Just highlight the Smart Shelf and hit Delete... nothing simpler.

This is NOT working. Same as not being able to remove iTunes. How to make this WORK?

Hi Eric,

Try highlighting the shelf you'd like to delete and selecting Edit > Delete Shelf in the menu bar. Hopefully that will get rid of it for you!
