ACTIVATE MY CABLE BOX!

How do I activate a digital cable box? I have call the activation number and followed their instructions and all I get is the guide listing for each channel and "one moment please, this channel should be available shortly." There is a statement on the "equipment activation" sheet that says to follow the instructions in the self install kit to access the ON Demand Digital Cable Free Demo- once the demo plays, you will have confirmation that your service is fully functional. Well, there are no instructions for that. So, if I can find out how to run that demo- will it then activate the box? Why doesn't the activation line tell you to do that? Why does customer service not know what that even means? Hopefully I'll get an answer soon- or I'll call Direct TV tommorrow and get what I expect- the ability to watch television.
