Details Sidebar DL 3 and other DL 3 qurks

This is a library program, where is the Details Sidebar in DL 3? Missing fields include composer and conductor for films. Why is the detail field text so small and seemingly unable to be resized?

  • The sidebar no longer exists.

To resize the details window, click on some some whitespace inside it and drag it away from its normal position.

    It can then be resized.

Note: each window you do this for is unique for that item, and the window cannot be reused. so its very poor when you want to make different edit on many items sequentially.

This is a disaster for me. I am going to go back to using v2. Hopefully the developers will realize that making a change just to have a change isn't always the best thing to do.

I think the idea was to make the app more iOS like, and you can see the influences, however there are too many decisions like this that just don't work for me and many other people.

DL2 was the result of years of tweaking with some missteps along the way ( sidebar to bottom bar and back to sidebar) and for me the sidebar in DL3 is a waste of space. I don't need to know this info all the time, it's useful to see it but even then, the information you need to see isn't there. Scanned EAN, NOPE. Big image yup.

The scan window is too small, and it's pretty impossible to scan some cd barcodes (1/4" by 1") without making the sidebar huge... making the big scan history area even a bigger waste of space. The whole of the right hand sidebar can and should be replaced with a decent details view, and have a new modal scan and scan config/history window.

It may not be revolutionary, it's evolutionary but it's been proven that's what DL users want as it provides the most flexibility for editing purposes.

I could easily see the right sidebar being multi-purposed for both the new info that's there now and the old details inspector information. Just give us a way to switch between the two. Tabbed, maybe? Or just a toggle in the footer bar or something.

And/or add a separate floating inspector for items that changes based upon what's selected. It should work like the Finder does. Cmd-I gives you an info inspector on a single item (or the spacebar like it does now) Cmd+Option+I (or maybe Cmd-Spacebar) gives you a contextual Inspector that changes based upon what's selected.

It's odd to me that after the uproar over moving the sidebar to the bottom and back again that it was ever considered a good idea to over-tinker with that functionality.

If it works, you should have a REALLY good reason for "fixing" it.

I really like the idea of a tabbed right sidebar. The current information shown in DL3 is of no use to me, and clicking on each item and having the pop-up window with the details information is a huge step backward in my opinion.

I've already gone back to DL2 - and will patiently wait for the fix to DL3 to make it useful again.

I agree, the decision to remove the details sidebar was wrong. In fact I don't understand why anyone would have thought it was right to begin with.

I don't like double-clicking or right-clicking to see the details of my item, especially when double-clicking often tells it I want to "edit" the title or creator field, making them editable. Popups are annoying to users. This was not a good choice.

The improvements I was most looking forward to are not found: such as the ability to search my web-published library.

In our latest version (just released! Download from our website if you purchased on the app store) 3.1, you can place the Details box in one spot and set it to your preferred size and it will remain there. You can also open details menu with a simple Command + I. This should function just as well as built in tool bar.

    What do you guys think?

    • Destrodelphia, please write to support@delicious-monster.com and I'll initiate a refund for your DL3 key. We're still actively developing and supporting DL2, so you wouldn't be reverting to an orphaned app. I'm sorry you're so unhappy with the changes.

After working here for a couple of months, I've come to realize that there are two distinct types of DL users. There are those who find DL3 a massive improvement because they make use of the charts, smarter smart shelves, customizable sorts, etc. Then there are those who don't use those features and enjoyed the more straightforward UI of DL2.

We offer free downloads for both apps, and specifically advise people to try before they buy:

      http://www.delicious-monster.com/get/

... because there's no way we can tell what kind of experience an individual will find best suits their tastes and purposes. Anyway, I apologize again that you've been frustrated by the new interface. I switch between v2 and v3 all day and sometimes I, too, have that "But this isn't SUPPOSED to work that way," feeling when making the leap from one to the other. They're two different experiences.
    • Kim, I think that there's also another sort of user: one who appreciates the new features of DL3 but who misses the lost functionality of DL2. We are exasperated because it's so close to being a truly excellent app with the return of the sidebar. Is there a compelling reason why it can't be returned to DL3.

    Greetings,

I just downloaded DL3 as a trial moving up from DL2. I totally agree with the above comments. The absence of a details sidebar is a big step backwards. I have DL2 still on the computer and I am going back to that and hope there is an adjustment. I think the idea of tabs offering a choice on the right sidebar is excellent. I spend more time on the details of an item in my collection that I do on when it was added.

I'll add my voice to the choir. I just got a new iMac, I am looking at updating to DL3...and instead of the 3 panel view, with the details panel, which is the important part of the program... there's some pop up?

I have a hard time even understanding the thought process that went into this design choice. This is a database program, and the view of the entries is relegated to some pop up?

After the strum and dang with DL2 and the 3 panel view, how did someone think "THAT'S what needs to change!"?

Modern Macs are all widescreen...so you make a square program rather than taking advantage of the space?

I understand, the scanning is way improved in DL3, I haven't tested import from file. I worked out how to share DL3 across dropbox and will update my thread on that soon....but getting data INTO DL3 is only half of the point of a library program...using that data is the other.

I've just attempted to add my first book (with detail) into DL3 after years of using previous versions. Can it really be that there is no place for Dewey Decimal numbers in 'Details'?

I'll need to migrate back to DL2, but will watch for improvements like those suggested on this thread.

  • There IS a place for Dewey Decimal, but since it starts out blank you won't see it unless you are in Edit mode (click the tiny pencil/paper icon). It is near the bottom if the Details section.

" think the idea was to make the app more iOS like,"

The Delicious Library team, in all of it's iterations, has always been one of the best Mac developers in the biz. It's a shame they bought in to Apple's BS about iOSification and forgotten that a computer is not a tablet or a smart phone.

Look at the screenshots attached...which makes better use of a modern imac screen?

I'm a previous user of DL2, and was looking forward to downloading DL3 when I finally got a new MacBook that could run Mountain Lion.

Thankfully, I read some of the above comments before splashing out on DL3, and decided to try the trial version first. I have to say, I am unwilling to spend a significant amount of money on this version until some of the issues above have been addressed.

Not having a details sidebar is a real back-step. I have tried moving the floating information box and resizing it, which is all well and good (you can make it almost look like a sidebar, and it stays the same size when you click a different item) but when you close it, it loses the position and dimensions.

Rather than removing functionality, I was looking forward to new features in addition to those already present in DL2. In particular, I had stopped using DL2 in favour of web-based solutions like GoodReads, because of increased social/sharing options, cloud-based library, and iPhone app scanner. Only the latter has been added in DL3; I would like to see at least a sync option between devices added before considering DL3 to be a whole-number upgrade rather than an update to DL2.

Finally, I appreciate the need for an existing book database against which to compare barcodes, but Amazon seems to be putting a lot of restrictions on the development of Delicious Library. Are there no alternatives - or could there not be multiple sources available within the app? I was going to suggest GoodReads as a possible source, but I think it may be owned by Amazon! How about Feedbooks?

This app has so much potential - and, unlikely most others, I would be very happy to hand over the best part of £20 for it - if only it were a true upgrade on DL2. Fix the details sidebar, add in sync capabilities, and with the new iPhone scanner function, I'll be another very happy customer.

EDIT: One other gripe: tying 'Title' and 'Author' together as one category for sorting - those are very definitely different categories - why are you taking control away from the user?!

    • Thanks for both of those fixes - that has got over both of my gripes with the existing design. I suppose the rest of my rant was really about features that I had been hoping for but which have failed to appear. I guess I should go and add my two cents to the 'Ideas under consideration' forum, instead of hoping they'll read my mind!
    • I have developed a work around regarding the details pane. I resized the main screen so that it occupies most of the screen. Then I opened the details pane and resized it so that it vertically occupies the entire far right side. While this reduces the main screen somewhat, it has the benefit of keeping the details pane always open and visible. When the program is closed and then reopened the window positions are retained.

I agree with the comments above--I finally upgraded to Mavericks on my Mac and promptly downloaded the trial version of DL3 but I know I won't be keeping it. Without the ability to see item details in the 3-panel view (and to click on those headers to sort by x) this is not an advance, it's a retroversion.

I spent a fair amount of time entering relevant categories (or fixing categories suggested by Amazon/DL) for my items, I find them very useful, and I'm not willing to give up that functionality.

Still hoping for a more stable, faster version of DL2 that does NOT leave out the important features like sorting and viewing details (apart from the detail window), but I won't be purchasing DL3 since I can't see any improvements of interest to me.

  • I've given up on Delicious Library every getting this app to work the way it should.
I've moved on to My Movies Pro. The Mac app and the iPhone app work exactly how DL should have worked. They don't do everything DL does, but the main thing for me is being able to scan with my iPhone, sync with my Mac, and have my media list with me updated and always.
