Legacy iOS app and Delicious Library 3

Will the old Delicious Monster iOS app sync with DL 3? (Just wondering before I upgrade--I like being able to carry a copy of the library on my phone so I don't accidentally buy a duplicate) . It's actually one of my favorite things about DL2.

Maybe the recommended way is to publish to a website and access it from mobile Safari ?
I don't know if the website export templates are "mobile friendly"?

(Anyway I still have 10.7 so I can't update to v3 yet, so I keep my precious iOS app!!)

  • Publish to a website is not a usable answer for me yet in DL3 as the images create a website of many GB and there is no easy way to search.

I agree. I love DL2 with the iPhone App. Having an easy to use portable library on the phone where I don't have to worry about whether I have cell coverage or wifi to connect is the most important reason for me to have the library. If I'm running a round and find a great price on a movie but don't remember if I have the title is a waste if I don't have that portable and easy searchable library.

  • Yes!.... and it should be in the DL3 scanner app so that you can scan while in the store.

Really, DL3 does not sync with the Legacy iPhone app? This will pretty much guarantee i will NOT be upgrading to the new version if this is true. Having a portable version of my Library IS the most important feature to me.

Can't the scanner app just contain a searchable list of titles and formats?

    What exactly are Amazon's restrictions?

Or how about an Web export template that's an HTML5 app that can cache the data in Safari?

  • I was all set to upgrade - one reason I stopped using DL2 was that I kept forgetting to scan my new book purchases, and so I have a pile of books sitting around waiting to be entered into the library, so the mobile device scanner was a huge plus, however, the MAIN reason I even purchased this in the first place was for the ability to carry around my library so I can see when I'm in a book store if I own a book, or where I'm at in a series of books! Hmmm....I guess I'll be keeping my $25 for now!

  • Trust me, we'd LOVE to have both iPhone and iPad apps, but unfortunately we've got some red tape to hurdle before that can happen.

Amazon won't allow anyone to use any of their data on any mobile device, which is really bad news (https://affiliate-program.amazon.com/..., §4e). This means that you won't see an app which allows you to take your collection with you, but we think the app we have for Library 3 which allows you to scan stuff into your desktop collection with your iPhone is pretty cool too.

If you would like to publish your library onto an iOS device, you might want to consider using a spreadsheet viewer for iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch. When you open up Delicious Library 3, go to the main menu and click on 'File > Export > Export to Another Application'. A window will pop up and give you the option to export your entire library, select shelves, or select items into a variety of different file types. If you choose to export your files to an Excel document, a .csv file will be created and can then be uploaded into your desired spreadsheet viewer.

Another option would be to purchase your own website and use FTP to publish from Delicious Library or publish for free using Dropbox. Instructions for the latter can be found on our blog here: http://blog.delicious-monster.com/201...

Sorry for any inconvenience, we are working on a way to get around this but it's easier said than done.

    • Hey Allison,
Why don't you team up with the people who made "my library" for the iPhone?
They clearly have an app that allows the same thing as Delicious library but not on the computer. They don't link prices or anything to amazon and also clearly don't have an issue with them. Please look into that.
We ALL want an app that works with our phones and the computer this would be a match made in heaven.
    • And also DL3 Is not cheap.. So i think we, as a user deserve better

  • There are other programs that still seem to have data on functioning iOS versions. The main distinction seems to be that they give the user the option to add multiple sources for their searches in addition to Amazon. The program I know of does not require that users add/implement those extra searches, but the fact that the program can access them seems to invalidate Amazon's claim that the information is exclusively "theirs" since basic info such as Title, Author (or Artist in the case of music), Format, Date, etc could easily come from any of the sources. Maybe if DL can add a few other search choices they can get out of the iOS headlock Amazon has on them.

BTW, publishing to the web is only good if you have good wifi access, which is not always available. Heck, some of us have trouble getting basic cell phone coverage sometimes.

Arrgh... I spent 10 minutes writing a reply and your stupid system just threw it away!! Here I go AGAIN....
    ------------
Amazon might be the biggest but they can't be the only game in town. There have to be other online merchants with an API you can hook into.

And personally, I don't need all of Amazon's "data" in a mobile app. I would hypothesize that must of us just use the "list" view and rarely go into the "detail" view which is really where all of Amazon' data lives. I would be happy with just the title, a thumbnail and user rating (from the main app). If you could pull the thumbnail from a non-Amazon source, you would be good to go. They can't say the title is "their" data because it isn't. Sure we could do as you suggest and export an Excel file but that's ugly and boring. We're Mac users, we want something cool and Mac-like (besides, we hate Micro$oft ;-)).

A lot of your user base will not upgrade, including myself, at the cost of losing the connection to the iPhone app. IMO, a stripped down version is better than no version at all.

    I'm just saying...

  • Per l.j.desjardins.nl's suggestion, I agree DL should wire up alternative data sources for the various media types and sync those to a mobile app.

Limelight just debuted to some fanfare on iOS using TheMovieDB which would work great for movies, and there are other viable options for Books and Music out there too.

Speaking of Limelight, why not consider partnering with them? Or someone else.

If Amazon's not going to allow it, DL's got to work around it.

I for one would be perfectly happy with an iOS app that simply listed the titles in my database, without the cover art, synopses, or other Amazon-supplied stuff. Though it wouldn't be as pretty, it would still have the information I most need on my iPhone, and Amazon couldn't complain about that.

Agreed. Pulling Amazon details into an iOS app isn't what I am seeking. In addition, I'm not married to having to have the data come from Amazon at all. If there are other games in town supplying this info, I'm all for it. Looking forward to the best that can be yet to come..,

  • Hi All,

We are currently working on templates and will have something a little simpler available that allows you to look at your library on a website or in Dropbox.

As things stand with Amazon, we can't use ANY information they have provided in an App which basically means we can't sync an app to your Mac based library as all of that information is provided through Amazon.

We are always on the look out for alternatives and other databases but right now Amazon is the best we've found. We have hope that we'll find a work around but for now this is the way things have to be. Thanks for sticking with us.

    • Agreed - I do not need any of Amazon's data, but would like to use your app - if there was an iOS app as well. For now I'll go and buy something else!
    • In truth, ALL information filled in automatically when you scan an item into DL comes from Amazon. While some of the basic information could be available from other sources DL1/DL2/DL3 only links to and uses Amazon presumably because negotiating and programming one format of access is easiest. So any data you did not put in by hand is "Amazon-sourced" data.

  • Just to throw my tuppence in...

As with the others before, the lack of iOS app connectivity in DL3 will stop me from upgrading too...

That being said, as iOS7 currently stands, I can't seem to get DL2 to sync with it anyway (iPhone 4/iPad 2/iPad Mini) which leaves me carrying an old 3g iPhone with whatever obsolete iOS is on it (4 maybe), just to keep my library with me... The app has been progressively broken as iOS has moved forward (on iOS6 - at least - attempting to use the quick-jump function, i.e. the alphabet down the right hand side of the screen, led to the app crashing out every time...)

DL has been fantastically useful over the last couple of years, but with this insistence on sticking with Amazon for pulling up data, I'm already looking for an alternative mobile option, and I'd be loathe to recommend DL it to anyone else either.
    • getstatisfaction's login system sucks!! if you forget to login before creating a comment, it just throws everything you wrote away! Lame as hell.
      ------------------
Anyway, I updated my iPad 3 to iOS7 (release) before my iPhone 5 in order to test some thing. I was able to successfully install DL iOS app and sync to DL desktop app, version 2.7.8 with no issues. Remember, ALWAYS turn off bluetooth before syncing.

  • Same here: if DL3 won't sync to the old iPhone app it's no-go for me.

But maybe there's a way to have our pie and eat it, if Delicious Monster is willing: As the iOS code is sitting there going nowhere, would you contemplate open sourcing it?

Then, if some people took the code and make it sync to DL3 this wouldn't be something Amazon could hold against Delicious Monster, could they?

  • Would open sourcing it mean that users could "share" their copy of the old iOS data app with others? I had gotten a copy from someone but cannot activate it because it is linked to that persons Apple account and I don't have their password.

    iPhone App support in DL3?.

So, where is the iPhone app support in DL3? If this is something that was removed from support, this is a deal breaker for me. The only reason I use DL is to have it portable. Publishing to the web is CLUNKY and SLOW. I appreciate that Amazon is nasty, but there has to be a workaround, it was in DL2 for YEARS after Amazon got funky.

  • It's a bit early to assume the DL2 iOS App won't work with the released version of iOS 7. I'm sure Apple hasn't done anything to consciously kill it. In fact, unless Will did some proprietary stuff to make it work (violating Apple's developers guidance) it likely will work when all is said and done. Apple has no incentive to break working iOS 6 Apps that played by the rules. So, keep your fingers crossed (and please check it with each new iOS 7 update to keep us informed)!

    Thanks for the heads up.

Quick update with some good news.

Uninstalled the legacy iOS app completely and reinstalled it under the iOS7b3 dev preview (on an iPhone 4), and it will still sync with DL2. Yay!

I had the iPhone connected via USB with the bluetooth turned off, and sync went through without a hitch.

Unfortunately, using the quick jump alphabet down the right hand side still seems to crash the app out.

    But Yay!

    • The legacy iOS app always syncs over WiFi, connecting it to your mac via USB used to cause more problems, just like bluetooth.

      My guide has always been:

      - Turn off bluetooth on the phone
      - If you have the phone locking after 1 or 2 minutes, either set it longer or turn off the auto lock
      - Close down all other apps
      - Click sync from the Mac side, more issues are seen if you sync from the iPhone side
    • Never had an issue with the iOS device being plugged into the USB - but yes, it's imperative to switch off the BT.

Just updating to let you know it still works under beta 5 (unlike some other apps that have so far failed to work under any of the betas!)

In any case, I'm glad to hear that iOS 7 so far doesn't break the legacy app.

  • Hi!

Another possiblity to have your database on your iPhone / iPod Toch:

    https://getsatisfaction.com/delicious...

You have to export/import to the app every time something changes in the database, but it's the best overview on my iPhone of my DL-Library with the least nerving things to do to have it.

    Greetings from Germany,
    Matthias

    • Sadly there are not a lot of solutions coming from DeliciousMonster for getting data to mobile devices. Some of us have had to purchase other solutions and I for one have removed DL3 from my system. It was no longer worth my effort and I tell friends and family about the limitations of DL3 especially where access to information on a mobile device is needed or required.
    • I spent a day and a few bucks trying to get tapforms to just get a basic list of my library on my phone using an export from DL3. Pretty sure I got permanent brain damage and a tendency to outbursts of unfocused rage from that dalliance. I REALLY wish DM would just effing call Amazons bluff and add the ability to just have a basic library list on your mobile device. Far more useful than being able to select various exoitic wood grains for my library shelves. DM needs to get their priorities straight. They should also take a page from the iOs7 notebook and lose the tacky Trompe-l'œi effects and allow a much leaner faster library view. DL3 is absurdly bloated and slow. I basically paid $20 for the convenience of using my phone to scan items, traded for a much faster and simpler interface.
