Hi
We have had a load of users with problems following FF upgrade to 35.0.
I note that our extension version number (as reported on the FF addons page) jumped from 0.95.28 to 0.95.30. Or at least it did for me, and the extension still works for me (now that it's 0.95.30)
However, some people, especially USA can't seem to get the extension to upgrade to 0.95.30
Is that version change caused by crossrider having to modify something to cope with the FF upgrade? Or is the change in version caused just by the FF upgrade?
Struggling with this because I don't understand the underlying process well enough.
Nevertheless, it's causing some real headaches for us so any insight appreciated.

1Hello Troy,
In general, Crossrider extensions for Firefox updates the framework using the Firefox built-in update cycle. Hence, when the browser makes the request to update an extension, the latest version is downloaded and installed.
I tested some extensions whilst upgrading from FF34 to FF35 and they operated correctly post upgrade. As with any update, it's dependent on connectivity to our servers, so if it was disrupted for whatever reason, the update would occur the next time the browser makes the request.
As for the version changing, each browser upgrade introduces new scenarios that may require tweaking of the existing framework. Hence, well before the release of new versions, we update and test our framework to accommodate the new changes. This means that the framework and its version changes and, as mentioned, is pulled by the browser as part of it's extension updating mechanism. -

@Shlomo,
Our extension is no longer working with Firefox 35.0, on Mac OS X.
There was no code change in the extension.
Error in the browser console: Could not read chrome manifest 'file:///Applications/Firefox.app/Contents/Resources/browser/extensions/%7B972ce4c6-7e08-4474-a285-3208198ce6fd%7D/chrome.manifest'.

Hello Gupta,
Please send details explaining these tests identify the problem, along with a reference to this thread, to support@crossrider.com. Then I will be better able to channel this to the dev team. Thanks -

Hi Shlomo
Is it possible this would help us - we're still having the problem that lots of people are not picking up the latest updates.

Troy-
It's possible :) I rebuilt your XPI as well

Hello again, I am getting the same installation problem with Firefox. The Extension ID is 70546. I had never problems with Firefox so far but I only test from time to time on FF and IE. Currently I have no problems getting the extension to install on IE. On Chrome everything is alright.

Ok. I discovered, when I started FF35 the console says "InvalidStateError" - I also discovered that I could not change the privacy settings to user-defined again ('Clicking OK did not change the settings). So actually my FF35 was stuck in private mode. So it is a FF configuration problem. Thanks for your help though.

You're welcome, I'm pleased you managed to resolve the issue :)

I have this problem for extension id 19737, Firefox Dev build 37 seems to not load the addon at all as there are no console messages, the addon works fine on FF 35.0

I'm glad you're planning ahead ... but FF37 is too far ahead :) Our Dev/QA team is currently working on ratifying the platform for FF36. After that they'll move on to FF37 and have it ready in time for it's release.

@Deepesh, this thread is for Firefox 35. Could you please move your issue to a separate thread for 37?

Hello Troy et al,
Thanks for the additional information. I am working with the dev team to try and reproduce and investigate the issue. Any additional information you can provide would help speed up the investigation.
So far I have the following extensions for testing. Please provide steps for reproducing the problem: 44324 (Sujoy Gupta), 37658 (Troy Wray), 70546 (Thorsten) -

Hi Shlomo
We send people to this link http://www.viralmailprofits.com/ultis... to get the appropriate plugin.
The one at issue is the FF one. When people in the US (that is our best guess because all my closer European colleagues have no problem) install, the first version shows on the addons page as 0.91.5
When they check for updates, there are none.
When I install and check for updates I get 0.95.30 and that extension works fine.-
In your specific case, a quick fix may be to upload the latest XPI to the site until the issue is resolved.

ok, we can try that but I thought the xpi file remained the same and it was just the components it referenced that updated?
-
-
That made no difference to me. First install installed 0.91.5 and now when I do 'find updates' I get 0.95.31 - so it has gone up another minor revision since this thread started.
But it updates when I instruct it too and no doubt would have update automatically had I left it and restarted FF one or more times.
But our US colleagues just can't get the extension to update.
Identical behaviour and version numbers in standard FF and developer edition FF -

Shlomo
Did you try installing our extension in FF? There's no need to do anything with it or know how it works, just see if when you install you get version 0.91.5 and then you force update and you should get 0.95.31 or at least 0.95.30 (version number as seen on the addons page)- view 7 more comments

I do appreciate that. The original post was to see if anyone else was having the same problem. I can't reproduce it and I'm not sure, other than you doing a VM on one of the affected people (not a real suggestion), how we're going to be able to reproduce the problem.
You didn't answer whether a malware blcker could prevent an update - seems unlikely but need to ask -
-
Apologies, I didn't see a question about malware blocker, but I guess it's possible that a firewall, AV or malware product is causing the problem.

Great news: one of the people concerned disabled their firewall and it worked.
Why they never previously had to disable their firewall, only after the update to FF35 I have no idea.
Thanks for your help Shlomo-
Indeed great news. Thanks for the update.
