Third party sources and scripts for adding items (DVDs)

Hi. I love DL2, but unfortunately I don't live in either of the "official" amazon countries. This means none of the DVDs bought where I live (Norway) will work with barcode scanner, or rather the EAN wont. DVDs from play.com and amazon still do. Are the any plans to add other sources, or allow third parties to add other sources? I know this is a difficult topic for DM, as you need permission to rip sites' data, but the laws in Norway permit users to implement this themselves. This means if there was some way I could hook into the scanner, I could do this on my own.

Another question is if there are any plans to add something similar to DVDProfiler. AFAIK they have their own database which all their apps query for info. This would mean that if I add my DVDs with EAN, other Norwegians will benefit from this and be able to just scan their dvds. (Given I or someone else have added the dvd)

    hmm,

i'm living in belgium and I have this problem too, none of my books are recognised :-( There's another app (readerware) that can do this, but it doesn't have the neat interface or the barcode scanner

We're talking about this in another thread, here http://getsatisfaction.com/deliciousm....

The summary is, I'm looking at adding data sources for version 3, but I need the ability to search a data source by EAN -- if you find one where you can enter an EAN somewhere and get an item, then I should be good to go.

  • Wil: Some books don't have EANs or ISBN's because they were made before the creation of such things. I remember a while back my girlfriend was trying to add her library of books in, and had to do most by hand. Several books were listed repeatedly on Amazon, none with the picture of the book she had, some had pages listed some didn't, and it overall sucked.

The real issue was, if we googled to find information on the book, oftentimes a page (I'm pretty sure it was from librarything) would pop up with ALL the info on the book she had in her hand, pics, pages, everything. But since DL only works with Amazon, there's no way to import it.

My request is: Work with librarything if you can. (I wouldn't mind if there were a way to sync books from librarything to DL and back, either, similar with shelfari and goodreads)

  • I guess the answer is I *do* work with everything I can -- it's just that "can" for me means everything I've been able to do and do everything else with the program, which has meant only Amazon so far.

I'd LOVE to work with every database out there. It's a lot of work to make it invisible in the UI, though, and still work nicely -- I don't want to make promises and not keep them. Every new datasource I add is another datasource that I have to monitor for changes to their API, that I have to file bugs against, etc.

  • Hi Will-

Have a look at the following URL (i swear on my mother this isn't spam)...

    http://www.pcgs.com/cert/

This is the coin certification verification URL for the Professional Coin Grading Service. Note the barcode. Could the barcode on these holders likely hold the same number underneath - and if so how difficult would this bet to add to your software? It seems like a perfect match. Collectors would need to add their own images of their coins - but it would certainly save them some time filling in details.
