I honestly cannot stand facebook games. Almost every facebook game is on there because they want people to pay for micro transactions. When you see a free flash game on the internet, you can really see that they made it because they have a love of making games and want to share their artwork with the world.

Conartistgames used to be this way, and maybe they still are, but now that they have released a facebook game, they have lost some respect. At least from me. I mean if you have to remove features from a game or add features that block a player from the full experience (I.E. Adding time between missions, time to remove junk, time to upgrade, time to get food, time to have survivors return, actual waiting time to progress), you have began your journey into becoming the next Zynga.

I totally understand the reasons for choosing the facebook market. It's a great way to earn some money and get lots of users.

On the other hand this choice makes me sad bacause I can see the potential this game would have as a single player game (perhaps with multiplayer too). I'd easily pay 15 bucks for it just like any other indie game in that form, but I probably won't spend a dime on it now since I really hate the facebook-profit model. Sorry.

But I'll keep following it and keep hoping for some games from you in the future outside all of that which is facebook and social media.

    • Con Art Put Dead Zone In FB so that they can have the budget to upgrade the game engine... so please Understand them... And they will just tell you the other Site...
    • It's basically a single player game o_O. Just because it's on Facebook it doesn't mean it's multiplayer or gated by friends. This game is the most free Facebook game I've seen (and I work in the industry)... that will probably mean it doesn't make tons of money but whatever, it's Con Artists' choice.

You guys should be thankful it IS so free! 99% of other Facebook games have a lot more viral spam only features. I haven't seen any in this.

I also understand reasoning behind game being for FB. I never really understood phenomena of *Ville Zynga games before, (and still don't). Dead Zone is a good game, even considering it's BETA status. I will happily throw some money into it, not to get fuel (don't really need it [ATM at least]) but to support Con and the Team in their future endeavors. I will enjoy the game for now, and see where it leads us.

Hope the best for the Con and the Team.

  • I agree with Viktor Sander in that you should make another version available for purchase. I would buy a game like this. I love the mechanics of it. Facebook will be a good way to get more fans and then you could release another version for offline. I would suggest shorter waiting times on an offline version though lol.

  • I’m Disappointed
    5
Seems like a pretty good game so far, but I'm very disappointed with it being released on Facebook.

I hate games with micro-transactions, and there's no way I'm going to financially support this game if it stays along the same track. To me, there's really no point in spending loads of money on a WhateverVille clone with no story or replay value.

Sure, some could argue I don't need to pay in order to enjoy the game. But what if I want some of the really cool gear in the Fuel Trading Post? How long will it take for me to scrounge up all that fuel? A very long time, I bet.

I would definitely support the game if it came out on a different platform for a one-time fee. If you had a donate button on your site, I'd definitely throw in a couple of bucks to help out. But there's no way I'm spending 20 dollars (200 fuel) for one in-game item. I could buy two classic PC games for the price of one imaginary rifle.

So far, the game has a very cool concept. I'd love to see what else you guys are going to do with. I'll stick around through the Beta to help improve the game. But I'm not spending any money on it.

I've played it for a bit and I've had enough. The time penalty aspect if the game is infuriating and all just to drive real sales of virtual fuel. The fact that it's integrated into facebook is another massive turn off.

I bought the survival kit for the last game and was happy to do so, it was a nice sized extra bit of content for a game I really enjoyed. I would have much rather seen con artists go down one of the more traditional models for 'indy' software. Either a short but fully playable demo followed by a pay-for full release (and follow up dlc) or the more TF2 style of full game and paid for but largely cosmetic extras. I'm sure there are plenty of other models that could be adopted to allow your players to actually enjoy the game for however long they want without effectively forcing them to either stop playing or pay up after every 5 minute mission.

It's Missing the Action from the previous games. And where's the story?!??! If I had a better computer and I hadn't played Union City, I would say it's a good game. But I fell in love with the style of Union City's action where you controlled the attacks. I also dislike the idea of it using facebook. what was wrong with it being just a normal flash-based game?

I completely agree with MrZackarius. I would have preferred that the game...

  • Dead Zone and Union City are completely different games, set in the same universe. Some people will like the action of UC, others will like the strategy and tactical gameplay of Dead Zone. It is completely personal - not everyone likes every type of game (I'm not a big fan of FPS games, but that's OK, I just don't play them!).

As Con asked above, how would you feel if the game was exactly the same, but in an environment outside of Facebook? Would this change your opinions of the game? We're looking into options other than just FB, it's just a starting point.

      2) i agree with the others however... if this wasnt an interactional strategy game id pay to buy it (like an RTS game... you guys should look into making something like that :D)
but yes... people who like con games plzzz give this game at least 15 minutes of playtime...

thanks for the fast and mind building posts here. Many Guys include me would pay for this game, I just have a look on minecraft the gameplay is not mine but the idea behind the project is awesome. U have to pay 20euro for it or 30$ and u get the game and the devs bring more and more content. Iam not negative about this facebook stuff but in my mind this is the best game in this category and Iam sure that this game can get larger. For me its cool to see that CONA. cares about our ( the customers ) minds and want to bring their ideas in the project thats awesome, so if the game is in the customers mind worth to be spread in the world they will share it with their friends, for this part we dont need facebook ;)

And even if we will wait 1 year more for the normal release we will still be fans and supporters.

    Regards Dani

Personally I don't mind about the platform being on Facebook. In fact, unlike other games, not "buying" points does not give you a big disadvantage in this game.

The problem I have is the real time scenario. I dislike how we have to wait hours for people to clean up piles for resources. I think its just a waste of time. Maybe it can be something turn based instead?
    • view 3 more comments
    • I was thinking more like a stop time button for when I was away. If you want to let my buildings all get completed AND my survivors not be dehydrated and starving when I get back then I won't complain. I also have played a little more and realized that I most likely will be able to stock pile more than a week of food and water so I don't think I will avoid the game. It's just too fun.
    • I support the hibernate option. It's a lot more fun to pick up games when your people aren't dead after leaving them alone for a bit.

Also, im having this issue where its saying i need the latest version of flashplayer but i already have it. i downloaded the one if tells you to download and it is still saying i need the latest version.

I think people need to understand why there is a time frame to do stuff like "clearing stuff out", "returning from a mission" and why you would pay or "get fuel" to do it. if there wasn't a time laps you would have 50k people connected to the server at once it would boggle it down, this way people leave the server and come back it creates rotating users and keeps the server load down. now buying fuel or speeding up the processes keeps you on the server. this cost Con money to keep this server running. its not a one time charge. so few things, it needs regular income to keep it going. Con need to eat on top of it. and i believe there are a few of them who did this game with con they need to get paid as well. Next updates they are and will keep adding to the game this takes time and money, again the game needs income for this. this is why the buying of fuel to speed along the game. what it make people happier if con said if you play free version we will have the times if you pay a monthly charge we will take the times away. its the same concept just presented in a more creative way. this is why every network game uses this concept. but match these up with all the other games you will find this has ton more game play other then you use you energy wait to get more.

Con big 4 stars man best game on face book. love how you kept the game unlike zynga games. you will diff get awards for this one. would love to see it on the Wii, xbox etc and stand alone mobile apps .

I guess everyones already said most of my thoughts. But I feel the same as many of them. I would gladyly pay $15+ for a good game, but micro transactions kill me, its just not worth it. I would have loved to play a game that didnt require either money to play longer or a huge wait time at higher levels.

That being said I can see the effort put into this game and I can't say its flawed from start to finish, it just has an Achilles heel of sorts. While I probably will not play this game anymore if it stays with its current model, I cannot wait to see what you guys come up with next.
    • Once you hit the higher levels you are supposed to be able to loot fuel from the scavange points. I haven't got any yet but and only looting level 16 buildings as of right now. If you could pick up 5 or so fuel each time you hit a building you could grow your fuel rather quickly and never need to provide any hard cash. That being said I feel that I need to restate that I haven't got any yet and it could be much slower for looting fule (1 every 3 buildings)
    • You can actually scavenge fuel. I've gotten fuel at (if I recall correctly) mostly hardware stores, and warehouses. I've also pulled some (again, if I recall correctly) from grocery stores.

This is honestly exactly what I was expecting when it came to Union City. A STRATEGY game where you have to make realistic decisions and can set up a base of defense and the likes. I'm ecstatic with how Union City turned out, and I'm ecstatic about how Dead Zone is turning out. There is NOTHING wrong with this game being on Facebook, and the only reason people are so immediate to discount Facebook games is because of Zynga producing fifty different versions of the same game. This is something different, unique, satisfying, and rewarding. It gives me a sense of accomplishment when my survivors finish a task such as upgrading their base or just simply tidying it up. Building my first sustainable farm made me feel like I was PROGRESSING. I felt as if things were rolling, the world was turning, and the thins I was doing mattered to my survivors. When my base was attacked by a zombie horde it gave me a feeling of involvement. This ISN'T just a "click button, sit and wait for three hours, click other button" game. These zombies will try to kill you, and they won't wait for your survivors to return and they won't wait for you to finish building that guard tower. It is very involving so far as a casual game goes, and I don't look down or question Con's thinking at all for making a pay to play game. He puts out 5 star top notch quality games for NOTHING and when he asks for a little compensation, all he gets it a few bucks. Its about time that he gets the payment he deserves for all the amazing games he has given us over the years. I enjoy this game in every aspect and am honored to be apart of its beta testers just as I was apart of the UC beta testers. Being as how its so simple to play I can even open my laptop in the middle of class, upgrade a few buildings, and get right back to studying. There is nothing wrong with casual games when they're done right, and Con has done us right with Dead Zone. There, I believe I've said everything on my mind.

Well, it seems like a good way for the team to bring in some revenue, and I guess its okay if the microtransaction thing doesnt get out of hand. In fact, who says that the team has to follow the stereotypical facebook game model? Maybe this is their opportunity to change the facebook gaming model instead of following it. They can do a lot with this project if it doesnt fall into the common trap of friend to friend spam, and it can show bigger companies that theres a big enough market for real games on facebook.

I have almost no complain about this game at all.Multiplayer and strategy adds realism cause well the world is utterly devastated and to survive you must abandon whats left of your humanity and steal supplies from other survivors and also you traveled to get supplies? Of course it takes time to return to your compound.Survival of the fittest if i might say. This game has room for a lot of updates and improvement and as con stated a few posts above ,his previous game's premium content didnt have much support(i didnt buy it either)But i'm 100% going to support Dead Zone because supporting it means we support con and his team and we get better content in the future.About the facebook platform now.If they succeed in fullfiling their plans and goals then i dont care about the game being on facebook.First post here and i sincerely hope that con and his team succeeds.Cheers you have my support!

thats a real downside for me

i already spend some money on it and iam fine with it...but i have to say the waiting times are too high... especially at higher levels...i understand what the waiting times are for and their okay, but they are just too long...maybe cap them at one hour max(and lower the xp!!).?? then my 2,5 k fuel would have last some longer (cause otherwise its a little bit tooo expensive)XD ...

  • Suggestions:

1.Cancel the do mission time penalty, keep the construction time penalty if you still want so.And other premium contents you can still keep them.

Again freemium (business model) never means such penalty of time of playing, drankensang, deadfrontier, those famous browser MMO never have such limitation of time of playing, and they are the freemium model too.

2.Make the secondary server for the monthly paid people, and then cancel any premium stuffs in that server.

As being a beta tester of the last game i was not saddened by the fact this was on facebook but i found that this game kicks the ass of anything else on facebook, Before this all the games on facebook were summed up on "if you give us 50 bucks, you will be the best player in the world............. before someone else buys something more then 50 bucks." NO this game is very different I dont plant and wait 3 hours, WHAT i can do it go to some apartments/slash houses say funny stuff in my brain like
    (•_•)
"I have come here to chew bubblegum And I'm all out of bubble gum.....
    ( •_•)>⌐■-■
    and kick ass.......
    (⌐■_■)
And I'm all out of bubble gum.....

then kill zombies and then i take a break for a couple hours and if you buy fuel ya its great but its not like XD omg i have fuelz now i rule the DEAD ZONE no you still have to level still have to build things still have to search to level and what most people are whining about are just out right dumb this BETA give it sometime so cheer up and shut up and play the best game in the world XD

  • I’m sad that Con Artist would have to do this.
As a person who has played a fair share of Facebook games, this one is at least slightly better than most. For one, it's not just building a base, you also get to go out and explore. Not all that better than just button clicking, but it requires a bit of thought at least. Second, the "less than 5 minutes is free" is present in this game. Doesn't help at all when construction times start increasing to hours and days, but again, better than other games. Third, you can get fuel, albeit at an amount that can't be used to do much. You probably couldn't buy the XM-8 even if you never used a bit of fuel and cleaned up every bit of junk.
TL;DR, it's a less crappy Facebook game, but not by much.

Sooooooooo... after reading all the other post am not sure what to write x.x
Gee, well the gameplay so far its very awesome, ask yourself: "how many zombie strategy and mmoprgs you can name?", not many. As second thing, the game needs a storyline, i sure hope its being developed right now, am not getting tired of scavenging building after building since each time, and i dont know why, its diferent and exciting.
I never payed to play a game since its not necessary to enjoy one, if u like some of the "cool things" on the fuel post, just level up, and go scavenge a really high level uilding, you'll find some sweet lot to use (personal experience).

PS: i did not read every post to be honest x.x; so if this is writen by somebody else in the previous replies am sorry xP

You know that Developers uses Facebook to get fortune of? I like the game since it is DIFFERENT than the other lame girlie games like CityVille and Mafia Wars 2. Fuck Energies when you have The Last Stand Dead Zone. I think the system is fair enough. Con didn't add energy usage but instead,he planted the time system whenever you go to scavenging. Hence, people can just play Dead Zone as it is some strategy games without worrying about energies and stuff. Facebook is like an advertiser which people from all around the world can see it and play it. Plus,Facebook has Facebook Credits and there's billions of users who uses PayPal and Facebook Credits to buy game credits. The Developer can get rich in just days or weeks rather than working your ass off a 24/7 store listening to people who speaks non-sense like parents do. So,don't hate the game.

  • I don't see much of a problem of it being on facebook it's the fact that FB is not really well designed for a game this complex. I'd like to see this on FB as well as an improved version on a platform like Armorgames which is where I got hooked on you guys.

First of all, I want to say this is an extraordinary game already. I've long felt that a game of this nature should exist - a survival horror RTS, with resource management, base defense, and making risky expeditions out into dark territory. I have nothing but praise for how Last Stand has evolved. I also can completely understand why you moved to Facebook and the economic model of StuffVille; it's proven, profitable, and a much stronger pipeline.

However I also have to express disappointment because I would prefer it to be a standalone game. I like to play games on my time, and these design specs by nature force me to play it on the game's time. I would gladly pay big bucks (depending on the promises of the development cycle) through Kickstarter/Steam for a download or browser game that combines this interface with something akin to Last Stand 1/2, where I set survivors to tasks and time advances immediately to completion. Leave in the "players" in surrounding cities as competing bots with varying degrees of aggression and focus, Civilization-style. Civilization: Last Stand.

I'm not saying to abandon the Facebook model, get that StuffVille income! But take these assets and their money and give us hope for a standalone game too, please.

I see all the top comments that are bashing the game and saying they are feeling sad and disappointed and angry. I now feel confused because of this due to the fact that this game is amazing, and most of the people in the forum back this opinion up. I love the time aspect of the game, I can do something and leave for a day or two, come back and still see progress, even if I don't have time to play. Maybe Union City style gaming would be good for people that have lots of time to spare, but for people that are very busy and normally only have a couple of hours a day to spare if they decide to sleep that day, this game is perfect. So much fun I have already had with this game and plenty more to come.

I too dislike the micro transactions that are the norm with Facebook games. It makes me feel like I'll never get the entire experience unless I not only pay, but continue to pay into the indefinite future. I think it's fairly proven at this point that people would rather pay a one time cost of entry and get the whole shebang. Also, having to wait hours to progress is pretty transparent as a marketing tactic, and more importantly frustrating to the player.

That stuff being said, this installation IS different from any other Facebook game that's out there, in every way other than I stated above. It still is definitely a Last Stand game, stays true to the atmosphere and style, as well as the loot and stat balancing. The shift to 3d is fantastic. Bravo to your programmers, artists and designers.

I'm not sure what to expect or what your plans are as far as narrative goes. Is there even going to be one? If the story in the tutorial was all you planned on implementing, this thing is already dead in the water. Is there an end to the game? Is it something you can beat or just play until you get bored of boosting your defenses?

There also is the issue of Facebook and it's security problems, leading many people to disallow apps altogether. This game is actually the only one that I've permitted since learning of Facebook's dodgy and cryptic privacy policies. There is also the issue of limiting your player base to Facebook users, although I suppose this point is rather moot as that group is enormous. For now. Personally I don't think Facebook games are good platform anymore, as when things like Farmville were in their heyday. I doubt you'd get many more players on Facebook as you would on a flash games site, eg: Kongregate.

All in all it's shaping up to be a great game, but I'm dreading the attachment to Facebook. I say that though as a player, not a guy trying to feed his family. I will still certainly play and you'll have some of my money in your pocket, but if it turns out the way I suspect it will if this approach is taken, I'll undoubtedly be left disappointed.
