Right now I feel I've wasted my money on DL3 and have gone back to DL2.
How do I make objects (gadgets) appear as they do in DL2: transparent background without appearing as an image printed on a white box? In DL2 they look like objects on a shelf; in DL3 they look silly.
How do I get rid of the blue borders that appear when selecting an object?
How do I import my DL2 library and retain the sizes of vinyl albums? Around 20% of them are either squashed horizontally or shrunk to 1/4 the size. They are all perfectly sized in DL2.
The UI is very slow to react on my 2009 iMac with 8 Gb. I have the required environment (OS X 10.8.3, 64-bit processor) but I get no shadow effects at all and the whole thing runs like treacle. Even scrolling is unbearably slow cf. DL2.

Ok, vinyl sizes and items without covers are both fixed in our internal builds. When you get 3.01 please let us know if all your LPs display the way you want.

Thanks for all the feedback! It’s very helpful.
We didn’t want to mix “cut-out” 2D images with our 3D models, so we made an executive decision to draw objects like tools and gadgets inside their boxes. I wish we had a cool way to turn 2D art into 3D objects, but we really don’t, and we think it’d look jarring as heck if some items were flat and some were 3D.
We will continue to refine the look of the boxes, though. They’re kind of primitive right now.
LPs should be getting their sizes from the format, not from the dimensions. It’s a bug that they’re reading the dimensions, and we’ll fix that.
If your iMac doesn’t work with DL3 that’s a driver issue, Apple will have to fix Scene Kit. It’s a very new framework and they’re updating it furiously as we expose bugs in it.

1) not sure on the support for the old "unbordered" keyword yet, still looking into box formats - assuming you are talking about boxes and not gadgets
2) blue border - you can't it's what happens when you select an item in shelf view
3) check the dimensions on the items that don't look right, these are much more important in DL3 than they were in DL2 as they describe the item size in the 3D space on the new view
4) This is more than likely down to your GFX card/drivers not being powerful enough to render the SceneKit/OpenGL shelves. Switch to List view but let us know what card/chip it is. -

1) I'm talking about collections of objects, eg, those named "Gadgets" in the default DL2 library. I have my cameras and lenses in here. In DL2 each image cleverly renders as just the cut-out object itself sitting on the shelf, as long as the surround/background of the original image I used was simple and a single colour. DL3 is a huge disappointment here because now each camera and each lens looks like a printed picture on the front of a white box. A big step backwards as far as realistic look is concerned. Presumably DL2 automatically renders the image background as transparent, as long as it's a single colour/shade. Why isn't DL3 doing the same?
2) OK, shame as I prefer the way selected items appear in DL2, but I can live with that.
3) I don't think this is as simple as the dimensions of the image chosen for the album. Here's an example: add Depeche Mode: Delta Machine from Amazon U.K., EAN 0887654606310. You'll see that it shows as an upright rectangle in DL3, and yet the very same shows as a square vinyl album image in DL2 as does the image from Amazon. In fact, all of the vinyl album images which turn into rectangles in DL3 have exactly the same proportions; I'd expect it to be more random if it were linked to image dimensions (which are actually square). This looks to be a bug.
4) Graphics NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB. Switching to list view largely defeats the object of shelling out for DL3 over DL2. I really think a minimum graphics spec. should have been mentioned as this appears to be a waste of money for me. -

Another display problem in DL3 is that LP cpver images are displayed oblong, square, LP sized or smaller CD sized, probably related to the size of the original image however in DL2 they all displayed as square LP covers and if I could only find a CD cover image it automatically changed to LP size and form when I marker it as an LP Record. an this please be fixed?c
-
No, the size and shape of an item in DL2 was generally decided by the format. If it was a CD format, then you got a square CD shape regardless of if the CD came in a 16 inch vinyl pouch.
Same with the issues with box sets, slipcases, and other such oddities with movies.
In DL3, the dimensions are much more relevant to the size and shape of things, since the shapes of the items are 3D objects, and they can stretch and shrink in ways the static image overlays from DL2 couldn't.
It probably not therefore a bug, just better functionality, let down by bad data.
If you have any items that still don't look right, then let us know. -

Stu, it is decided by the format but if I inserted a CD image in DL2 and changed the format size to LP Record, the image would scale up automatically. Now in DL3 I have a mix of image sixes that don't reflect the format

Yes, this is what I described above (3). I don't believe it has anything to do with the original image size as, if that were so, the problem would be random. I think this is a bug and have provided a test example above so that, hopefully, this can be investigated. This particular example (just one that I remembered) produces the upright rectangle (oblong) and all those that display as oblongs are exactly the same in proportion. In my vinyl collection fewer display as shrunken squares but there are some.

for 3), the dimensions data being returned from Amazon are wrong (see the image). The detail view on the left, shows the dimensions returned from Amazon and its 3 inches bigger than it should be, and on the right a fixed version, where it's square as it's supposed to be.
Just to re-iterate...
check the dimensions on the items that don't look right, these are much more important in DL3 than they were in DL2 as they describe the item size in the 3D space on the new view

As to 1) I think this is a change in functionality from between 2 and 3. Due to the new 3D box model of DL3's shelves, the cutout images has gone the way of the dodo for gadgets and apparel.
Personally I found that the cutout model for many items was quite poor unless the source image was of high quality with good edges. Any time there was poor colour or reproduction or lower quality images, you either got too much colour removed from the image or not enough leaving jaggies reminiscent of a 90's gif laden Geocities page. -

OK, the vinyl library problem I now see is to do with the reported object dimensions, rather than the actual image dimensions (in pixels). Thanks to the image you posted, I can see that the reported object proportions are not equal (even though the actual image itself is square). I can edit that and make the proportions the same, and that does the trick. Taking things in order again:
1) The cutout model of DL2 works well for me - I gave it good quality images which results in the appearance of real objects sitting on shelves. In DL3 this just looks like a load of white blocks, each with an image of an object printed on the front. I understand your explanation but I just don't think it looks anywhere near as good as DL2. Shelves of white boxes with objects on the front vs. the realistic appearance of the objects sitting on shelves, which I think DL2 does pretty well.
2) Still prefer DL2's way of showing selected items, but not a big problem.
3) I can edit each album that shows incorrect proportions and make it square - it'll take a while but I now understand this is down to the item dimensions, not the actual image dimensions. Thanks for clarifying that.
4) My iMac 2009 with 8 Gb and NVIDIA GeForce 9400 256 MB does not like DL3, but I've just tried it on my 2011 MBP with both integrated and discrete graphics and it's much better on that. I still don't see any shadow effects (aren't shadows supposed to move with the cursor?) but in terms of usability, it's an improvement. I prefer to have my library on my iMac but I suppose I'll have to move it to the MBP. -

All that would fix this would be the ability to over-ride the dimensions of a class of objects, ie define the size of an LP, a CD case etc.

Another dis[lay issue that I have is with LPs that I can't find images for. Under DL2 they used a generic icon but at least displayed the Title. Now they are nameless. Is there a way of displaying the title and artist on these items?

>We will continue to refine the look of the boxes, though. They’re kind of primitive right now.
Thanks for the acknowledgement. Looking forward to improvements in the way these appear.
>LPs should be getting their sizes from the format, not from the dimensions. It’s a bug that they’re reading the dimensions, and we’ll fix that.
Excellent. Thank you. In which case I'll wait for the fix, rather than spend ages amending all the reported object dimensions.

It's surprisingly, unbearably poorly performing. I'm surprised that there's such a difference between the Nvidia graphics in the iMac and the *integrated* (let alone discrete) graphics of the MBP. I get the impression you'd expect the former to be perfectly usable with DL3 so perhaps a future mac driver update may improve things.
>Shadows don’t move with your cursor unless the mouse is down.
Aha! I've just figured this out after watching a video - shadows move around as different objects are selected and this works on my MBP at least. Thanks. -

OK, just installed the update and now LPs are displaying properly. Thanks!

Hello,
I just bought DL3 and I'ma also disappointed in the new display of items in "Games". I have imported my boardgames and the withe background of "non-rectangle" items is really ugly compared to DL2.
Is there a way to disable the 3D box model and have the background turn transparent automatically?
Or do I have to edit manually the images of my games?
Thanks! -
