Considering how difficult a time FileMaker Pro and the now discontinued Bento apps had, and even now, the occasional problems with contacts, mail, reminders, notes...... all syncing, across any device, I can only imagine the challenges.

Thank you so much for your awesome product!
I am good with the limited interface between my iOS device and Delicious.

You all are awesome! Thank you again, for your innovative, very cool apps!

I have had Delicious on my macs since I got a MacBook with an iSight camera back in 2007. Please do not get discouraged. Keep up the fantastic work!

  • Wil, thanks for the candid response. I, like others, love DL and I think that's why we're so passionate :-)

I can't speak for everyone, but I was simply hoping for a way to have a list of what I already own on my phone so I don't buy it again. Syncing is great, and an iPhone viewer is a dream, but I would love a way to know if I already own something - it doesn't have to let me add new content. Is there a way to pull this off without having to manually export a list each time before I go shopping?

    Thanks!

    • I use the print PDF to iBooks to create portable lists of my books, music and movies. Just today I used the search feature in iBooks while in the bookstore to confirm that I do have books A and B but not books X, Y and Z. The 2 column PDF gives cover image, author, title and publish year - what else do you need to ID doubles? Just delete the old PDF and create a new one every few weeks to keep up to date.

I use smart shelves to separate out books, music and movies (don't have games) and pre-sort movies by title only and the 2 others by creator + title to make quick scanning easier when not using Search for a title. I rename each PDF in iBooks (DL-Books-Nov2014) as created to keep them separate and clear.

Easy to do and fully meets my needs. Scanning barcodes doesn't avoid duplicates anyway as I found when I bought a book I already had in a different format - different numbers on the two editions meant DL accepted the new scanned item with zero warning.
    • I do close to the same, only export each media type to Numbers (XLS) and then combine in to one Excel Workbook and massage them (sort, remove columns I'm not concerned with, etc). At thousands each of Books, Music and Movines my PDF would be bigger than my phone's capacity.

  • I carefully read your answer. I did not think that the ratings of your software on the Mac App Store, could jeopardize your business. But I shall think of that in the future. Still, I never made a bad critic of your software on the Mac App Store: I wrote what I wanted to express directly to you, on your forum.

I acknowledge what you explained to us. But I still have questions: why do applications like DVDpedia, CDpedia and Bookpedia synchronize with the iPad/iPhone and DL doesn't ? Don't they have to face the same problems with Amazon, Core Data, etc ?

If you can solve these problems, I will certainly upgrade to DL3 because of all your competitors, DL2 (already) is certainly the one who works best with iSight and imports new items at incredible speed. the "pedia" series do not work so fast, and very often gives the message "not found" whether you use iSight or the UPC code.

The only thing that's missing for me is the possibility to use more user-defined fields for specific entries (for example: operas on DVD they are not movies and require more fields for the composer, the singers and their tessiture (i.e. not simple "actors"), the conductor, and so on).

  • I am not certain, but I think one reason those other programs may not have deleted their mobile versions is because they link to data from more sources than just Amazon. This may allow them to get away from Amazon saying "this data is OURS", but as you have mentioned, linking to multiple sources does slow down the process - and what do they do with conflicting information.

An interim solution here (other than manual export/import) would greatly allay the people that consider this a huge issue (like me). For instance, the widely used Dropbox hack broke in Yosemite. So there really is just nothing now. Simply letting the files be stored on Dropbox *easily* and then relying on users not to do stupid things like try to access from multiple machines at the same time would be perfectly fine for me for the medium term.

  • I've actually got a workable system using Dropbox that did not break with Yosemite using Scenario and a simple AppleScript to quit DL3 when my computer goes idle or the screensaver starts.

I described it in this thread: How do I store my Delicious Library 3 database in Dropbox?.

It still would be helpful if DL3 deployed a lock-file mechanism like Yojimbo does to prevent accidental overwriting of data by two computers having the DL3 opened simultaneously.

    Hi Wil
After reading your post, I decided to support your business, buy DL3 and give You a five star rating. Thank You for explaining the topics about synching in great detail. I'm one of the early Users but still stuck with DL2.8.5 since I happen to own your fabulous iOS App and think that sync in my pocket is a killer feature.... but now since iOS8 broke that nice little App (kudos for making such a good app which kept working through soooo many iOS Upgrades ;-) - I just jumped into the AppStore to do it ...but found out to my amazement that you support Yosemite only - oh well - I really don't understand how so many developers can make an exclusive app for an infant operating system which is barely out of it's diapers... I'm a consultant - and believe me - there's tons of potential customers out there waiting for approval of their IT Department for the newest iteration of ANY operating system b4 they jump. By doing so - you are postponing your own sales for all those folks, including me, sadly !
    Oh well... later then ;-)

  • I really appreciate your response to they syncing and iOS app. I also understand what you mean about low ratings. I have been using your app for many years now and I love it. I have always wanted a way to sync between computers, and there use to be a way using some tricks and dropbox. Now that is gone with Yosemite. They backup and import options is good, but there are times when you close the app and forget to upload it to say dropbox, so the option really isn't great for me. Most of the low ratings are probably because of the lack of cloud sync and iOS backup. The only way I have got around this is to publish my site to my webpage, so that way I always have my inventory on hand. Now, I bought this from you before the app store, so I am screwed in giving you a review on the app store. $25 is too much for me to pay when I have a perfectly good version working. There must be something you can do to allow us to buy the app from the app store? Those of us who bought directly from you. A free transfer, of a code to use for a $10 update. That way those of us who do like your program can download it and review it as well. That would also help with the iCloud sync when you finally implement it.

  • I hope something better than export/import will come along one of these days. This is a bit frustrating.

My workaround now is to export to a Dropbox folder where it can be snarfed up on the target computer.

    Thanks.

Is there still no solution to sync'ing between multiple macs?

I upgraded to 3 and can't even tell where the database is anymore.

Syncing is easy if we can just sync the database using Dropbox or Sugarsync -- we don't need iCloud or anything Apple related.

If you can't have 2 users using the database at the same time, that's one thing -- it doesn't have to be so sophisticated that it figures out the correct data if 2 people on different computers are using the database simultaneously.

We just need the ability to sync one database at time -- you literally advertise that it's "easy to sync between computers" -- as if exporting the entire database, then importing it into another computer is "syncing." If you think that's synchronization, you don't know what the word means.

Please figure out or add this simple and crucial function -- DL is losing it's value by not being able to sync.

  • Have you guys considered hiring external help to get this sync done? I have seen quite a few apps with sync working within their app, whether it be through iCloud, Dropbox, or an in-house proprietary sync solution (if the data doesn't play well with the aforementioned). If you can't get this done internally, perhaps it's time you considered looking externally. Customers have been patient...

this app is dead and has been before version 3 limped out of the shadows I supported it for version one and Two I have moved on as it looks the devs have too.

  • I’m dissappointed
So, clearly i just bought ticket on a sinking (as opposed to synching) ship. Sigh, I just paid full price based upon the name recognition and the (as I now realize) artificially inflated ratings of folks who are trying to preserve value in a product that they already bought that has been nerfed. Really, no movement on these issues in a year? No better way to view data in iOS than to publish a PDF? Enjoy my $40 I guess.

  • It's been years without any news of update or progress with DL 3. Only complains of their team not to be too severe in rating their product in order to keep them alive. But they obviously abandoned the software. I never bought DL 3, but bought the "Pedia" series (Bookpedia, DVDPedia & CDPedia. The interface is not as "showy", which I prefer, but they work very well, with customizable fields, and synching with iOS is quite easy through your local WiFi net. Personally, I would prefer iCloud, but if you sync immediately after entering new data, your iPhone or iPad are updated at once.
Moreover, the people who wrote the software are very kind, and very reactive if you have a problem.

  • So I tried a different "workaround" to try and get my DL3 (at home on my MacBook) to sync with my iPhone (while wandering the bookstore)... I came close - but no cigar (YET)

Since I'm running a Netgear router, I setup the OpenVPN built into the router and then installed the OpenVPN client on the iPhone, setup the config and got connected.

But while I can ping the phone's assigned VPN IP from the Mac and ping the Mac from the phone, the DL3/iOS app is not going over the VPN.

Is the protocol that you're using between the two routable, or do I have to put them on the same subnet?

  • If you DO find a way to synch a number of computers, PLEASE post it here because that will do a lot of us a great service! However,I follow another user's philosophy of exporting the data as a PDF document and sending it to icloud where I can access it on my phone/ ipad. I then just update this document whenever I need to, after having added new items to my 'master' copy of DL3 first.

  • It is actually pretty simple but requires a little bit of Fooling the DL3.

Rule #1, if you are using multiple systems only one can be on at the same time or you risk corruption of the Database.

    1. Shut Down your Delicious Library
    2. Go to the following location on your system via Shell or using the "Go To Folder" function of the Finder.
    ~//Library/Containers/com.delicious-monster.library3/Data/Library/Application Support

    3. Underneath that directory there are multiple folders. You want to move the one called "Delicious Library 3" to Any on-line service or Shared drive (Google Drive, Dropbox, etc)

    4. After the move is complete find out the location of the folder you moved it under... Lets say you moved it to Dropbox it would potentially be ~/Dropbox/Delicious Library 3

    5. Link the folders using the ln -s (Soft Link Command in the Shell.
As an example it would be ln -s ~/Dropbox/Delicious\ Library\ 3/ "Delicious Library 3"
Spaces can present some problems so please see how I have Delicious Library 3 above as "\" is an escape character in shell to use spaces.
