New programming sucks

What happen to you guy? You used to have such cool shows, and now it just the same 10 shows over and over. Are you going back to the old format soon? I do not like the new current TV.

    I am thrilled Elliot Spitzer is back on TV. I consider him one of the smartest and most articulate individual in news. I really like The Ed show, but lately, I have been flipping back and forth and then just watching Spitzer since he is SMART! He knows what questions to ask and he has the background facts to sustain his argument. Great new addition. Thank you. Vince Sgro

    Current TV offered its rebuttal to a scathing lawsuit filed by Keith Olbermann by filing a countersuit Friday detailing alleged bad behavior by its former talk show host and seeking a judge's ruling that he is not entitled to any more money from the network.

    The network's filing accuses Olbermann of breaching his contract by disclosing terms of the lucrative deal, refusing to cooperate in promoting the show and taking days off without permission.

    The countersuit comes one day after Olbermann sued his former employer, claiming it violated his agreement, engaged in shoddy production values and owed him more than $50 million.

    "Current seeks a determination that it is no longer obligated to pay a dime to Mr. Olbermann who, having already been paid handsomely for showing up sporadically and utterly failing to keep his end of the bargain, now seeks to be paid tens of millions more for not working at all," the filing states.

    The network and Olbermann have been at odds for months, and the dispute has escalated in the days since the former "Countdown" host was fired last week.

    Current's suit claims Olbermann has damaged the network and will continue to do so. It seeks unspecified damages.

    The networks' filing paints Olbermann as a petulant figure after he was hired to be Current's signature host, rejecting seven limousine companies, refusing to cooperate in promotional discussions and taking vacations with little notice. The complaint claims Olbermann wrote to Current co-founder Joel Hyatt to complain about a problem with a guest, "Give me a name so I know which of them to kill with my bare hands," and threw a glass mug on the set, which prompted a complaint from the set's landlord.

    After two days of court filings, it was clear neither side was pulling punches in its description of the other.

    Olbermann's lawsuit repeatedly attacked the network and described Hyatt and co-founder Al Gore as "dilettantes portraying entertainment industry executives."

    "Olbermann deeply regrets his decision to put his trust in Hyatt and Gore," the lawsuit claims. "Current had neither the desire nor the ability to produce a first rate news commentary show. Olbermann did not join Current to ruin his hard-won reputation and appear on a show that was an embarrassment."

    His lawsuit described a litany of technical issues, including shoddy equipment that wouldn't work if it rained, "terrible sound and filming" of the show, segments that abruptly dropped off the air, busted teleprompters and an earpiece that repeatedly malfunctioned.

    Current's filing Friday claims Olbermann refused to cooperate in discussions about improving the set, and in general refused to promote the network.

    Keith Olbermann was the reason I came to Current TV and he's the reason I won't be watching Current any more. His fan base is devoted to him and we'll follow him anywhere - if only there were others in the media as brilliant, outspoken and forward-thinking as our Keith but sadly there's only Rachel Maddow. Although I admire and respect her, she just doesn't have the "oomph" that Keith has, plus I'm not willing to spend even an hour watching the other news network that mistreated my hero. BIG mistake, Current - you had a hugely-popular media giant working for you but you misused him and fired him, thereby shooting yourselves in the collective foot, as others have told you. If you can just keep showcasing the talent and creativity of Morgan Spurlock you might survive but even he can't keep me from boycotting your station.

  • Personally, I think Lawrence O'Donnell (MSNBC) is doing as good a job or possibly even better than Keith. He and Rachel are my main politics programs to watch these days. I always look at their "competition" to see if they are telling a different story, and so far, they fail to accurately refute anything Lawrence or Rachel are saying. I'm not going to condemn Keith yet; the things Current is saying about him are only allegations at this point (as are the things he is saying about Current), so I'm taking a "wait and see" attitude for now. All I know for sure is that we need the gut-level truth telling of ALL these folks at this time of rampant "Karl-Rovian" lie factories in full production.

    I came to Current because of Olbermann. He got me through the Bush years.
    But he sucks. It seemed to me he was mailing it in at Current as soon as the first poor ratings came in. His $10 million chandelier ego is bigger than the progressivism he espouses. I hope you survive him. I stay with Current because of the Young Turks.

    But I think Granholm focuses too much on the superficial horse race and doesn't give us enough useful information about anything. Stephanie Miller is ridiculous. Her format may work on radio, but it is silly on TV. In the few minutes I watch her before I throw up, it's all lame comedy and nothing informative.

    Press could be good, but putting him in a closet really sets a bad tone for TV. Give him a real studio and let him have a panel. I hate Scarborough, but his round table discussions are often fascinating.

    It is embarrassing that you couldn't report the press conference at which the arrest of Zimmerman was announced until 7 p.m. You can't be a real news channel until you can cover the news in a timely way. I just hope Olbermann doesn't suck money out of you that could be used to improve Current. Good luck. I hope you succeed. MSNBC is hardly an honest voice. Cenk's exit interview told me what they are about, and I think it will only get worse under Comcast.

    i am so disappointed with the new program or same type msnbc. i love the documenteries and other shows that aired. oh god!! not another news show, and repeating shows. i rather watch repeats than another news station. why sell out. i am very disappointed. this is a pay cable station. you can get the same on network tv. so incredibly disatisfied with political shows.

  • I agree. Press is sincere but a boring Obama cheerleader. And his cramped studio negatively affects his show. Miller isn't funny, and I learn nothing (a key reason I watch The Turks) from her show. I want Current to succeed, but aside from Cenk you aren't making it. Dylan Ratigan was terrific on the Gavin Newsom Show, but I am not sure how much of what he said Newsom understood. Why is this show in such an awful time slot?

    • Tara Thralls is right, but I am shamefully going off message. Cenk is great because he doesn't buy the crap that Obama would be a progressive if only he weren't thwarted by the nasty GOP. Here are some things Obama did on his own.
      1. Promised the health-care industry there would be no public option in his health-care bill.
      2. Signed the JOBS bill, which exempts companies with revenue of less than $1 billion from auditing and allows them to do a pre-prospectus presentation and lie like fiends.
      3. Signed an executive order allowing him to detain indefinitely without trial any U.S. citizen that he deems to be a terrorist.
      4. Permitted NSA to build a huge site in Utah to monitor all our emails and phone calls and gain access to password protected data.
      5. Said we have learned from the BP disaster and are now drilling safely in the Gulf when companies are actually using the same blowout preventer technology BP had.
      6. Decided not to investigate Bush Administration officials ("we don't want to look back") or do anything to break up the banks or even deny bonuses to the people we were bailing out. But we did decide to look back and prosecute whistle blowers.
      7. Offered the GOP a grand bargain of deep cuts to Social Security and Medicare. That bargain is still on the table.
      The list goes on, but I won't bore you further. The Democrats' campaign basically is: "sure we're not great, but the GOP is so much worse you need us in the hope that maybe we might slow them down.

  • I'm afraid too many people will believe the twisted cheap shots being fostered by Faux and friends (the intractable beltway press).
    What people should really be concerned about is the concerted efforts of more than half our states to suppress voter rights. If they keep your neighbor down the street from voting today, YOU or ME will be next.
    We should also be really concerned that a documented BULLY who also adMITTedly mistreats dogs (and laughs both issues off when confronted) is running for president. We should be alarmed that this "person-impersonator" not only thinks that school class size doesn't matter, but also wants to privatize schools (particularly when you realize that one of his sons stands to be directly connected to the industry which funds for-profit schools).
    With regard to JOBS: Corporations DO NOT create JOBS. Jobs are created by DEMAND. A well-run company adds as few jobs as it can get away with, and only hires people when demand exceeds its ability to produce goods/services. I learned that on the first day of Economics 101.

  • Exactly. It's all demand. American corporations have learned how to be more profitable without growing the number of employees it has or adding cheap overseas employees or outsourcing to illegal alien staffed companies. This, with technology doing more and more
    and only investing 2% of GDP in our infrastructure all the money has gone up to the top 1 or 2%. 186,000 of our 600,000 bridges are in need of MAJOR work.
    Why is this put off? The 2007 collapse of the Minneapolis bridge that killed 13 people and no-one cared because THERE'S NO MONEY IN FIXING BRIDGES.
    But there are jobs in fixing bridges and not Malaysian but American jobs.
    Congress knows this will help so it will never get done 'til it's too late. Also, down the road it will be even more expensive. We just don't count for anything anymore.
    The middle class is like these bridges. There's no money in us anymore and we better wake to the fact that if we want something we will have to TAKE it. Sadly, I think Romney wins and this mentality will get worse. :$

  • We have watched the Right-Wing of this country do everything possible to stifle growth in our economy. They declared an all out war, driven by the Tea Party congress, funded by wealthy extremists and fully supported by major corporations, Evangelical Christians and the Catholic Church. The hate and disrespect of our President is so vile and so racist, they have made a mockery of our country and the concept that we, the USA, is the real beacon of freedom in the world. The conservative half of our nation, so full of hate, are now front and center. They are America, as it now exists. A country devoid of facts. A country addicted to beliefs in things they cannot see. Addicted to feelings. As the rest of the industrialized world moves toward science supported secular driven organizational concepts, we pine for rapture. As the evil seed of religious extremism infected the Muslim world, we have a front row seat for our own version. We are now the misty eyed monster of the end of times. Corporations have befriended the worst of us to help them control markets. This econ-religious relationship, forged years ago and now closer than ever have one mission in mind. Get the black guy out of office and make it so horrible, that the nation NEVER considers this idea again. Obama is not perfect, but has remarkably "hung in there" as has our nation. If all these forces were on the side of the American people, our economy could resemble the Clinton economy. But they are on their own side. So whether it's profits, or Jesus picking the winners and losers, these forces care not for their country. For they follow, what they call, a higher law. But that's giving them too much credit. It's greed marries insanity. It's money meets religion at the White house. And that evangelical finger is that much closer to the button. There is a lot at stake in this election. If Romney wins, and it looks like he will win big, mandate big, the ideas of freedom and liberty will be narrowed down to the white Christian consumer. They will be the Americans. And the rest of us? We will have to live with the knowledge that we let that happen. We were too busy. Too lazy. Too ignorant. We were in-competent when we couldn't be. When the media showed it's corporate hand during the Occupy movement that was it. Check-mate. Even our ideas are now spoon fed to us by the corporate PR group known as "the news."

    • I didn't realize that was prevalent, Tara. My bad. Programming? I'm back to catching my Young Turks fix on line, just like before. When they got rid of Keith, they basically lost me because he was part of a LINE-UP that interested me.
      Here's what I think happened- and it's not about cars or days off per say.
      If you remember, OWS was the big thing, and they kept sending him morons to be on the show, to represent OWS. Now, I know they were just nervous regular people, but most did more damage then the Right ever could have done. They were ill prepared and somewhat pointless. Keith had to "lead question" them just to stay on topic. Any topic. It was embarrassing and I think it had something to do with his vacation days. I know it's a guess, and maybe Keith had some personal stuff to deal with, how could we know? It's personal. But I think something with OWS is why he's not there.

    All those things could have been created without the government help. Just because they did it, doesn't mean they're the only ones that can. And most of what they do spends far more money than necessary to do.

    The government has two jobs and that is to protect its citizens from foreign invaders and to preform commerce with other countries. Anything else is them taking on what they are not needed to do.

    They weren't needed to do anything they've done such as making roads. They took it upon themselves to do it. They wanted to do it. They weren't needed to do it. We are not better for it. They created bridges they cannot maintain. Hence why some fall.

    There wouldn't be such a thing as hungry kids of the government didn't take so much money from their parents.

    The government you defend is the same government that keeps gays from getting married. They are the same people that kept women from voting. Blacks from voting. Japanese in interment camps. Too much government and you get too much control and you get stuff like that.

      More and more is the path to prosperity being destroyed while investors in the Global economy are chillin'. The children and grandchildren of the "doers" of our country are no longer "doing" anything that resembles a truly capitalistic existence. And they have ALL the money. Gone is the generation of the builders, creators and inventors. Replaced by fat, spoiled, entitled sloths of nothingness.
      Invested and amply budgeted, this small but critical aspect of our economic system has retired. And again- they have all the money. This aristocracy, which was one of the chief reasons for our revolution to begin with, are only concerned with the idea that their children will also be exempt from the competition. From all that nasty capitalism. From the requirements of ability, vision, and drive. And they have ALL the money. This is where our tax code gives all the incentives. 15% for the parental parasites. And the doers? We get taxed closer to 30%. Soldiers, doctors, teachers, construction workers, cops firemen, office workers and mechanics to name a few live with all the risk. We take on all the challenges and all the important jobs. We try to get our kids educated without owing hundreds of thousands. We are doing everything and we are getting spit on by the right wing. Every attempt to cut public education, to criminalize family planning, criminalize everything, to ship good jobs overseas, to cut taxes for the wealthy in order to de-fund environmental protection and economic regulation to protect us from being poisoned or put into a depression,(both have happened) every attempt at keeping us from voting or challenging this status-quo through demonstrations for change is criminal. Every new trade deal that kills American jobs, (like the one Obama just signed) sends one step closer to corporate slavery. The fix is in.
      The Right is defunding America so all our reliance will be on the corporation. The problem with that is America is (was?) ours and the corporation is a small group of wealthy citizens. The corporation is a fascist entity. And nothing scares them more than this: We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defence, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America. If I still believe in this does it make me a liberal? A progressive? A socialist? Am I a radical because I understand that we are all in this together? Jay Jay, like so many others, believe the hype. They have fallen for maybe the greatest con of all time. That your country is the enemy. This cult like hypnosis has worked remarkably on the dumb and the greedy the racist and the religious fanatic. These are the "soldiers" of the 1%.
      Their job- disrupt unity.
      But like Jay Jay they will be forever a bridesmaid but never the bride. These slugs can't see that they are waiting in the same line as the rest of us.

      Truly, it amazes me that the Faux News propaganda is so intense, that they have their sheeple believing that Obama is some kind of big "leftie"....not in my book! Manning, Assange, Drones, Wisconsin, the War on Drugs, Keystone XL Pipeline, Fossil Fuels, slaying of US Citizens in other countries without so much as a trial...The list is long of atrocities the POTUS has committed against Liberalism and his own (one-time) base. I don't know a single liberal who thinks Obama is acting like one of us!

      Funny how Fox has brain-washed so much of the population into thinking that Obama has done so much for the Liberal cause...I'm not seein' it. He's made a few concessions to the LGBT cause, and a bit of reaching out to Illegal Immigrants (after deporting more than any other Pres, by a long shot), but he has caved on almost every other issue... unless he always HAS been a Republican at heart, and is a Trojan Horse.

      The only other logical conclusion that I can come up with that makes any kind of sense is that he is merely a puppet, and the DC masterminds and corporate controllers are operating his strings....it's hard to know what Obama, himself, thinks...as a Constitutional Lawyer, I mean...he has betrayed the Constitution numerous times. He is a very smart man, he must KNOW that he is advocating unconstitutional policies...

      It's hard to say what he would do if he could actually do whatever the hell he thought was right. I'm not sure I KNOW him at all...Obama the President is certainly not Obama the Candidate. I prefer the guy I voted for, that's for damn sure.

      That said, I still will (half-heartedly) cast my vote for him, because he will probably appoint a slightly less Conservative Supreme Court Justice than Romney would. That's it. That's why I vote, because the Pres. gets to appoint the Supreme Court Justices, and that's a big deal.

      But I will not be out campaigning for Obama, and giving away tons of free buttons, like I did in 2008. I will not allow myself to have "HOPE" that things will improve...that way, if things DO happen to improve it will feel like a tremendous boon, an unplanned stroke of good luck, since it certainly won't be expected!

    • The only thing I'm sure of when it comes to President Obama, is that he helped usher the political landscape further to the right than he had any "right" to.
      He put Social Security and Medicare on the negotiation table! And all the things you mentioned. But I'll vote for him because Romney will give himself and his friends another huge unfunded tax break and call it a jobs program. And THEN go after every middle class and poor safety net systems under the guise of deficit reduction. In other words the rich will get a tax break and my Social Security will pay for it. That's what the republicans call a nuanced economic plan. They are just straight up dangerous. And Americans are just straight up stupid. Stupid and afraid of EVERYTHING. And it's that fear and ignorance (brought to you by Fox) that has half the country ready to vote against their own interests. Just to say they voted against the black guy with a funny name, because that is the extent of their understanding. We need a hero.

  • I guess Current has branched out into comedy shows, if Glenn Beck is on. Over at Fox, he ran off all his sponsors except for the "gold people" who sold gold coins to total idiots for 3-4 times their actual value. Who in the world would sponsor him? What is the name of his show?

    Um...I think someone has confused the radio station, KNEW 960 here in SF, with Current! KNEW replaced Stephanie Miller's live show with Glenn Beck's - (now I listen to NPR instead)! But, as far as I can tell, Glenn Beck is not on Current, or on any major cable station! I just searched my DirecTV programming, and did not find Glenn Beck being broadcast anywhere on TV, other than on his own network. Please tell us when this Glenn Beck show airs on Current, 'cause I'm not seeing it anywhere.

    And by the way, I am very happy with Current's new shows. Joy Behar is a great addition, and soon we will have John Fugelsang, too. I do miss Keith, that's for sure - he handled stories that nobody else would touch (Wikileaks, Manning, Occupy, etc)...now, it's just Democracy Now and Thom Hartmann if you want the real news (even TYT doesn't cover many important issues enough - i.e. Privacy, Assange, Manning, the bee crisis, nuclear dangers, environmental issues - once in a while they touch upon that stuff, but not nearly enough for me. As far as I know, only Amy Goodman and Thom Hartmann even reported on Julian Assange's speech to the United Nations last week).

    It seems that any news station that is not supported by their listeners is beholden to some corporation or other, and usually that means that certain news stories that conflict with the owner corporation's best interests are squashed, and not allowed to be reported.

    WTF has happened to this post?? Somehow it has become a dumping ground for a few immature political masterminds who are using this thread to shit on each other. How sad.
    Personally, I no longer think that Current's new programming sucks. Not at all. I think they've added many awesome new shows and hosts, and I applaud their effort. I think adding Joy Behar was a brilliant move, as was Bill Press and Stephanie Miller (thank God, I never have to suffer through Morning Joe ever, ever, ever again)...and John Fugelsang is the BEST!

    I miss Keith, yes, but the progressive movement does not rest upon his shoulders alone. Yes, this is an election year, and a bad one to be without him, but it takes two to create an argument, and from what I can gather, in his personal life, he was not as progressive and kumbaya as he was on the air, and Mr. Olbermann was a bit of a prima donna.

    So, we are here now, with three assholes who have totally taken over this post, and I gotta say, it pisses me off. If you are not discussing the Current programming, get the hell off this thread! You know who you are...and be it known, throwing insults at each other over the Internet is a big waste of time...you will not change each other, you will just annoy everyone else who was enjoying this thread.

    • Love Currents line-up of with Bill, Stephanie in the morning for me and adding Joy and John with the afternoon line-up is great. Just wrote the station that they need to put John Fugelsang name on the heading instead of "So That Happened" because I tell people about him, but they passed it up because they had no clue that was his show. I have many friends that have switched over to watching Current. I only watch MSNBC anymore to get Ed, Rachel, and Lawrence. Thank gawd for DVR!!!
