a month's worth of free VPS service without you giving them anything in return? The entire point of the 512 beta is to make sure that the 512 accounts work properly, setup happens smoothly, and at the end of your beta period, you fill out a survey on their service as a VPS host. This is how they decide if A) The 512 account type is being properly set up. B) There is a big enough interest (demand) for the 512 for them to support (supply) it. and C) Are they fulfilling your needs in terms of support, product quality, and features.

So, instead of complaining that they asked you to, oh, I don't know.. BETA TEST the BETA PROGRAM you signed up for you could do something constructive like actually filling out the survey properly and suggesting new features if you feel something was lacking or didn't meet your expectations/fulfil your needs.

Damnit, I can't stand people with some screwed up sense of entitlement. ChunkHost is awesome and doesn't owe you jack, pal. They gave you free service in exchange for you volunteering to beta test said service, and you spit in their face? I hope karma treats you *real* nice for that one.

Actually, if you're quite done making assumptions & making a total a** out of yourself, I'm a programmer & fully understand what both Alpha and Beta phases are, and are not. I fully expected to loose or have to pay for the account when it came OUT of BETA. According to their site, it is still in BETA so a "Free BETA account" should thereby, still be active. This was not a "BETA Test" it was a "Free Trial". There is a HUGE difference & that's ultimately what pissed me off. Had I known it was a "Free Trial" and not a "BETA Test" then I would have fully expected - and likely would have - paid for the account after the trial was up. Instead, I get a rather forcefully written email demanding that I take a "survey" of the service which said clearly that it would STILL be free if I did - so I did the survey, filled it out & was as honest as possible - and POOF instantly payment was demanded or get deleted. That is what I mean by "bait and switch" marketing.

It was indeed a great service & one I had fully intended to pay for once it was OUT OF BETA. The fact that the terms were grossly misrepresented made me rethink my choice of whom to setup hosting through. So yeah, to use your rather crude terminology, I'm spitting in their face. I feel I was outright lied to in an effort to get me to setup a project "for free" and then put over a barrel in an attempt to force me to be their customer or loose my work. That will never work for people like me. I've been in the hosting industry for over 15 years now, any company that relies on those types of tactics to gain clientele pretty clearly is not confident in their product. If they're not confident in their product, why would I be? The fact that they "have no plans" to add cPanel is an absolute joke & cuts their market share rather severely.

In short, ChunkHost represents itself as an extremely amateur company & my corporation will only deal with professional webhosts. And don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they need some fancy site or need to be open 100 years to gain my business; I threw my stock in with HostGator when they first opened their doors & had all of like 3 staff, due to their professional presence & clear confidence in their product. I am still there to this day. They have gone from being a very small operation to staffing thousands of people & being worth millions - by being upfront, honest & professional.

    • You're not kidding... He was in my mob on mobsters....

His l33t ski11z let him write bots to automate MySpace and Facebook games. In violation of the TOS for both the games and the websites. www dot warlists dot com. Chunk is probably better off NOT hosting anything for them.

And dude, whining about not having cPanel is like whining about not having training wheels. Seriously?????
    • Still jealous that I built a successful site & yours flopped, huh Dark? I see you still don't have a life...sad. But not my problem. I've said it to you about 100 times over the past 3 years you've held this grudge, get a life & grow up.

I am glad cpanel is getting left out - that means the devs cab focus on making simple tools and supporting there infrastructure - I think chunkhost is for people that use other tools for ops work - like chef or devstructure

  • Wow dude you need to chill out. You're really complaining about needing to do a survey at the end of a FREE trial? That sounds completely reasonable to me. Plus the permanent discount I have on my account now? It's totally worth it.

Dear Mr Person Who Doesn't Like to Read,

The FAQ clearly states the limitations on the BETA. The fact that you didn't see it until after only shows you didn't even bother reading the legal stuff, that is YOUR fault, not Chunkhost's. You should ALWAYS read ALL the fine print before signing up for anything, this is not a new concept but one you should learn before you find yourself truly stuck in a contact you'll lose your asprin over.

Also, bait and switch is illegal and accusing a company of it is rather serious, so if I was you I'd talk to the guys/gals at Chunkhost and fix your misunderstanding so they don't sue you for slander.

    Signed,
    RTFM

    • And dig up threads that are more than a year old that the OP has completely lost interest in. Must be great to have no life...
    • Pro tip: don't use the "no life" argument on 2 different people in the same thread. it makes you look immature. And for your information, I was reminded of this thread the same way you were: I got an email when someone left a reply.

Also, this thread serves 2 useful functions, even though it's a year old. First, it gives people a nice laugh to read through your rage posts. But second, and more importantly, this thread is where I found out that taking the survey they send you ends your free chunk. Since I knew that, I was able to get an extra week free by putting off the survey until the last minute.

If you've really "lost interest" in this thread, you can always just unsubscribe. There's a link to do that at the bottom of your original post, and then all these people who read and understood the FAQ will stop leaving mean replies informing you of what an idiot you are.

  • Solstice, you're a dummy face. I'm sorry that you're a "programmer" and still don't understand that betas are temporary. I'm also sorry that you neglected to read the information stating that the chunk is deleted after the temporary period if you decided to not pay for services there after. Life is rough, sorry man.

  • I just started my chunk today, and so far everything is running smoothly. I understand that I'll lose the chunk if I don't upgrade, but I am actually just using the chunk for my own development purposes as well as testing the company functionality.

Yes their website is quite ugly I'll admit, but it's easy to use, and that's what matters to me, it only took me 5 minutes to switch from Ubuntu to CentOS when I needed to, and only a few seconds to set up my DNS records.

Control Panels... well, this is a topic I should probably stay away from. If you want a Cpanel or Plesk or DirectAdmin panel on a VPS, expect to pay for it. You can also expect to pay for things like Fantastico or Softaculous. Especially if you have a dedicated IP. However if someone IS in the market for a control panel to do the dirty work, Kloxo works just fine (I know I have it running) and so does Webmin on CentOS. Webmin can be installed with yum right out of the box and Kloxo can be installed with very little effort (use wget to grab the install script and run it from shell, not that hard eh?

If your goal is to run an internet business, you're better off starting as someone's reseller, once you get the feel for things, then you can switch to VPS or Dedicated. There is too much you need to do under the hood (especially with licensing fees for: control panel (like cpanel), script installer (such as Fantastico), billing software (like whmcs) and optional stuff you'd like to give to your clients (like RVSite or Xtra).

I'm not putting the OP down or trying to insinuate anything, I am trying to help folks. You have to do a little homework before you dive into this kind of stuff, the OP is supposed to be a programmer that's fine, but for most people, a VPS is NOT the way to go. You also can't be lured in by the "free" or "beta" tags, because both of them mean "it won't be there forever"

I've used other VPS's in the past, but generally stuck to regular reselling myself, I have decided I want to start working with them again. I have my own Linux laptop to work with, but this is a "live" enviornment and it's nice to be able to test on the internet so I can figure out what I need to do myself.

  • I’m pleased
I knew when I signed up that this would be temporary. I only signed up earlier today, and I'm quite happy. Setup was quick and painless, and the server seems to be quite snappy. I'm also quite pleased with the lack of CPanel. As someone who likes doing things myself, I have a great disdain for CPanel, which I feel frequently treats me like an idiot. Shutdown, Reboot, and Reimage are about all I need. By leaving out any extra buttons, they simplify the user experience, allowing me the maximum time possible to actually USE THE SERVICE. I've got a bunch of small testing things I can do here before my trial expires, and then Ill happily fill out their survey and go about my business. Were I currently in the market for a Xen VPS (I only have the budget for cheap OpenVZ plans at the moment), this free beta would make me SERIOUSLY consider ChunkHost as an option. Ive forwarded links around to all my friends, and some of them may actually stick around. So basically, I feel the exact opposite as Solstice, and I think this left a GREAT impression.
