Many of my iTunes movie titles are showing up incorrectly.

Several of my iTunes movies are showing up incorrectly. E.g., I own the movie Moon, directed by Duncan Jones. This shows up as "10 Must Own Sci-Fi Titles" by Duncan Jones. I own all four Bourne films, but these show up as one item, called "The Bourne Collection", by Doug Liman. I own Sixteen Candles but this shows up as "The Breakfast Club + Sixteen Candles".

Since iTunes items are uneditable, I can't fix any of this information. Is there a fix coming for this and/or is there a temporary workaround? Thanks!

  • Hey, Andrew -- when you open iTunes and look at these items, are they displaying with the same titles there? The way DL reads iTunes files is very straightforward.

  • Hi Kim, no, the titles appear in iTunes as they should ("Moon", not "10 Must Own Sci-Fi Titles"). DL3 is showing different titles than iTunes. Do you know why that might be happening?

  • I just ran this past our developer because it's seriously a new one on me. This has to be fixed on the iTunes level.

Click on one of the movies in iTunes and hit command-I to open its inspector. Look under the Info, Video, and Sorting tabs. Here's what they'll look like:

You'll find the title that DL is displaying in one of those fields. Change that title to the one you want displayed in DL and all should be well.

(Funny that The Breakfast Club is one of the titles in the mix. Did you know they had detention 30 years ago today? http://www.avclub.com/article/breakfa...)

  • Hey Kim, it looks like the problem is that DL is pulling the "Album" field instead of the "Name" field for my iTunes movies (screenshots included). This behavior seems like it makes sense for iTunes music, but that DL should be using the "Name" field for movies.

Also, DL has artwork for my movies which are saved locally, but not for movies which are not downloaded but that I have in iCloud. Is there a workaround for that issue?

That is amazing about Breakfast Club. I feel like I need to watch it tonight to commemorate.

  • Hey, I see this topic is marked as solved but it's not solved -- it actually looks like this is a bug in DL3 (DL shouldn't be pulling movie titles from the "Album" field but it is).

DL also isn't pulling artwork for movies that are on iCloud but aren't stored locally.

  • It's solved in that you now know what the source of the problem is and can delete the Album field in iTunes for movies that aren't part of a box set. Since it bothers you to have the thread marked that way, though, I'll change it to Acknowledged.

If the movie you've got in the Cloud is also available on Amazon, try selecting the movie and clicking command-R (Item > Refresh Details from the Internet.) I'm not sure DL has been able to communicate properly with iCloud since Apple removed their iWeb services, unfortunately.

  • Cool. It didn't bother me, I just wasn't sure if you guys had seen the last message. Do you mind forwarding info about the "Album" field bug to your developer, or maybe you have already -- because the suggested solutions don't work for me.

Refresh Details from Internet doesn't work on iTunes titles - the option is grayed out for all of my iTunes movies. I'd try your other suggestion and change the Album fields but iTunes doesn't allow you to edit fields for iCloud titles that aren't stored locally (text fields are grayed out and uneditable) so to do that, I'd have to download every relevant title I have in iCloud first, which would take hours to do with my connection speeds.

Sorry for being noisy about something so small, I used to be a programmer and before that was a QA tester so I get hyper aware of this stuff and always wish I could jump into the code to fix it since that used to be my job. It's just me being OCD, basically. Obviously.

Thanks again for all your help!

  • Oh, no, I understand very well how these niggly things can get under a person's skin. I didn't realize how inflexible it was for iTunes titles. (In all seriousness, I only own one iTunes video, and it's the Star Wars episode of Robot Chicken.)

I'll open a ticket with your screen shots. I don't know if we can prioritize this issue for the next build, but I can get it on the radar.

  • You have good taste in Robot Chicken episodes. For a long time, the only iTunes videos I had were Aqua Teen Hunger Force episodes (HAND BANANA has been watched 14,000 times) but then I caved and bought all kinds of crap I don't need. And now I'm having unnecessary aneurysms over things like "my imaginary internet movies aren't labeled correctly!!!!!", so obviously my priorities are in order.

I'm just trying to be a good, caucasian first world inhabitant by complaining about things which no one in their right mind should ever complain about. If I'd been born two hundred years ago, I'd have dysentery and bleeding gums, so what am I crying about?

    Anyway, thanks Kim, you're awesome.

  • Hee, thanks. I'm glad you came back with more information. I also realized that changing the status to "Solved," sure does read like, "We don't intend to ever do anything about this, LOL." I finally got a management seat on Get Satisfaction yesterday (after pleading for the power to smite spammers -- BTW, they were immediately smote.) I'm still trying to figure out how to stay on the light side of The Force with all the new options available to me.

  • To be honest, the only thing that I care about iTunes movies is how to play iTunes movies on non-Apple devices. With fairplay DRM protection in iTunes movies, it is impossible for us to watch iTunes movies on Samsung smart TV, Android phone, Windows player, etc. Fortunately, there are DRM removal program to help us get rip of encrypted DRM protection freely. M4V converter for Mac is my option.

  • It’s a bad news for iTunes addict to hear that iTunes store is not working well now, which means that you can’t enjoy iTunes movies, TV shows, music videos perfectly.
So as for me, in order to avoid this dilemma of using iTunes, the best solution for me is to backup my iTunes digital content to external hard drive or my other folders instead of iTunes library.
But you might meet some obstacles to do this like me due to DRM technology. Fortunately, you can get DRM-free iTunes movies and TV shows with the help of iTunes Media Converter Software. BTW, DRmare has unveiled its Thanksgiving Deals to express thankfulness and gratitude for all users, so you can get any DRM remover at up to 50% discount.

  • I have over 500 movies. It is unrealistic to expect your users to manually edit their iTunes movies, I have very many which have incorrect titles in DL3.
