DVD's in binder, throw out covers?

I have 600 DVD's in their jewel cases taking up tons of room in my closet. I want my closet back! what are people doing with those cases?? I am getting ready to use delicious library, and put the DVD ONLY (not the case) binders. Ideas? What about the DVD's with a tiny title you can't read? use a magic marker? what are some clever ideas out there?

  • Being the media packrat I am, I like to keep everything. One of the pluses to keeping the case is that you can easily check stuff in and out of DL2 with a scan of the barcode.

However, if you're intent on getting rid of your poor cases, ask around. Sometimes people buy a caseless disc cheap somewhere, then wish they had a proper case. The chances of you happening to have exactly the case they need are quite low, but...they could also just use them as cases. Like if someone made a wedding DVD or something they wanted to distrib. Take out the inserts and presto, a set of cases, cheap!

As for the case binder thing and small titles, I'd recommend making smart shelves to correspond with each binder / binder section (put that in the location field), that way you could at least easily narrow down roughly where the disc is. As you could guess, I'm not partial to writing on a DVD with a marker!

(If you do write on a DVD, I've been told you should use special DVD markers since regular markers might interact with DVDs in unwanted ways. Whether this is true or not, I don't know.)

Fred: I see your point about keeping the cases. Also, if I ever want to sell them I can put them in the case. I might put the cases in the attic till then. BUT, I didn't even think checking things out and in, with the barcode...I completely missed this in the 'help'. is there a tutorial where I can find out about this, and other things?

Ah, er, this isn't covered in the help and there's no tutorial.

    Video checkout works thusly:
    1) (Add and) select the friend who is borrowing stuff.
    2) Scan the item to be checked out.
    3) Voila, the item is dimmed out in your main library and appears on their shelf.

    Video checkin works thusly:
    1) Scan the item to be checked in.
    2) Voila, the item is back in your main library and disappears from their shelf.
