I’m frustrated.

DL3 Doesn't Import All Artwork from iTunes?

I downloaded (and purchased) last night just because I've historically liked the app and want to support it. I was bummed when the iOS app was discontinued because of issues with Amazon, but still retained DL2 on my system. However, I'd pretty much stopped stopped using DL2 when I stopped purchasing DVDs. I've switched over to downloading movies from iTunes, so I needed for DL3 to pull those records in from iTunes on my iMac (new iMac, 10.8.3, 24GB RAM, iTunes 11.0.2)

The problem is that DL3 pulls my movies, iBooks, audiobooks, and the like from iTunes, but fails importing it's associated artwork, which is pretty much the whole point of using DL3 for its beautiful graphical interface. Of over 1300 iTunes records pulled into DL3 from iTunes, only FIVE pulled associated artwork.

I'd like to diagnose the issue, but I can't find anywhere within DL3 to identify/change the iTunes library it's importing.

Is anyone else having this issue, or can suggest how I might proceed to try to fix the issue? Delicious Monster is a pretty small business, so I'm not hopeful of a timely response from them, but before writing off DL3 as a flawed project forever I'd like to at least try to make it functional with my iTunes data.

I should note all the DL2 stuff imported just fine with its associated artwork, so the problem resides in its link to iTunes. Unfortunately, all the legacy stuff from DL2 is now pretty much static, so my digital content future is with iTunes and other digitally downloaded stuff that's imported into iTunes.

  • I found the source DL3 data in ~/Library/Containers/ and deleted it. This permitted a reinstall of the app and rebuilding of its data.

After doing that I confirmed the location of my iTunes master library and let it run. It pulled in all my iBooks and iBooks artwork fine. It only pulled in five of my 700+ movie's artwork, none of my audiobooks, or music, or TV Shows artwork, although it did pull in the records.

So, I'm at an impasse. It would be helpful if others would confirm or deny this is an issue for them.

    Thanks for listening...

  • I just confirmed that my old DL2 v2.7 is dynamically importing all my data from iTunes, including the artwork, just fine. So, something's amiss with DL3 for me.

  • i'm not seeing any artwork and it appears that only music and movies are being imported without graphics. No ibooks at all.

Thanks for the reply, Lisa. I guess I'll have to wait for Delicious Monster now to see what they say.

  • I’m annoyed.
Delicious Monster just replied to me that I'd have to manually import the 1,300+ images from DL2/iTunes into DL3 to make it functional. They claim there's a bug in iTunes preventing third party apps from importing the artwork, which doesn't quite ring true, since five recent additions to iTunes did import the artwork just fine.

So, in a nutshell, anyone hoping to pull all their data/artwork in from iTunes should try before they buy. I'll be keeping DL2 around, which has all my old PLUS new iTunes artwork. DL3 is UNUSABLE for me in its present iteration. Icons without text in a visual database is useless.

  • A 3.0.1 update came out this evening that adds text to generic icons, so you can now see the names of your records, which is an improvement.

I also noted that my iBooks artwork, except for PDF files, did pull in successfully, so it still appears to me the problem is in DL3, not iTunes.

  • I’m hopeful
When connecting DM3 with my iTunes library (iTunes turned on) only the images of the e-Books and films show but non of the music covers. How can this be solved.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled
no music iTunes images are shown in DM3.

  • That's exactly what I have observed. DL3 brings in all the iTunes records, but omits the artwork on everything but purchased iBooks (it doesn't matter the source of the ebooks in iTunes, whether from the iBookstore or from another non-Apple source) and recently purchased movies. So, PDFs I've added to iBooks (such as my car's owner's manual) also are missing their artwork. The question is, what is different about the artwork for recently purchased movies from iTunes and older purchased movies from iTunes, and of course artwork added manually for ripped DVD movies? It's also not pulling in any other artwork for other categories, such as music and TV shows.

Delicious Monster simply advised me to manually re-add the artwork for my missing 1,300+ records, which of course I'm not going to do. DL2 shows all my records and my artwork, and continues to dynamically read in new records from iTunes (with their artwork).

I see that you're seeing some artwork for films (movies?) pulled in from iTunes. Are these recent films you've purchased? Or, did it pull in all your film artwork from a year or more back?

Thanks for posting. Delicious Monster knows they have a problem because they pushed out a 3.0.1 update yesterday that now displays the record's name on the shelf over the generic icon. But, they insist this is an Apple bug that they're trying to work around.

  • I’m relieved.
I just received some help from Allison at Delicious Monster and she provided me with a new beta to try, and advised me to accept the default location for the iTunes Media that DL3 finds when it searches the system.

I had moved my iTunes Media files off my iMac's hard drive to a Thunderbolt RAID array, and placed all the media folders iTunes uses at the root of this volume. Unfortunately, the name of this volume is not iTunes Media, but something else to identify it's part of this iMac's particular configuration, and the path DL3 expects to find to the iTunes Media files is now different. So, DL3 could find the records when I forced it to use the RAID array, but not the artwork. Fortunately, I also have a backup volume of the iTunes Media attached to this iMac, and it's called iTunes Media Backup. DL3 found this location and when I permitted DL3 to use it, instead of the RAID array master records, it pulled everything in fine. So, let DL3 use the iTunes records it finds, or make sure DL3 is pointing to a root location that begins with iTunes Media as its name.

All my artwork has now imported properly, so this issue is closed.

Now, if they would just let shelf icon size adjustments be remembered between restarts, and TV Shows to identify the individual shows for a particular series (as DL2 does), I'd be set.

  • Can anyone confirm this issue, for items with custom artwork in iTunes, that DL2 shows the artwork but DL3 does not.

    example

The URL is the link to the custom artwork, and not the link to the file within iTunes.

Anyone with missing artwork, can you see if this is the same issue?

  • I’m sad
Well, It looks like this problem has been around for a few months with no resolve. Just bought the app yesterday and I'm having the same problem. Sad, lets hope it's fixed or this will be my last support of the product.

  • All my CDs that have custom artwork show in DL3 in both List and Cover mode. In DL2 they show in Covers mode, but no images at all show in List mode in DL2 (be they custom or regular source).

The only Cover Artwork from iTunes giving me trouble in DL3 is my iBooks (which were not shown in DL2, so I can't compare).

  • Hi All,

This is really an Apple issue. They control how other apps access the art in iTunes so we can't do much about whether your art will show up or not. We have reason to believe this will be fixed in the future but can't say for sure.

  • As I said above, my artwork import issue was resolved when I let DL3 find the iTunes Media library and to use it. DL3 only failed to import my artwork when I tried to point it to a particular path which was not the default iTunes Media location. DL3 expects a particular path, which must be hard coded within the app for particular categories of content. If the location of each iTunes Media category matches the expected path, all is well. If not, the artwork isn't found.
    • This is true. We do have a specific place to look for iTunes items. Unfortunately some people's art will not show up when DL3 is looking in that place due to Apple restrictions.
    • My point is that there's nothing special about my over 1,300 ebooks (iBooks & epubs), music, home videos, movies, or audiobooks artwork, and DL3 pulls the artwork in just fine when it stays in the default location. What restrictions are you saying Apple is applying which only affect some people? The only artwork DL3 won't display for me are the self-generated first pages artwork iOS creates for PDFs. That suggests to me that Apple is NOT holding up restrictions for these types of standard artwork and that Delicious Monster has a bit more work to do to find out why some people are having an issue. Blaming this particular issue on Apple is not a solution for these people.

P.S., I upgraded to version 3.1.2 today and can now double click on a TV Show and see all the episodes. Yay! Unfortunately, I still cannot double click on an audiobook to see the chapter tracks. And, I'd still like to see the DL2 legacy code for syncing with the deprecated iPhone app put back in so I could retire my DL2 app for good.
