Why Do Dirt and Debris Accumulate on the Bottom of My Pool?

Dirt and debris can often get trapped at the bottom of your pool if your return jets are not angled properly. Pool owners often angle the return jets upward, which creates a rippling effect and only circulates the top of the water. For optimum circulation, always ensure that the return jets are pointed downward and to the right on a 45° angle. This will help stop dirt and debris from accumulating at the bottom of your pool.

  • I have an aqua genie and the dirt and grit always gathers at the bottom. It is a daily affair.

Hi Dave! Thanks for your question!!!

Many pools have 'dead spots', which are areas of low circulation. In these areas, dirt, leaves and debris will build up because there is insufficent water flow to prevent it from happening.

The Aqua Genie is designed to create the proper current to force dirt and debris to your skimmer and filter. If you are finding that it's performance do not meet your expectations, it may be that something is not functioning properly. To begin with, feel the pressure that comes out of the pressure chamber. There are 3 outlets to check. The pressure should be strong enough to push your hand away from the wall.

If the pressure is not sufficient, check your pump and filter. Ensure the pump is properly primed and that there is not a lot of air in the pump basket. Check the filter pressure to ensure that it is not 'plugged'. If the pressure is on the high side (around 20psi), backwash the filter for 5 minutes. After the backwash, you should see a significant drop in pressure. This means that water is passing through the filter better.

Another consideration would be the age and cleanliness of the filter media. Filters should be cleaned every fall as part of the closing process. Chemically cleaning the sand strips away all the oils, greases, mineral and metal deposits that have accumulated during the summer.

If the pump maintains a proper prime and the filter is clean and working properly, then perhaps something is malfunctioning with the Aqua Genie. You may want to discuss it with your local Dazzle retailer to find out what can be done.

I hope you find this helpful. Let me know if you have any other questions!
