I’m frustrated

Rust stains in a new tub!

We live in the country and just purchased a new spa one month ago. We added Stain & Scale 1 as per the directions at the first fill and have been using the Stain & Scale 2 weekly. At first we struggled to get the PH and alkalinity where it should be, and now that is sorted out. Since then, we are having trouble keeping the bromine levels where they should be (adding both tabs and granules as per our dealer's recommendations). Yesterday we noticed unsightly rust stains on our jets and around the water line and head cushions. No doubt the filter isn't so pretty either but we haven't checked that yet. We are on well water and some iron showed up in the two water tests we have had. We filled the tub without softened water (bypassed it). HOW DO WE CONTROL THESE UGLY RUST STAINS?

    Hi Jane,

Thanks for your message. I certainly understand your frustration.

One of the most difficult things to control in a hot tub is the scaling and staining potential of the water. The hotter it gets, the quicker these things tend to happen. Stain & Scale 1 and 2 are designed to offer that level of protection. However, there are limits to how well it can work. This is directly related to the hardness of the water and the amount of metals that are present. If you are getting rust spots on the surface, jets and pillows, it is an indication that the level of iron is fairly high and is oxidizing onto those surfaces.

The solution to the metals in the water would be to either completely fill through the softener or at least half fill the hot tub with softened water. This way, the amount of metals introduced to the water are much lower. This would give the stain & scale control products a better chance to protect the tub.

Before doing anything, the best thing to do would be to bring a sample of the non-softened well water AND a sample of the softened water to your Dazzle retailer to determine which source is best to be used for your tub. From there the best course of action can be instructed.

In the meantime, you can double the dose of Stain & Scale 2 in the water. Wipe the rust stains until they fade or go away completely.

I hope this helps. Please be patient, it can be corrected.

    Have a wonderful day!
