Tell us about: Traps

  • Announcement
  • Updated 3 years ago
This is a new little series of posts I'll be making to find out your guys impressions about certain aspects of the game.

What we're after here is the answers to a few specific questions.

This is NOT an ideas thread - feel free to suggest tweaks, but it's not an excuse to suggest something completely different.

1. Do you use the traps? If not, why not?
2. Which traps do you use?
3. Do you use them during zombie attacks if so which ones?
4. How do you feel about the build costs?

Thanks guys - look forward to hearing your input.

1. i barely use traps during zed attacks because i hate when a single zombie blows up a level 3 bomb or any bomb for that matter. WOM takes lots of resources to rebuild.

2.all of em

3.i put them on sides that i notice the most zombies pass through(ding dongs and scatter bombs) WOMS are put outside right next to my barricades.

4. WOM rebuild cost is too much in my opinion

EDIT: the build costs are fine. the rebuilding is whats killing me.(WOM)

The WOM will be switched to Ammo cost for reloading in the Halloween update.

Thats pretty sweet. thanks con!! Do you guys have any idea how much it takes to craft say, 10 bullets??

I would be very carefull with saying "thank you". To switch the cost to ammo DOESNT MEAN a guarantee it will be NOT EXPENSIVE! If you have to defend your compound twice a day (against raiders)... you may will run too low on ammo (WOM) to fight back. Time will show... but right now i never would say "thank you".

That is true, but i am not the ungrateful type, i do not make Separate threads saying "WOM cost is too much" i only did it now because he asked us. I have thousands of components to make ammo, so i don need to worry about that. Unless con decides to add new components to craft ammunition.

1. Yes
2. I feel like it's feasible to use permanent traps during zombie attacks and compound raids. Temporary traps should be used during raids
3. There should an extra button that allows you to turn off/disable temporary traps such as bombs and "ding dongs". Those should be saved for compound raids. Permanent traps should be tested during zombie attacks so that you know what it's like to use traps. This should be the same as if you were going on a mission to an abandoned compound where you're testing your skills in disabling traps. There should be a button for testing your trap "placement" around your compound. Being able to control your activation of traps is literally the same as being able to go to missions where you test your trap disabling skills (This only applies if you implement your consideration for making an abandoned compound as a location).
4. Very fair for anyone. I see no one complaining including me, so it's pretty good.

1. Yes but only the wire traps.

2. Wire traps only and ding dong I once.

3. I used the ding dong I once, but I really only use wire traps because in my opinion, it's kind of the only trap that holds constant significance during zombie attacks especially as they slow them down and allow a greater window to reload weapons and recover from a melee attack.

4. I've tried the ding dong I once but that was it, so I just stuck with only wire traps. The build costs really don't affect the gameplay for me personally because I only build the wire traps and upgrade them now, but I am hoping to upgrade my battery array to build a WOM, though I've seen a lot of opinions on it that it might possibly use up a lot of resources.

I used them once during a zed attack but found the rebuild a pain (the time cost more than the resources at this point in the game for me).

I read a great post here recently that suggested players should have the option to activate some traps during a zed attack while leaving others unactivated.

I think this would allow us to defend an under(wo)manned compound more easily and cost-effectively. For example, I'd love to have use my wire traps to slow down zed's at key choke points without wasting explosive traps.

Perhaps this option work with some sort of pre-attack checklist?

All this being said, I loved watching the explosive traps go off -- great work on the fx.

Traps are good.
Repairing (rebuilding) them is kind of a nuisance, but c'est la vie, that is the cost of war....so c'est la guerre.

The Wire Traps are my favorites for 4 reasons:
#1- They don't have to be rebuilt every time.
#2- You can watch them shred Zombies.
#3- The are VERY effective at slowing attackers down.
#4- I love the sound they make.

Blood, Blood, every where,
And all the boards did shrink;
Gore, Gore, every where,
Nor any drop to drink.

Agreed, Herr Doktor!

And congrats again on the new degree. I finished my PhD a year ago and it took a good while for things to feel real again.

Hope your transition back to the land of the living goes well (hero's journey and all)!

Thanks

It only took me 40 years.
(2 wars, 4 failed marriages, 1 bankruptcy, 1 nervous breakdown, etc, ad infinitum).

Long story, happy ending.

If I was a smart man I would put it all on paper and call it a "Book".

  1. I've built all the traps and decoys but mainly because it was all I had left to build (and I was curious of course)

  2. I've built them all, as I said but I haven't "used" any that I know of

  3. Not yet though I might eventually but I don't currently have a problem holding off the zombie attacks without using them so I don't "need" to use them :)

  4. They seemed fine to me but I haven't had a need to replace any so perhaps I'm not the ideal person to answer that question.
  5. :)

The only tweak I'd suggest is a bit of a whopper and that would be to allow us to view replays of attacks on our compound (so we can see if out traps and setups were effective). However I suspect that would require some serious time and money on your end so I'm not holding my breath (at the moment lol). :-D

Here's the thread to what you're wanting to implement: https://getsatisfaction.com/deadzone/...

From what you said about serious time and money, adding a video playback would probably make the game "lag" more than it is presently, which would probably aggravate some of the people who play the game. Anyway, enjoy reading the thread!

cameras/replays are very important to enhance tactical aspect of the game. one step further to interactive pvp. implementation is quite challenging i guess too

Well, if you're one of those people who have very bad computers, you would be mad/frustrated if this update was implemented.

1. Yes, but I left them solely for the raiders. Traps are kinda expensive in term of finding the proper components

2. All of them

3. No, expect for testing how it will go off

4. Appropriate,

  1. I stockpile all the traps I can, but never use them. If they could be placed in smaller areas I could cover my flanks better and use the spares more aggressively.

  2. The wire trap and the W.O.M. are fun to use against the zombies. I place my disposable traps only within my compound.

  3. I used the disposable traps in a zombie attack once and I regretted it. I don't want to waste that many resources just to kill a lone zombie.

  4. The build cost is worth it for PvE but it is otherwise a waste for zombie attacks unless you can manage to get a group of them to blow-up together.

i hardly don't ever use bombs i try to save them for Pvp if i get attacked. I don't pick up enough C4 to keep making them.

1. Do you use the traps? If not, why not?
I try not to I only use them if the team at base is really under powered. Other than that my team can usually brush off any zombie attack

2. Which traps do you use?
I like using the Wire traps in combination with the WoM it gives some real bad hurt.
With the ding-dong explosives I feel like they take up too much room when placing them to make them effective. If i could place them more closely or fuse them into one bomb like a ding dong lll+ll
3. Do you use them during zombie attacks if so which ones?
rarely will i use them for a zombie attack.
4. How do you feel about the build costs?
its a pain but the cost are reasonable and i don't mind them.

1. I built them all, I haven't used them although some were gone after a raid, so either they were disarmed or used.

2. Like I said, I built them all, so I guess I technically use them all, but since I never use them on zombies I'm not sure.

3. No. The zombies at level 34 aren't causing me any issues at all, so I haven't felt a need to activate the traps. I was kind of curious about them, but not enough to bother activating them then having to rebuild them.

4. The traps are cheap. I barely noticed any cost to rebuild them the one time I had to, but if it was every time I logged in I might feel differently. I don't have anything else to build anyway.

Might be nice to be able to activate the wire traps independently, or wire traps and wom.

Also the traps are kind of big for what they are, so I'm not sure even if I activated them how much use I'd get out of them. I have them set up more to annoy people bent on destruction than to help out defense.

Hanzo pretty much describes my situation (except I've never been raided).

Someone below mentioned that when the explosive traps go off, the base should remain where they are, so you don't have to try and remember where you put them. You would just have to repair or reload them to get them working again. I second that idea.

1. Do you use the traps? If not, why not?

I don't use the explosives as they cost too much to replace.

2. Which traps do you use?

The perma traps. Wheel inside my cades incase the zeds break through.

3. Do you use them during zombie attacks if so which ones?

Yep, the perma ones.

4. How do you feel about the build costs?

Initial building ok but fully replacing deactivated explosives is expensive.

I never use traps for zombie raids, the explosives are too rare for me to waste a one time use item on them. One time use items would never be useful for any sort of horde attack. As I have only been attacked by another player once since the traps went live and I know at least one trap injured a survivor it seems they are at least somewhat effective.

A tweak I would suggest is to not have the explosive traps disappear completely after being triggered, instead leave their base intact and simply repair them afterwards. The one time I had mine triggered I forgot where I had placed everything heh.

I agree about "marking" where the traps used to be. Whenever I'm raided I have to check in construction if I can build any traps (I have built them all) and if I can, I know someone set one off or disarmed it.

Same as Etimai, I can't remember all the placement of my traps so it would be nice to see where they used to be.

1. Do you use the traps? If not, why not?
I have them all reserved for riders.

2. Which traps do you use?
None.

3. Do you use them during zombie attacks if so which ones?
No, never. I can hold the hordes with my survivors & it feels like a waste of resources, considering the zombies casualties.

4. How do you feel about the build costs?
They aren't really expensive, but if you activate em on every attack, you'll have to scavenge a lot(explosives)

I would like to suggest, lessen traps but much more effective. Like just 3 or 4, and if you get caught, o loose a 50% of you total hp, or instantly death.

It sounds like few people use traps on zombies, because the build cost seem too high, because explosives are too rare.

This would also allow adding a level 4 explosive trap.

And may I suggest "PvP in general" for the subject of one of these feedback threads?

1. Do you use the traps? If not, why not?
i built most of them the first time they got out. stopped doing that, and if any trap got used, i don`t re-build

2. Which traps do you use?

3. Do you use them during zombie attacks if so which ones?
no, they are practicly useless against zombies.

4. How do you feel about the build costs?
quite low now, but at first, they use too much explosives. now i have so much explosives it doesn`t matter.

- the PvP option is still not working properly. not much use for attacking another player.

1. Do you use the traps? If not, why not?

I use Wire Traps because they have no cost for each use and are useful during zombie attacks. I don't use other traps because I then couldn't use Wire Traps without setting all the other traps off during zombie attacks.

2. Which traps do you use?

Wire Traps.

3. Do you use them during zombie attacks if so which ones?

I used to have four open areas in my defense where I would lure zombies into using Wire Traps, but the recent update means they simply attack where my survivors are stationed. Thus, now I just put the traps in front of my survivor areas. The old way was much more fun.

4. How do you feel about the build costs?

Initial build costs are fine, but it's hard to justify spending explosives, which are rare enough that I don't want to waste them on zombies. I wouldn't mind using them against players, but at the moment I can't build explosives without setting them off along with my Wire Traps.

While you say this is not an idea thread, traps would have to be free or very cheap for me to ever justify using them against zombies. I wouldn't mind using the current traps against players, but as it is I don't build them because of not wanting to waste them against zombies.

I used to use all the traps in my old compound defence layout mainly because all my one-time use traps were lurking inside. But in my new layout I don't use them at all because some of my one-time use traps were outside of my fortifications.

I use all of them 1) Because decoys look pwetty :D 2) Hidden explosive traps = pain for human raiders. I should know from first hand experience 3) Wire traps can help slow down zombies 4) WOM is a MASSIVE P in the A, so it's quite useful.

I find the costs to be worth it ... except when the traps are wasted in zombie raids and I find the decoys to be useless as when I revenge raid someone they go off instantly when my recon spots them, which is kinda makes them pointless. Perhaps make the decoys go off if 1) Someone walks too close to it or 2) Someone fails/succeeds to disarm it.

I have built them all.
I don't bother with them for zombies because I don't need them and although metal is free at my level, why bother.
I find they don't do much for PvP either but if I got the explosives, might as well use them.

I'd love for wire traps to be always on as they cost nothing anyways.

Ammo cost for WoM means I might as well dismantle them. Unless there is so much ammo to scavenge that it makes the system meaningless.

would it be a fair suggestion to add traps to barricades? if they go down then they set of the trap or if you are near the barricade it activates the trap.
