I’m frustrated

Just cleaned and refilled my hot tub and when I added all the poducts my water turned brown. Why and how do I correct it.

It is very frustrating. Cleaned my hot tub and refilled it, and the water was crystal clear. After I added all the chemicals, the water turned brown. And now the filter is brown too. Took it out and rinsed it off put it back in and it is brown again.

    Hi Colleen,

Thanks for your message. Sorry to hear you are having some difficulties with the water.

Where do you live? Are you on municipal water or well water? Is it a hard water area?

We often see this arise in hot tubs and pools when there is iron content in the water. On a fresh fill, the change the water goes through from being cold, to heated to balanced to treated is the biggest change the water will go through in its life cycle.

If there is iron, it can react into an oxidized state making it visible. It can leave stains or discolorations on surfaces and filters. This is why the filter went brown. Since the filter can remove very fine particulate, it will continue to collect this residue in the water. This is not a bad thing, but will require some ongoing work on your part to clean the filter.

What we would recommend is using the Stain & Scale 1: Initial before the water is heated. Either add the dose when there is 4-6 inches of water in the footwell or once the hot tub has been refilled. Give it an hour or so to circulate before the heat kicks on. This should help to avoid this from happening.

Your best bet now is to bring a water sample to your closest Dazzle retailer. They will be able to do a series of tests including iron. This will give you a better idea of what you are dealing with in your hot tub. If you could also bring a sample of the source water uses for filling the hot tub, they can check it as well.

    Hope this helps!
