I’m upset

Allergies, help!

We just got a new hot tub, and have had all the chems set by the supplier, within a couple uses my hubby has broken out in hives on his tummy/chest, back and forearms. We have a pool that he has used lots of times with no problems. We are using clorox pool and spa line that we bought at walmart. In the hot tub right now is mineraluxe with chlorine granules, dazzle amaze plus, balance TH and balance TA, and this yellow clarifying stick that sits in the filter. The chems are all properly balanced, we've been dipping the test strips everyday to make sure. His ŕash gets alot more itchy after having a shower. any idea what this could be??? we are rather upset that he has only used it 4 times and is too irritated to use again.

Good day Leeann.  Thank you for taking the time to contact us.  I'm sorry to hear that your husband has had an adverse reaction after using the hot tub.

It is not unusual for people to break out in rashes or hives after using a hot tub.  There are a number of reasons that this can happen.  Improper water balance, especially the pH, can lead to skin, eye and nose irritations.  Since your hot tub is in proper balance, this is an unlikely cause for your husband.

Another reason for people to have skin irritations is too much chlorine or bromine.  It would appear that your chlorine level is good, so this likely won't be the cause.

From what you have indicated being used, I can see 2 reasons that he may have had a reaction.  First, it could be a reaction to one of the ingredients that makes up the chemicals.  If you know of any specific allergies he may have, we can check to see if it is in any of our products.  I cannot speak to the Walmart line of chemicals as those aren't made by us, but for the Mineraluxe or Dazzle products we can definitely look into those.  One thing we have seen over the last number of years is a sensitivity to one of the components in Amaze Plus.  There is a sulphate compound in the blend and there are some people that have sensitivities to that.  What we would recommend in this case is to eliminate the use of Amaze Plus and use just the chlorine granules to shock.

The other cause of rashes and hives that we see is something that is often referred to as hot tub rash or hot tub folliculitis.  It is caused by a bacteria called Pseudomonas aeruginosa.  This is a small infection that sets in at the base of the hair follicle.  When it reacts, it reveals itself in the form of small bumps or pimples and resembles chicken pox.  It is not uncommon for it to further react with a hot shower.  It is generally worse in areas that were covered by a bathing suit.  For men, around the waist and behind the knee area.  The treatment for Pseudomonas aeruginosa in the water is fairly easy, however for the person affected by it, it can take time.  There are no specific ointments or antibiotics available.  Products like calamine lotion have been known to provide relief.  It takes time for the body to shed the infection.  As skin cells and hairs fall out, the infection will disappear.  In mild cases, this rash will last only for a couple of days, however, to avoid further contaminating the hot tub, your husband should avoid using it for a week or two.  When he does choose to use it again, he should only be in the water for 5-10 minutes maximum.  Get out, dry off and see if the rash comes back.  He can then ease himself into regular use again when his skin doesn't show any reactions.

Pseudomonas can survive in the water for extended periods of time.  You should make sure that the water gets a really good shock with Dazzle Chlorine Granules.  You may also want to keep the sanitizer level at 5ppm for the next week or so.  This will help to ensure that the bacteria is killed.

I hope this is helpful.  Please let us know if you think there could be a sensitivity to a component in one of the products used and we'll be sure to get back to you quickly with that.  You can message me privately at mike.drummond@backyardbrands.com if you prefer.

The only other products we have that contain sulphates are pH-, Amaze, Amaze Plus and Oxygen.
