Agree, Richard. Some people are made for radio and some for TV. Few can do both well I don't think. I love Bill Press on radio, on TV not so much. Forgive me Bill as he is an incredible gentleman but on TV the charisma is not there.

Just watching Stephanie Miller who is a BRILLIANT comedian radio talk host. she does that INCREDIBLY well with Chris Lavoie and Jim Ward. I watched them on Current this a.m. and it's just different on TV. Radio you do not see expressions and sometimes that is good as you concentrate on the satire of it.

Still Olbermann cannot be replaced. I guess enough of my ranting and I'm the one getting boring.

Keith Olbermann was the best thing Current had going. It brought me over from MSNBC. I don't care if he was a prima donna. He spoke for me and a lot of other ordinary people sick the lies the right is telling. Keith had the guts to confront anyone and expose them on TV. He told it like it is. And his delivery is priceless. So let him be a little spoiled.

I can't watch Current now. Young Turks is stupid starting with the title. And Jennifer Granholm is plain boring. Elliot Spitzer does not have a personality for TV. So now I am back to MSNBC. But I'm frustrated because I thought Current would let Keith Olbermann do his thing. He's the only thing that put Current on the map. Now Current has nothing left to offer me. And I'm angry.

Peter, Agree with you totally!! Keith will be on David Letterman tonight. Just tell me where he is going and I will follow. I never left MSNBC totally as Rachel is a price above rubies and Current's technology just plain stinks. In this day and age for Current to think they can compete with the visuals of MSNBC or dare I say Fox for its technological excellence is delusional.

Keith brought me to Current not vice versa and you are right about the other commentators. Spitzer is watchable and I still may from time to time but a replacement for Keith? Ain't gonna happen.

I'm reposting Keith Olbermann's public statement below, that he released after being let go from his contract with Current TV, for those who may not have read it.
    __________________________________________________________________

Keith Olbermann’s full statement from March 30th, 2012:

I’d like to apologize to my viewers and my staff for the failure of Current TV.

Editorially, Countdown had never been better. But for more than a year I have been imploring Al Gore and Joel Hyatt to resolve our issues internally, while I’ve been not publicizing my complaints, and keeping the show alive for the sake of its loyal viewers and even more loyal staff. Nevertheless, Mr. Gore and Mr. Hyatt, instead of abiding by their promises and obligations and investing in a quality news program, finally thought it was more economical to try to get out of my contract.

It goes almost without saying that the claims against me implied in Current’s statement are untrue and will be proved so in the legal actions I will be filing against them presently. To understand Mr. Hyatt’s “values of respect, openness, collegiality and loyalty,” I encourage you to read of a previous occasion Mr. Hyatt found himself in court for having unjustly fired an employee. That employee’s name was Clarence B. Cain. http://nyti.ms/HueZsa

In due course, the truth of the ethics of Mr. Gore and Mr. Hyatt will come out. For now, it is important only to again acknowledge that joining them was a sincere and well-intentioned gesture on my part, but in retrospect a foolish one. That lack of judgment is mine and mine alone, and I apologize again for it.

this is 2012..... this just can't be happening. what is going on here - that current could possibly be SO shortsighted? Keith HAS to be here/present. i find it unbelievable/mind boggling that egos have come to rule over the greater good. i thought that CTV was bigger and brighter and more encompassing than this.

    its a sad sad day....

Keith was the voice of reason. "current" TV now demonstrates the heartsickening voice of nothing. Thanks for supporting Keith for awhile. I am alarmed that the bland Eliot Spitzer program replaced a bold genius. What a gross disappointment. I watched one episode. I'm finished with the whole network.

He WAS on Letterman and although I could not pay full attention because of getting sick from Romney's primary speech. It LITERALLY gave me a migraine because they are simply SO mean, so sickening to the president and a Trojan Horse to us just like the president said yesterday which takes me to Keith.

HE is SO important to our cause. ALL progressives are and the ones who can articulate in the media something I personally could NEVER do as I do not have that kind of ability to withstand withering criticism. The primaries which I watched as Rachel discussed it makes me realize that those who were cheering Romney that piece of flip flopping trash COULD have been paid but viewers who are not savvy will think that the American public supports him. It made me upset and sick literally. Olbermann is SO important to our cause and the three egos should have thought of us ... WE their people who love them and who are NOT social Darwinists, nationalistic fascists .

The Republican hierarchy will DUPE or try to dupe the American public. As to Keith on Letterman I do not know what he expected. At his age and with all his problematic employment episodes he should have taken the money and run with it and done it not only for his own financial aspect but for once for us the 99% who need him. No one did as well by us as he. Just my thought coming out of a migraine fog -- sad and angry at the awful milieu in this country!

  • Do you know how few spots there are for people to fill in jobs like Olbermann has had? Ask Lou Dobbs, Glenn Beck how they have weathered prima dona personalities...I still think that Keith should have taken the bucks, put up with what he had to because finding a job now that is as front and center as TV commentators will be difficult to day the least. Why cannot someone think of us for a change instead of petty egotistical junk!

I've been fighting the progressive fight for decades -- I''m running out of gas. If they reject t he president ... I give up and America will deserve the snake pit it gets. Republicans are RUINOUS and this comes from decades of experience!

For those of us who cheered when he delivered his "special comments" on healthcare, bank corruption, gay rights and others, and felt a moment of pride somehow, that someone stood up to the main stream and said something that stood for the common working person. We thought he had finally found a home on Current. We are very disappointed!! Were his ratings off...how inconvenient.

As it turns out, unlike Current TV, we championed a man who wasn't just about commercial success, and stood for something good and decent about people, and his demand that they stand up for themselves against power and say "ENUF". Damn it, he started OWS almost single handed!! We will miss you brother, and we love you.

I sorely am hoping maybe beyond hope that the three of them VP Gore, Hyatt and Olbermann will PLEASE for the good of the nation and the progressive movement's humanity and ethics TRY to get together. Nations at war reach accords. Life is too short you three if anyone reads these blogs, please TRY to reach some agreement. Keith, you could compromise and pay for your trips back and forth to work..big deal. To be honest I would do anything to keep in front of an audience that needs you badly. Husbands and wives make up and stay together for the sake of the children..consider us your children. Just do it and avoid all the trauma of court litigation.

Just endure, Keith the not so great Current format and hope that it will improve over time. Yes, HDTV is a must .. gosh with all the money between the three of you you could pay for a good set. Where there is life there is hope my mother used to say after I was diagnosed with polio before the vaccine. And there was. I did well and SO can you.

If your throat has issues my goodness won't they compromise on that? Do it for us, for your country. We need you!

NOW, All I have left is MSNBC

I sware, it's really hard to be an enthuastic part of a political party,
that can't seam to get it's act together !!!

If you didn't have the money to honor Olbermann's contract, you shouldn't have hired him in the first place! Get prepared for the GREAT SLIDE, you'll be sailing downhill very quickly from here.

As I stated in another post, Current, you have a problem:

    1. The amateur technical issues exhibited every day are indicative of amateur staff and an indifferent management who cares little about content and execution.
HIRE REAL STAFF and give a shit.
Tried to watch Spitzer ONE MORE TIME last night but when I couldn't tune out the improperly tuned pre-recorded show and realized it was technical on YOUR END, I gave up entirely
SHOW some respect for your audience and at least TRY to APPEAR professional

    2. I am unimpressed with attempts by Mr Gore ( as VP, he supported and even promoted extraordinary rendition as a policy for the US - Liberal? Not even progressive) to create a "liberal" voice when he shows little respect for his employees. (or viewers)
Sure Mr Olbermann is a bit of a prima donna but that is why you hired him. He performs and he is the only voice for the Left in the Medium.
    Cenk appears to have lost his balls - with only infrequent insightful dialogue but little more than proselytizing for the remaining time.;
Bill Press is just doing his radio show in video as is Stephanie Miller - OK for radio but not TV. It does not translate. At least Bill Press DESERVES a show of his own with the ability to control every aspect.
Spitzer has some good points but as an "On Air" personality, he fails..
Grnholmmay have been a great governor but, again, she is terribly contrived and boring as a TV personality
ALL just proves that Current is not ready for prime time.

So, as a viewer, I have no reason to view.

I want Keith SO much to be on again as our king of commentary that there is nothing for which I would not advocate to do that.

I am going to say that which I know will not happen. I want them to both DITCH the lawsuits which are going to make HUGE bucks for the attorneys they hire. Were that we ALL were able to hire phenomenal representation which does NOT always equate with a fair verdict. So, I want all the parties to DISMISS their egotistical suits, sit down in a room, consider YOUR country who needs you desperately and bury your hatchets, compromise a thing liberals are supposed to be good at, and KO get your posterior ON THE AIR and Mr. Vice President and Mr. Hyatt work to do this if not for your own good for OUR good who needs more excellent progressive formatting to compete with the rancid 1% Fox and others!!! Think of all the bucks you could save which could collectively contribute the the betterment of Current!

  • Current TV countersues Olbermann
    Edit Subject By ANTHONY McCARTNEY

    More from BusinessWeek

Current TV offered its rebuttal to a scathing lawsuit filed by Keith Olbermann by filing a countersuit Friday detailing alleged bad behavior by its former talk show host and seeking a judge's ruling that he is not entitled to any more money from the network.

The network's filing accuses Olbermann of breaching his contract by disclosing terms of the lucrative deal, refusing to cooperate in promoting the show and taking days off without permission.

The countersuit comes one day after Olbermann sued his former employer, claiming it violated his agreement, engaged in shoddy production values and owed him more than $50 million.

"Current seeks a determination that it is no longer obligated to pay a dime to Mr. Olbermann who, having already been paid handsomely for showing up sporadically and utterly failing to keep his end of the bargain, now seeks to be paid tens of millions more for not working at all," the filing states.

The network and Olbermann have been at odds for months, and the dispute has escalated in the days since the former "Countdown" host was fired last week.

Current's suit claims Olbermann has damaged the network and will continue to do so. It seeks unspecified damages.

The networks' filing paints Olbermann as a petulant figure after he was hired to be Current's signature host, rejecting seven limousine companies, refusing to cooperate in promotional discussions and taking vacations with little notice. The complaint claims Olbermann wrote to Current co-founder Joel Hyatt to complain about a problem with a guest, "Give me a name so I know which of them to kill with my bare hands," and threw a glass mug on the set, which prompted a complaint from the set's landlord.

After two days of court filings, it was clear neither side was pulling punches in its description of the other.

Olbermann's lawsuit repeatedly attacked the network and described Hyatt and co-founder Al Gore as "dilettantes portraying entertainment industry executives."

"Olbermann deeply regrets his decision to put his trust in Hyatt and Gore," the lawsuit claims. "Current had neither the desire nor the ability to produce a first rate news commentary show. Olbermann did not join Current to ruin his hard-won reputation and appear on a show that was an embarrassment."

His lawsuit described a litany of technical issues, including shoddy equipment that wouldn't work if it rained, "terrible sound and filming" of the show, segments that abruptly dropped off the air, busted teleprompters and an earpiece that repeatedly malfunctioned.

Current's filing Friday claims Olbermann refused to cooperate in discussions about improving the set, and in general refused to promote the network.

  • I have agreed since day one when Current broadcast that it was SORELY lacking in technical professionalism and that if they wanted to compete with MSNBC and even Fox they surely would never do it as is. I STILL feel that way and I do not blame Keith for resenting and knowing he had made a terrible error by sinking into a level in which he should not be.

Most I have spoken with cannot even find Current on the dial and most who have HDTV would NEVER watch commentary with such a poor broadcast. I have written Current in the past, written Keith and written the Young Turks about my qualms but thought at some point they would be rectified. They were not. Finally, I simply gave up and tuned in solely for Keith.

Having said that I do not doubt that Keith had problems with temperament. I personally loathe that in a person. What happens to people like that is that they get fired or serial leave jobs and finally no one will hire them. The cliche out of sight out of mind rings true eventually and none of us can think we are somehow exempt from that. A wise aunt of mine once said life is like a rock thrown into a river. It sinks, the water covers it up and it is gone. This is why for the nation I wanted BOTH parties to bury their differences and truly make a difference. Some of Keith's special comments were BRILLIANT, moving and necessary to hear. I want to hear them again.

I hope for the impossible and that is for the parties to sink their differences have the river cover them up and emerge whole again so our nation can live out its promise. Keith and all progressive commentary helps do just that.

  • The "Inconvenient Truth" about this for us, is that Keith was far from "working class", and although we champion his strength to "stand up" to authority and say "ENUF", as he encouraged us to, Current may truly be trying to go a different direction with their programming, and how a network ought to be run. So he was a spoiled snot nose celebrity of sorts, but is that the point?

Conversely, shouldn't there be recognition of their agreement to Keith to do one thing or another, because as obscene as the compensation numbers actually are, wasn't this a part of Keith's employment contract? Did they do those things promised, and if not shame on them.

Finally, I look at Keith's dialog with Letterman, and I don't have a lot of respect for it. Letterman is cut from a cloth I would never imagine Keith to be, and yet they talked as if they were the only elite in the room. Over our heads, as it were. Maybe the viewing public, should fire all of them?

Are you guys that immature that you can't realize it's not Spitzer vs Olbermann. Both are intelligent and hard hitting newsmen who are thorns in the side of the right wing. Why criticize Spitzer for filling Olbermann's spot? Kind of childish. Of course, I would love to have Keith back, but let's call a spade a spade. Spitzer is articulate and brainy. Don't throw darts at him because he has his own show. He is one of US!!!!

Basically I agree. I rather enjoyed him on CNN and did not know why he was forced out. I do not agree with his opinion of Citizen's United. That's a biggy but other than that he is a strong force for our side.

It is too bad he got into the situation he did as governor of NY can be a stepping stone to the presidency. Another candle for our side rendered extinguished. We need EVERYONE we can get. The president MUST be reelected in the fall. There is NO question about it.

  • Vince,
It's not about choosing one over the other , ie. Spitzer or Keith, it's about how they ALL closed ranks and didn't say anything. I think Cenk and Jennifer are just as bad for having said nothing about it. Like we (the viewers) are just supposed to stay in line, eat our ration of s*#t everyday and say thank you.

Labor shuffles along and says nothing, even when it is talking heads on TV. They work for "the company" and I think this is exactly what we are all sick of. We're tired of taking less, working harder, and then being told this is the American Dream, and we are so lucky and fortunate to be able to struggle our entire lives to have our pensions stolen, our savings plundered thru investment fraud and our pay so diminished we can't make ends meet.

  • Paul: I don't advocate choosing one over another. Both are good guys. But do we let our dissatisfaction with Keith's dismissal blind us towards our goal of beating the GOP this fall? What are we going to accomplish by banning Current TV from our watch list? The demise of another of the few news outlets that is alerting America of the dangers we are facing? I am sure our brother Keith will find another venue real soon and we will benefit from his insight and outspokenness. Elliot Spitzer is an excellent, articular speaker for our cause. We don't have many! Let's support him. I only wish Current TV put him in the 7 to 8 slot, since we all love the Ed Show.

Paul, agree. I too thought it was RIDICULOUS when I tuned in the day Olbermann was fired waiting for some reference from the network that did the dastardly deed. NOTHING. I called it the elephant (pardon that word) in the room. What, we do not know something HUGE has happened to a progressive network which networks are oh too few in nature? Current was SUPPOSED to wax with some technological parity to MSNBC. It kept saying it would when I wrote a few emails personally. It never did. So I feel they took me for a fool, did not tell the truth and STILL to this day say nothing about this horrible event and STILL present a VERY VERY unprofessional broadcast.

So, when is Current going to face the music, let the commentators say SOMETHING about Olbermann even if they say they cannot because of litigation AND at the very least put the gd network on a HDTV format? GET INTO THE 21st century and COMPETE! ugh frustrated with the entire thing. We lost a great voice and I am still licking my wounds!

Well, I do watch. I got into Spitzer more but NO ONE absolutely NO ONE replaces Keith. My heart is broken. We have so few progressives and this had to happen. Makes me want to cry. I LOVED that guy and still do. I miss him as if he were a family member ...honestly you may think I am kidding but I'm not.

The other continuing never ending problem with Current is the format. It remains PATHETIC to say the least. Why should one watch something that is a box. Utterly awful. It would be like getting a color TV in the 60's and there were no programs in color but all black and white. This may as well be. There are NO graphics.

Spitzer is good I will say that. His analysis is excellent. It makes me sadder that his political life was taken from us by utterly idiotic behavior by a man who is SUPPOSEd to be so smart. Boy when it comes to that guys are just like a 13 year old. Sad, Spitzer could be president or at least VP or attorney general but he is better than second rate programming. That is the biggest gripe I have against Current. Keith was the glue and Bobbie is right!

Kudos to Current for cutting the over priced primadonna loose. All Keith did was bring his MSNBC schtick here, and that wasn't worth no millions of dollars. I'm sure that Current can get a far better return on investment than a high priced talking head. I might suggest you put his salary into actual jouranlists, become a news breaker instead of just one more news parrot.

And to the "The only reason I watched Current was because of Keith......." whiners here I've got this to say.

The cult of personality has demolished journalism. you all want to see a 'star', not hear news. The sooner we all remember that the news is supposed to be about news, not opinions, the sooner we can have a hope in hell of slipping the stranglehold corporate entities have upon our lives.

Have your Keith, follow him like puppies wherever he may go. Just remember, while you are tuning into the latest episode of "We're so good, They're so Bad" your children are being sold into indentured servitude.
    • ...and that's why CURRENT's numbers have been in freefall ever since.

I don't know about the 'prima donna' stuff, frankly it strikes me as massive rationalizationalist bullshit by the CURRENT seniors to justify their utterly stupid decision...

'Prima donna' or not, Olbermann put forth a great news product -- JOURNALISM in the public interest -- and the current CURRENT array doesn't come anywhere close to the quality of his efforts...

I was particularly struck by a soft-lob interview conducted by Jennifer Granholm of corporate right education darling MICHELLE RHEE that was an abomination to the subject, given investigations hovering on Rhee's prior role in DCSchools regarding test score cheating and budgetary malfeasance in which she kicked back millions to her former husband's TFA (Teach for America) knockoff providing scores of nonunion teacher trainees for the District's impoverished school budget, not to mention that Rhee's current husband, charter school founder and now mayor of Sacramento, California KEVIN JOHNSON, has been accused of child sexual abuse SEVEN TIMES, and that her STUDENTS FIRST PAC is funded by noneother than the KOCH BROTHERS, and other billionaire boys club folks seeking to dismantle public education as we know it....

...if THIS is what CURRENT puts forth as JOURNALISM, the interests served are NOT those of THE PEOPLE.... and all the progressive claims the network makes are nothing but warmed over borscht and bullshit by comparison to that which Keith Olbermann produced each night...
    • HERE HERE! If all of what you say is true I agree 100% with your conclusion!
