Is there ever going to be another iphone app?

Will you be coming out with another iphone app anytime in the future? I realize that Amazon has a say in the matter but still....

The existing html export is OK, but doesn't allow search of the library (just browse) and is weak on details. An iPhone app that allows search would help with larger libraries (I have approx 3000 items). Could the Amazon lookup be disabled on the old iPhone app to enable its return?

  • I believe that Amazon's dispute with the app was not that it could access the Amazon website while mobile, but that the information being carried around (and searched through) originally came from their site.

Upon reflection, this really makes no sense, because today I can carry my laptop or a notebook and access my full DL database through any WiFi hookup, even from inside a competitive bookstore's physical location. It may be a little less portable than an iPhone, but seems to be even more in violation of their premise of not carrying around their information. Go figure....

We still aren't allowed to have an app that has any data that even originally came from Amazon. What some people are doing is exporting their library to a spreadsheet, and then getting an app that can read spreadsheets for their phone. Not a good solution, I know, but it's something.

So granted, but I would really prefer to have the ability to have a standalone solution that syncs with the app.
I travel alot and buy books from bookstore especially when in the US or UK, I 'd rather not have to have roaming fees to go back to a web page.

any chance a revamping of the app that only synchs the inventory list (not the info pulled from amazon) could be envisaged?

    Cheers

PS: This is holding me back on purchasing the product

  • Can't you folks at least improve html export such that we get an author/creator index for faster browsing?

I also would love to have an standalone iphone app but at least a better more usable web interface would be really great.

  • Would it be possible for DL to switch to a non-Amazon data source? A lot of Amazon's metadata is terrible anyway, especially its data about authors and editors on older anthologies.

I would be happy to re-import all the metadata in my library from a different source if it would mean I could sync with a DL iPhone app.

I gather that there are several data sources out there; the most recently available is Google Books. I don't know whether the Google Book Search Data API provides as *much* metadata as you're getting from Amazon--but again, I would gladly forgo Amazon's metadata in favor of basic metadata from a source that can be used on the iPhone.

Looking for an alternate iPhone app -- argh. The Amazon agreement is overly restrictive -- here's hoping you're working to cut that ball & chain, but meanwhile I'll try some other products -- sorry. I've been enjoying DL on my Mac for a couple years, & hate the idea of switching.

At minimum, the Amazon agreement should make an exception for noncommercial, personal, private use of "their" data. I will not republish except to a few close friends, for noncommercial purposes. This should be "fair use" from a copyright perspective.

i bought this software almost exclusively for this option and feel that the webpage for delicious 2 is misleading. i HATE trying to publish to my mobile me as i find it's a crap list and there is no nice format to see all my library except to try to find it page by page and even there some are missing? IDK, but it's a bad system. i like the webcam scan, appreciate the info on my mac screen so thanks; but i hate flushing my money down the toilet buying doubles of items i already have when i THOUGHT i bought a product to use on my mac and see my library on my phone while away from home.
i live in a remote area and shopping is not easy to do and returns are even more difficult. i've been waiting for a workable solution for more than a year and am beginning to be discouraged. i personally don't care if my phone scans or not (it is a nice feature and idea though!) i just want a decent and clear and easy way to view my library when away from home. i still don't see why a simple text list can't be created by the app and then sync'ed to a new app for the iphone that we can see in alpha. order or search for by item name. no frills or images or prices needed just categories ie: books, dvd... and a black and white text list.
sorry for the vent but i'm very frustrated and feel misled as i said at the beginning.

The alternative that I've been looking at is Booxter. It has a Mac version that can import from DL2, and it can scan barcodes via the Mac camera, and it syncs with a (free) iPhone version. It's non-ideal in various ways, and it's certainly not as pretty as DL, but it does seem to work. I'm not clear on why they haven't been shut down by Amazon.

Apologies to the DL folks -- I'm sorry to be mentioning a competing product on your support page. But those of us who really need their catalogs to be on their iPhones may need to try alternatives at some point.

But I'm still hoping for some kind of native iPhone version of DL; that would be my preferred option.

Wish I had read these posts before I paid my cash over for DL. I love the barcode scanning with iSight, and the general attractiveness of the software, but without the export to iPhone this product has almost no use for me.
    • I agree with this, I just paid - today - and I feel like an idiot; the product and development are misleading. "Take it on your iPhone" = HOW? All I'm trying to do here is get my list onto the iPhone so that i don't double purchase and I can't even do that? WTF did I pay for, the right to bang my head on the desk once I looked deeper into the claims I could take my library on my iPhone?

If there are no plans for a new iPhone app, could you PLEASE remove the "iPhone export" from the main page? This is downright false advertising. Had I known you couldn't export to iPhone, I wouldn't have paid for a license.

I am extremely disappointed with this.

Well, it is not really matter of refund, is it? We all made an investment in this software because it is really cool and very easy to scan your library. My library has more than 900 items (~500 books, ~400 movies, and some game etc), I don't want to re-enter everything in yet another tool. I don't think most of us here wants an extremely polished app for iPhone/iPod, we just want a reasonable app that we can at least search through our library on our phones. I cannot browse through 900 items through either a single page with tons of images (bookshelf veiew) or 10 item in a page but without any descent index, that you have to sequentially go through your library.

DL2 clearly shows that you're capable of developing good software, you I think you just need to understand importance of this request and pay a little bit attention your user's need.

  • It is so frustrating to see people accusing Delicious Monster of not paying attention to their users' needs when it is Amazon that forced them to pull the application interface they had designed for the iPhone. Don't you get it? It is not that they don't WANT to... it is that Amazon won't LET them.

(BTW, catalyurek, if you think 900 items is a lot .... I have over 1700 books entered, & I'm not finished yet. Plus I have not started on the DVDs and CDs).

As for the other product mentioned in this thread I tested the trial version. It may have different export options, but the information it imported was sadly incomplete... plus, I scanned one book 4 times and got 4 different results!

I prefer to work with something that gives me a reasonably accurate foundation of information, even if I have to "massage" and add to it to get exactly what I want. DL2 may not be perfect, but it sure beats building a data base from scratch. And when I do find something "wrong" in the format or content of the information DL2 has provided, it generally traces back to the way the item for sale data was created inside Amazon.

  • In addition to posting here, I sent email to their help address; I got a response the other day that indicated that they're looking into alternative data sources. I hope that works out. (I'm not sure about the etiquette of passing that info along here; I'm sorry if that's not okay.)

Note to DL people: I think one thing that some of your users are finding frustrating is the lack of communication about this. As far as I can tell, you haven't responded to this public thread (and others like it) except to say that (1) Amazon doesn't allow an iPhone app, (2) there are clunky workarounds like exporting to HTML or exporting to a spreadsheet; and (3) you'll provide a refund to people who want one. Which makes it sound like there will never be an iPhone app, period, which leads people like me to give up on DL.

So I think a public note saying something like "We recognize that there's demand for this, we're sorry for the frustration, and we're looking into possible ways to provide an iPhone app" would go a long way toward mollifying those of us who've been hoping for an iPhone app ever since the last one got taken down.

Again, I say this as a loyal longtime fan of DL--I bought DL as soon as I heard about it, not long after it first came out, and I recommend it to friends (with a caveat about the iPhone situation), and I would love to keep using it.
