Adding formatting to email messages

I want to be able to add formatting to email messages I send from the Communicate Tab. Right now it just appears as a lump of text, I cannot add bold or italics like I can here, as well as other basic formatting elements. Is there a way to do that?

Hi Chris, basic email functionality (functional Email) is included within the package.  We do offer marketing emails which are purchased at £10 for 12,000 via the campaign emails.  These offer a lot more flexibility for formatting text

Hi Sarah,
What is that formatting and where do I find it, this is just for the occasional update email that is not a campaign.This is what I see today, how can I add formatting?

There is no formatting in basic system emails - this is designed for quick and simple messages to go out to members

As above if you want more functionality you would require campaign emails

Hi Sarah,

I think offering the ability to create and send an email should at least offer some very basic formatting, it doesn't even maintain paragraphs and mashes up carriage returns and line feeds. We are not carrying out campaigns and simply emailing club members with minor updates. 

They are hard to decipher and look exceptionally poor when sent out.
