Going back to DL2 from DL3 feels like an upgrade ... ;-(

Hi!

After a few days and beginning to really use DL3, I'm going back to using DL2 instead. And I'm very sorry to report, that it feels like an upgrade ... ;-(

Until now, there are three things that make DL2 superior over DL3 (at least for me):

1. Details Sidebar: The information to items are far better and faster accessible. And thats what I want from a Database of my movies, books, cds, etc.
Look here for details:
https://getsatisfaction.com/delicious...
https://getsatisfaction.com/delicious...

2. List View: To see more items at a glance, more than 2,5x at the same window height!
Look here for details:
https://getsatisfaction.com/delicious...

3. DL3 forgets window size, position and view setting on new start.
It is frustrating to adjust the window and the settings every time you start DL3.
Look here for details:
https://getsatisfaction.com/delicious...

The only advantage from DL3 above DL2 (for me at the moment) is the iPhone Scanning app. But the app iWebcamera works too for scanning with the iPhone, so I didn't loose functionality. It's not as good as the Scanning app, but It works.
And the Charts View is nice to have, but not so important for me.

I hope, that DL3 grows and bring that functionality of these three points back, because they are a deal breaker for me. And DL3 might look nice, to have to choose over more wood types, to have an 3D effect when pointing with the mouse in bookshelf view. But the look is not the main part, why I use DL. It's the functionality. And with DL3 it was a great fall or a great step backwards for me. A real big downgrade.

And so I find myself liking DL2 much more. :-)
But still I hope that DL3 might one day be as good as DL2 and the money I spend don't feel so wasted as at this moment. ;-)

Greetings from Germany,
Matthias B.

I agree – DL2 suits my needs so much better than DL3. I prefer the presence of the details sidebar, and I want to be able to show any detail I want in the list view, so I can sort by, say, location, or any other detail I choose. I also miss the built-in standard media types lists, so I can see all my videogames, or all my books, etc. Going back to DL2.

I see no benefit upgrading to DL3. My impression is that the developers just want to make money. I bought DL1 (twice) and DL2, why should I spend more money for DL3? At least the developers could give existing users a token discount to acknowledge their loyalty and incentivize upgrading.

Add to the list of major fails in this version is the fact that DL3 no longer syncs loans to the calendar, DL 2 still does.

I have to agree here. I really don't understand the point of DL3 and wish I hadn't wasted my money on it.

Virtually everything about DL2 is better than DL3. I can't think of one reason why DL3 would be a better program to use.

I'm going back to DL2 and will export to DL3 when it's been improved.

This post has been very helpful, I don't see the point of having to invest 25 dollars more for an upgrade that will give me just the same as the previous one. When they make radical changes/upgrades I'll probably sign in... in the meantime I'll stick to my DL2.

I agree that some incentive/discount should be given to owners of DL1 and DL2... or do they assume we will pay for new versions every time they do an upgrade? Loyalty should be appreciate it.

I have to say, it is my favorite software and I appreciate the masterminds behind this. Thank you!

Another upgrade came out but all of my feedback has been ignored or rejected again. I'm annoyed at having purchased software that is less intuitive, less aesthetic, and with less features. But I don't want to ask for a refund yet because I'm still holding out hope that Delicious listens to its customers. Maybe if I post my feedback submissions here I can get others that agree to show that I'm not the only one that wants these features back?

    1) The inspector is bigger than the old sidebar in DL2, which means less screen space for the actual shelf.

    2) When I change the format to “unbordered” white areas are added to make the product a rectangle/square. In DL2 the white areas were detected and removed. They removed this algorithm so that they could do 3D, which a number of people have stated that this was a useless addition. I think it's especially useless if you're sacrificing what should be a basic function. Pics of what I'm talking about here: https://getsatisfaction.com/delicious...

    3) The Audience option has been reduced to one line. Other options like Edition, Genres, and Features still let you use multiple lines. I had multiple lines for the Audiences in DL2 because I entered rating descriptors. I've been told multiple times that this was a mistake, but it somehow keeps getting forgotten each update.

    4) The Books, Music, and Video Game shelves from the left side are gone. Now I have to click on Library then click on the small icon on the bottom. I don't understand why you can't have it on the left as well as the bottom. Or have the types down below outside of the Library -. as soon as I click on a shelf the types disappear. It was suggested I make Smart Shelves, which I have, but it's not the same. I don't understand why they were removed from the side. At the very least they could make it so you don't have to click on Library to get to the small icons at the bottom

    5) The bookshelf zoom bar is gone at the bottom (from DL2). DL3 adds an extra step to reach what was already in a convenient location. They say that they removed this because most people have a zoom on their mouse? I don't use a mouse. Then they said I can pinch with my trackpad, but that's less precise and my trackpad is sometimes unresponsive. I don't understand why it had to be removed.
    • Well, I finally had to go back to DL3. I upgraded my Mac OS X to El Capitan and DL2 is no longer being supported apparently. I'm disappointed to see that DL3 doesn't appear to have improved in the years since I've tried it.

      1) The details window is still bigger than the old sidebar in DL2, which means less screen space for the actual shelf. You still can't reduce the size very much.

      2) When I change the format to “unbordered” white areas are added to make the product a rectangle/square. In DL2 the white areas were detected and removed. They removed this algorithm so that they could do "3D". Pics of what I'm talking about here: https://d2r1vs3d9006ap.cloudfront.net...

      3) The Audience option still is restricted to one line. Other options like Edition, Genres, and Features still let you use multiple lines. I had multiple lines for the Audiences in DL2 because I entered rating descriptors. I've been told multiple times that this was a mistake, but it hasn't been fixed in years.

      4) The Books, Music, and Video Game shelves from the left side are still gone. You still have to click on Library, then click on the very small icon on the bottom. I don't understand why you can't have it on the left as well as the bottom. Or have them down below outside of the Library.

      5) Still no bookshelf zoom bar at the bottom.
    • Disappointed that the latest update still hasn't utilized any of my suggestions. I've been requesting them for over 3 years (by submitting them as tickets as well). The unbordered issue is my biggest gripe, it looks awful.

Get rid of the 3D effects for the bookshelf. Replace the details sidebar option on the right side of the screen. Add the shelf-zoom slider back into the main window. Basically, nearly EVERYTHING about DL2 is better than DL3. I wish I hadn't of spent my money on the upgrade. If you can integrate iphone/ipad app scanning for books into DL2, or revert DL3 to act like it's predecessor, then I might switch back to the current version -- but until then, I'm happier with DL2.

    • Andrew, I offered Destrodelphia a refund in another thread:

      https://getsatisfaction.com/delicious...

Since this is the thread where disappointed DL3 customers tend to congregate, I'd like to use this space to make a little public service announcement: Delicious Monster can only issue refunds to customers who purchase via delicious-monster.com... which isn't to say that you can't get your money back if you bought via the Mac App Store.

Purchases made through the App Store are handled and processed directly by Apple, and they're the ones who must issue the refund. Please view your purchase history using the instructions here:

      http://support.apple.com/kb/ht2727

Locate the transaction, then click 'Report a Problem'.

  • Are you really listening??? Most of us just want a better product, not our money back!
    • Yes, tlsterry, I'm really listening.

Destrodelphia is saying s/he is dissatisfied with most of the changes made in DL3. Delicious Monster has a few options here:

      1. Devote a great deal of developer time to undoing all the changes in order to make Destrophilia happy. This will also make users who enjoy the current UI/UX of DL3 unhappy. I know it seems like those who enjoy DL3 are as rare and/or fictitious as Yeti, but I hear from such people every day. Most of the folks who write the support alias about lost license keys include a sentence or two about how much they dig the app.

      2. Keep Destrophila's money while cackling over our ill-gotten gains like Batman villains.

      3. Suggest that because Destrophila finds DL2 a superior program, s/he should revert to using that; and, because we think it's unethical to keep the cost of an unused license key, offer Destrophilia his or her money back.

This is the second time I've been upbraided in the forums for offering a dissatisfied customer a refund instead of immediately setting our two (our only two) developers to work remaking the entire program to suit the preferences of a vocal minority. (A vocal minority who are served well by another of our products.)

This just isn't the way any industry works, though. If I hate almost all the aspects of my 2014 Toyota that were changed from the 2012 model, and take it back to the dealership, they don't dismantle the entire car and rebuild it to my specifications. They either tell me tough luck because they offered me a test drive and I didn't suss out these issues then; or (better) they offer to buy it back. Maybe they log my observations and use that input when they're working on future models.

DL3 is a free download: http://www.delicious-monster.com/get/ We give potential customers the opportunity to test-drive the app and see for themselves whether they like the improvements or, well, don't consider them improvements at all. That way there are no unpleasant surprises for Destrophilia and like-minded users. We can't stop people from buying before they try, but that's the reason that the Download link precedes the Buy link.

Every piece of feedback sent to the support alias goes into a project-management database. For example, if someone asks us to support tags, that gets added as a subcase under a "support tags" parent case. I'll sometimes open a case if someone has an issue in the forum but doesn't mail me, too. When a case gets big enough, action happens. That's how the Delicious Scanner iOS app came into being. I'm testing a beta that offers customizable detail fields, because this is an oft-requested feature.

I assure you that we're paying close attention and your voices are heard. I wish we could please everyone, but we can't -- and the only mechanism I have available to make things anywhere near right, and soon, is to offer a refund. Even when the company concurs that a change needs to be made, the implementation of that change can be months away.

(Finally, if there are any Yeti reading this, I apologize for speculating that you are fictitious. Give my regards to your furry family.)
    • Hilarious, and delicious! XD

    Hi Kim

Just wondering how many makes a (vocal) minority?

I understand design progress isn't always received by the majority as such - and it may just be my misunderstanding of what I read / notice - but even outside of this official forum/fora it seems that the please-bring-back-DL2 crowd is perhaps bigger than smaller?

Is a middle ground achievable - or is it all too far gone?

How can we as users, satisfied with DL2, help you progress / develop DL rather than simply complain about DL3?

Is it possible to identify, rank and prioritise any of what DL2 users seem to be complaining about for DL4?

Thanks to the team for a great product - even if we don't always agree about every aspect of what makes it so great.

    • As far as I'm concerned, there never *were* bugs in DL2.
    • See the Topic "DL2 - Blu rays and Amazon.de (Germany) doesn't work at all anymore" ...

Blu rays are my main thing, why I use DL2. And german Blu rays can't be scanned anymore. DL2 doesn't recognice them from Amazon anymore ...

Therefore DL (for my new Blu rays) isn't of any Use ... since over a year!
And until now, no fix in sight ...

      :-(

  • Hi All,

I am one of the users of DL who thinks that DL 3 stink. I don't remember exactly what made me so horrified. It was a long time ago and I only ever downloaded DL 3.0 but none of the updates. I reverted to DL 2 quicker than i could blink. As far as comparing the two versions I cannot help but remember the old saying; "If it's not broken don't fix it". Being an Australian the only thing that I would like to be added to DL 2 is the ability to select DVDs from Region 4 suppliers.

Having said all that I can only say that I agree wholeheartedly with Kim. If you don't like it don't use it. Simple, easy.

Kim, to use your car analogy, I think what many users are saying is "I loved the coupe and I was ready to move on to the SUV, but the SUV isn't very good. It lacks some of the features that made the coupe such a great product."

There might be some unrealistic people out there saying what you are saying in the analogy of course, but I think most sensible people aren't.

I bought DL3 without testing it as I figured since I loved DL2 I'll surely love DL3. Didn't work out that way. I'll keep it and will follow the update to see where it leads though.

I also "bought DL3 without testing it as I figured since I loved DL2 I'll surely love DL3." I requested and a received a refund (thank you), and uninstalled DL3.

I would love to have iOS scanning without the user interface changes that came with DL3. And maybe the DL3 database changes improve performance. Since I doubt DL2 will be enhanced in future, those are examples of why DL3 complainers would want DL3 DL2-ified.

Exactly. I already got this problem because DL2 can't get the Infos of Blu rays from Amazon.de (Germany) anymore. That means that unless DL2 happen to get a "repair" of this very important feature (soon?), it looses it's practiality.

Or is there a solution to this problem?

After reading the all the negative reviews on this site about DL3, I too spent good money to upgrade to DL3 after I upgraded my OS to Mavericks. Too say that I'm very sorry for doing this is a gross under statement. DL3 and those LITTLE pop out windows for information is terrible. I reinstalled DL2, but now I'm going with a competitors product which makes DL3 look life bad freeware. I'm not sure what user feedback DL developers were using when they hatched this version, but they completely missed the mark. DL2 was a great program, DL3 is a big step backwards.

    • Hello, Vernon --

The first link on the page used to purchase DL3 is a free demo.

      http://www.delicious-monster.com/get/

We're very transparent about what you're going to get -- we let you try our product before you buy it, and we put up this forum so you can read existing customers' opinions of the product, even if they're negative.

I'm not sure why you chose to bypass the demo and buy an app sight unseen after you'd read critical commentary about it. I checked our records, though, and since your purchase was made less than a month ago, I can refund the license. Please mail me at support@delicious-monster.com if you'd like that.

The feedback process we use is a ticketing system. When someone writes in with a suggestion, I move it into the proper project. If more than one person makes the same suggestion, I create a parent case and move those tickets into the parent case. If a case gathers enough weight (as with custom fields, which we added in v3.2), we implement the change.

Sometimes we also make UI changes to bring the product into line with Apple's current vibe, as with the clean, flat look of DL3.3.

Anyway, I really hate to see a customer so unhappy, and I'm sorry DL3 wasn't what you were hoping for. You might be pleased to hear that in v3.3 the popup window is movable and resizable! If you're running Yosemite now, you might want to update the app and give it another look before you ask for that refund.
    • I don't know why you'd only use the ticketing system. Not everyone submits tickets, but there are lots of similar complaints that people post on the forum. Why not take create tickets for issues that multiple users mention on the forums? I mean, I've created tickets for all of my complaints, that I know other people agreed with here, and literally all of them were ignored update after update. The ones I received responses for were you guys basically saying why you would be ignoring my feedback, because you're happy with DL3 the way it is. And some of these were genuine flaws. Even the flaws you admitted were flaws, you said you'd work on it, and update after update you never fixed them. Getting rid of intuitive features that made DL2 great just so you can have a more minimalist look like Apple's products was a mistake.

The popup window was movable and resizable in the DL3 I had as well, but to a limited degree, and with less text box space than DL2.

I'm still using DL2 after getting my refund, and I still love it!

Do you really think the user should have to turn on the shelf list; then open, resize, and position the info window after every restart!!!??? I AM NOT IMPRESSED.

  • I just tried Delicious Library 3 after using Delicious Library 2 for many years. I was completely disappointed so I thought I'd post here.

First of all, the interface is much more confusing than Delicious Library 2. With Delicious Library 2, all the features were pretty obvious; not so with version 3.

To me, Delicious Library 2 was almost perfect. I just wish it had a tags feature so I could tag my items by keywords such as cooking, reference, etc. Then I could search by tags or create Smart Shelves that were based on certain tags.

But it seems like Delicious Library 3 has been improved more for buying stuff than giving you more tools to manage your own inventory.

If I want to buy stuff on Amazon, I'll go to the Amazon website. I don't need a program to help me buy stuff. And Amazon's website already has a built-in suggestion feature.

Instead of allowing for a powerful feature like tags, Delicious Library 3 has added features for changing background colors and textures, something that I never felt the need for in version 2.

I also loved in Delicious Library 2 how I could increase and decrease the size of items in my shelf. I don't see a way to do that in version 3.

Plus, in version 2, I saw the details of each item in the right pane. With 3, the details of each item pop up in a little window, even when the right pane isn't showing anything at all.

I'm just happy Delicious Library 2 seems to work just fine under Yosemite. But it seems to me like version 3 was created by a totally different company.

The only way to keep it working was to avoid making the OS upgrades you have just made.

  • Just to clarify, I don't blame Delicious Monster for the incompatibility of the phone app, i'm looking for possible fixes or confirmation the bug is not fixable.

To be more precise, so far :

    - I succeeded syncing Yosemite/ DL2 with IoS 7.1.2 / DL phone app (on iphone 4s)
    - I upgraded my ipad to IOS 8.4 and lost the app functionality (can't access the database, app is unresponsive; only a screenshot), though it is seen in the network from DL2 on my mac
    - I downloaded the iphone app on my new 5S iphone (corporate, with some usage restrictions) upgraded to iOs 8.4. The phone app is recognized and authentified on the mac, but I can't sync the database. Worse, I can't even start a sample library.

So it seems that iOS 8 broke DL phone app. Can anyone confirm ?
