Smelly hot tub water

We changed our hot tub water after 3 months of light use because there was a funny odor to the water (wet towel, mothball smell). The new water was great but only last 2 weeks - we just did our weekly treatment of dazzle - took the lid off the water smelled great added the amaze plus and within an hour the water smelled again. Any ideas?

    Good day Martha!

I'm sorry to hear that you are having issues with your hot tub. There are a number of reasons you could be experiencing the smell. Most common with what you have described is something called a biofilm. Biofilms have been referred to by many names, but the most common name is white water mould. In essence, it is a build-up of micro-organisms.

Perhaps you could give us a call and we can discuss your situation further. You can reach us at our office at 866-875-0012. Press 0 and someone will be able to direct your call to me or someone else that could assist you. Alternatively, you can contact me on my mobile phone at 416-970-4214.

I look forward to hearing from you.

  • We had this issue...what had worked for the two of us was to increase the filter cycle lenths to 2.5 hours and 3 hours. We also used 1 cap ful of Nature Sheen (1,500l hot tub) and kept the filter cycle on until it was finally removed. We had to do the proceedure twice. After that we increased the filter cycles as detailed above and haven't had a problem since.

As a maintenance rule we stricktly follow the Dazzle care instructions.

  • Did you buy your tub used? If so, the previous owner may have sprinkled mothballs underneath the tub to keep mice away. I did this myself just recently only to learn later that mothballs are poison. Not to mention it takes a long time to get the smell to go away. I removed all the mothballs i had laid, then have been airing out the tub for two months now and there still is some residule smell left. I'm in the process of doing more research since i'm not certain that it's safe even yet due to the fact that i can still smell it (if you can smell it, doesn't that mean you are breathing in poison). I may be overly paranoid but after what i've read mothballs have some very nasty chemicals that are nothing to mess with.
