I’m annoyed with the product - it never did this before

Why is Silverback creating 20gb files?

Huge, 20gb file sizes created from less than 1/2 hour of recording picture in picture at 1024x768 resolution. Using 2.0 (427) MacOS 10.6.3 Why?

  • 20GB does sound a little on the high side for a half hour video. However it does depend on the amount of activity happening on the screen. Remember that at 1024x768 you're recording HD quality video with no compression. A heavily compressed, half hour TV show at 1080p would typically come in at 2GB, so while large, 20GB is in the same ballpark.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

I'm recording the ichat video preview window -- which is showing someone using an iphone -- for about 20minutes and then 20minutes of web usage (with ichat video preview hidden), For example, see what's showing on the macbook screen here: http://www.flickr.com/photos/lwaldal/...

Do you think the file size would reduce if I close the ichat video preview window when I'm just recording web site usage?

Now that I've given silverbackapp 800gb, it's fine. It was disappointing and surprising yesterday when silverbackapp sucked through 100gb in no time.

Any other suggestions for how to do the recording I'm doing with more efficient disk space usage? Lower monitor resolution? Or use a different app to stream/preview the external webcam?

It'd be nice to have more help with understanding how much disk space silverbackapp wants to various types of screen recordings.
    • Wow, that's one pretty interesting set-up you've got going there. I am impressed. However it does also go some way to explain why the source files are unusually high.

Basically Silverback only captures areas on the screen that change. So for most websites or web apps that the cursor moving, small areas of the screen updating and every now and again a full page refresh. However if you're piping video in then the whole of the screen is changing all the time. So the best way to reduce file size would be to a) reduce the screen resolution and b) reduce the size of the webcam that you're capturing.
