Help Google to find your website!

Google and all other search engines index the web by "spidering" - which basically means they go to a web page, index it, then one by one go to all links on that page, when they get to that page they index it, and then go to all the links on that page, etc etc.

Naturally if you have a brand new site, then Google doesn't even know it exists and are not going to index it until they stumble across it by following a link from another site. If you have no external links pointing to your site, then that makes it even harder for the search engines to discover you and it could be quite a long time before you get indexed.

So what can clubs do:

First of all, submit your site to the search engines:
http://www.google.co.uk/addurl/
http://siteexplorer.search.yahoo.com/...
http://www.bing.com/webmaster/submits...

Ensure there are some incoming links pointing to your site. Easiest thing to do is add the site to various directories like DMOZ (http://www.dmoz.org/). There are plenty of other free directories too, and some Sport/league specific ones - remember, the more links pointing in to the site, the quicker it will be found.

Neither of the steps above will produce instantaneous results, but should speed up the discovery. When search engines do start to index a site, they will start off slowly, probably only indexing one or two pages, and then come back in a few weeks time and index some more. Over time though, they'll be indexing the site every single day.

OK, we are going to add the tracking code as part of the work we are doing currently on Gold, although it will be available to all bronze and silver users too :)
In terms of Facebook and Twitter, this is a longer job for us so is on our list of enhancements post Gold launch

As promised, the option to add the tracking is there tonight, thanks! However...unfortunately I'm getting the "we're sorry...." message.

My ID appears to be in the form of UA-XXXXXXXX-X rather than UA-XXXXXX-X, am I missing something?

Great. It's let me input the ID, so I'll check back in a day or so to make sure it's receiving the data.

Thanks very much for such swift replies!
