Will defending food and water become the trend here?

A little story for you guys.
I lost my protection around the time I went to sleep last night. I was fifteen food away from getting my seventh (hopefully finally a female) survivor.
When I got on not an hour ago, I discovered that I've been raided twice. And my food and water supplies have been set back two-three real life days worth of searching. And, all six survivors I've placed to defend the food and water have been injured. I am just sad now.

Is this game going to be like Kingdoms of Camelot that raiding other players for resources becomes the normal method for gaining anything? I mean, the potential yields of raiding another player is far greater than searching zombie-infested places in terms of gained resources/minute of return time. Gear is a different argument, I'm only speaking of food and water here.

And the PvP would become a matter of besieging the other player with long range rifles. Five attackers with those fancy rifles could potentially tear apart any defense, since my AR wielding fighters weren't able to stop them despite camping behind the doors.

Sorry for complaining here. It's still an awesome game, except for the chance of being raided. I'm just really frustrated with the loss of my food and water. And, I realized that some games have PvP that hurts you when you lose.

    I really don't want to see this becoming a theme here. I have only had my food out of the red twice, and I do not want to loose it all to some high-spending brute. I also dislike this theme because I just can't do that to a total stranger. I'd like to see something to keep the peaceful players like me safe from raiding.

    It is just as soo many other games, raiding for ressies from another player is usually always more benefitial then raiding the suburbs.. unfortunatly..
    I really hope some sort of alliances can be formed so that if you get attacked, the allies you have immidiatly move out to hlp you, or you can assign certain ppl in your crew to hlp out your fellow allies..

    I myself havent experienced ANYONE in the "world" I am currently on that has attacked anyone else... we all got 0 battles, which I find really good, cuz the ppl can build up and actually have fun.. I myself would not attack others even though I know I could win lots of em battles, simply because I think ppl should have the chance to learn the game first and get bigger.. hopefully some sort of work will be done here..

    Hah. yeah raiding is funny because it's like beating nerds to pulp no offence Lews. but when i raid i raid some of his/her resources and left a little bit because i have mercy too. and i dont kill, i kill accidentaly i only distract survivors away from their homes and raid it.but Lews if you want to survive during the silent raid i have few tips fo you: deploy the strongest survivors at the most important storages not the weak ,Get more better weapons like going to gun stores,or securities etc.

  • I shoot to kill ;), I'd rather be able to fight folk who were online but as Con has stated there were too many issues with that.

    Lews what's your IGN? If it was me then I'll leave you be.

    And you're right with the long range weapons, I've just been using my leader with a M-24 and polarized glasses when I've been raiding compounds and not had much of a challange. Add to that the AI not yet being great.

    Think carefully about the layout of your compound, I'd keep my storage inside with rally points set so all survivors have line of sight out the doors. Don't equip melee either, they're just easy kills. Also try and keep some survivors back to defend when your offline, the majority of compounds I've raided (maybe 70%) have had no defenders.

    I agree with Tom, go hit up the high level areas for better weapons, I don't see much point in getting any fuel weapons, you can find better scavenging. I've had better luck on streets than gun stores etc in terms of finding good weapons. Have a look at https://getsatisfaction.com/deadzone/... for some posts on where some of us have found our better weapons. Personally I scavenge the high level streets etc for weapons and gear and lower level hardware stores, warehouses etc for resources. You can, and usually do, get more resources scavenging than raiding.

    @Makoshark55 How come your not finding enough food and water? I pretty much always have an excess, so a lot of what I find is wasted. That's also why I haven't really been taking food and water from other players. No point in taking what I don't need.

    By and large though, I think Con, Steve and Lisa have done a good job in terms of balancing PvP, you can't lose everything, none of your survivors die... I've played games where months, if not years of work could be lost overnight. Actually, there's maybe a wee theses there. The game in question had a complex system of alliances that the developers hadn't planned on, and politics became a crucial, if unintended, part of the game.

    And remember we're beta testing after all, so the more things we do the more bugs can be found and ironed out before full release and that includes PvP I'm afraid.

  • I’m really worried.
    My compound protection will disappear after 16 hours. I'm afraid that I might lose a lot of my resources (including food and water). I believe its unfair for players to attack offline players, survivor AI's can't match the strategy used by players. They're just sitting targets there!

    I hope the admins could extend the compound protection as they work on this problem!

    I can see where this trend is going. I love this game but if it ends up where i get raided every time i walk away from the game i'm just going to stop playing. This is where i'm a little sad that con went with this "open world" mmo style play. Any time that you have to pay to keep yourself safe just seems foolish. If it gets to the point where i can't advance because people higher level than me keep crushing me down i'm just going to stop playing and wait for the next last stand game that will hopefully not allow inter-player combat.

    They can't raid what you do not have. I am constantly using all the resources I gather to build and/or upgrade. There really isn't anything to raid in my compound when I am offline.

    • My protection ran out 24 hours ago. So in 5 days i went from level 1 to 16 and 9 survivors. Its possible. You just need to grind gun maps to get good weapons. Then grind resource maps to build your stuff. Then you sit back and relax. Once you hit 15 the game is over, no one will be able to steal A LOT from you.
    • See, I know those things are POSSIBLE. Nobody's worrying about people who are good at the game. I'm talking about protecting casual players who don't really know how it works. They should still be able to play and have fun.

  • 3 out of my 9 survivors have the sports rifle with a range boost AND equipment that gives 10% Acc and range. So that means 21+2.1 (23.1) and 85.85 acc (94.435) i would LOVE to see the brave soul smart enough to invade my compound. INSTANT DEATH that covers 90% of my compound. The other 10% is covered with m4 (15 range) ... :) <3

  • It's all very well for people to say they're badass enough to turn away raids, but not everyone is. Being still under protection, I didn't even realize you could steal things when raiding--I assumed the attackers gained stuff so they /felt/ like they were stealing, I didn't realize that the defenders actually /lost/ it. That just seems vicious and not at all fun.

  • Bullies are going to ruin a lot of people's fun, they should be able to opt out from being attacked by vicious fuel purchasing, not to mention vast competition.

    1. Barricades would have effects on defending party.
    2. Bloody medics would heal automatically.
    3. Market so people can trade resources.

    • Yes, I agree. Definitely some upgrades will solve that problem, and I can imagine Con is up to change those things for the final release.
      Sorry to all guys which are crying for mummy, its just an unfinished game.
      So this was my raiding-experience:
      I don't wanted to hurt anyone or steal something, because scavenging is the best way of getting those bloody resources and in fact herc is the real enemy. Where are those guys anyway?
      I was just curious about the gun to gun battle and stormed a neighboring compound with the best two fighters I had.
      After slaughtering those helpless defenders, I robbed everything I could get.
      But there was just wood, cloth, metall, food, water.
      So I asked myself: Am I stupid, I need better weapons. And those defenders had good weapons, because despite the slaughter it was a tough fight.
      For myself I came to the conclusion, raiding isn't really interesting if you are in need of stuff. But gun to gun battle would be an interesting experience again.

    This was the problem I was pretty sure was gonna happen. Elite players raiding the shit out of new players and putting them off the game forever. You let that carry on, this game's gonna carry a whole lot of stigma for anyone new who wants to start playing.

    You can get much more loot out of Mission
    The only purpose for Raiding ist to quickly get some Food and water which else have to wait maybe double the time with missions...

    There is a level restriction on raiding. You can't raid people that are less than 5 levels lower than you, so you won't be 'picked on' be elite players. PvP battles only occur between Facebook friends or similar leveled players.

    We're continually working to make the PvP better, so just hold tight guys. The defending teams will progressively get better with each update as we improve the AI and combat systems.

    • In my experience so far, I've been assaulted only by players far below my level, close to half in some cases. Now I can't fight back because of the restriction. I can understand you're trying to protect those who are starting out, but how about letting the higher leveled players be able to retaliate the ones who raided them in the first place?

      And another tip to make sure nobody takes your resources. After you raid them.

      After raiding, drain all your resources, so, when your victim comes to take revenge, they will find that there is no resource to loot. Way to piss that person off.

  • Still getting raided. Apparently, I'm the favorite target of some fellow named Daniel Moningka. I really wish there was some way of preventing this sort of behaviour. I can't really get Facebook credits to purchase protection with, since I don't have a credit card.

    • No worries. We all need something from each other, don't we? Maybe once the trading system comes into play, I can offload some nails to you.

      In other news, I've reorganized my layout. Left my production buildings in the bottom corner, closest to the raiding safe area, hopefully that will be sufficient enough to deter looters.
    • Just barricade your survivors with resources. Every time that person is trying to take your resources, they will always have to face you in combat, which seems to be your biggest problem.

      Worked for me, anyhow.

  • was blissfully unaware of the problem, as everyone at my place is at 0:0, even salvaged some high level m24 since i deemed them unnecessary, and had all my storage neatly lined up at the edge of the compound, moving it in now
    guess i'll be saving the rest of m24 that i find (i have one lvl 20 left though ;p)

    I raid. And here are some tips that I have used to protect myself from people like me.

    Make a Barricade out of RESOURCE CONTAINERS! If your enemies are trying to get something out of you, they are going to be hurt. REAL BAD. So, even if all your survivors get incapacitated, your enemies will ALL suffer. Terribly.

    Also, make all your survivors use hunter compacts/ sportspot rifles, or any long range weaponry you have. 1 would not make any difference, but 5 of them definitely are.

  • I've been raided once (I did 2 revenge raids just to let know that it's not worth messing with me) and i got the message 'compound defended' and the picture of happy survivors coming home from a mission not the one, where they somehow manage to limp home (someone's been injured). Even with all those good sings indicating that nothing had gone wrong ( for me) I lost a lot in the security rating.
    I am certainly not a raider, I prefer to loot high-level zombie-infested places (gains more xp). Just I got the fear that the next time someone raids me, I might not do that well although I am well-defended and my survivors have good equipment.
    I think that maybe the player could add a message (that would be viewable to all the playes within the world) that would indicate wether the palyer is aggressive or friendly or etc. The message should be player-written, not given by the game, this would make it easier for the players to express their mood. E.g "I am friendly, but will retaliate, if attacked" not just "friendly" or "aggressive".

  • For base defense and raiding, there is only one stat which is of any importance. Range. Place your suvivors behind some sensible barricade layout, give them the longest ranged guns you can find and +% range gear. Use watchtowers - they give range bonuses to survivors inside them.

    Between a piece of gear with 10% range and 20% accuracy or whatever stat and a piece of gear with 12% range, always use the one with the most range.

    People who are not in range do 0 DPS. I enjoy raiding people who are not armed with M24 + glasses. Then they try to retaliate and get mown down.
