I’m unsure

Will there be an upgrade discount for the upcoming Delicious Library 3 for users who already own version 2.x?

See title. I am hopeful for DL 3 but was wondering if I have to pay full price as a user who has been on board since version 1 or if there will be a discount. Thanks!

  • I'm sorry, there is no official word on that yet.

If you have purchased DL2 from the Mac App Store, then I would take it in good faith that there will not be a discount as Apple does not offer a process to enable upgrading from major versions of software.

If you purchased your DL2 direct from Delicious Monster, then there may be a good chance of a discount being offered.

see for example the offer that was in place for previous users of DL1 upgrading to DL2, they had a 50% discount. http://gsfn.us/t/3y751

The other side of this coin is that how do you offer a discount for direct customers without offering one for the Mac App Store customers, without causing resentment and bad blood from them.

Wil actually wrote about this quite a while ago and nothing has changed. http://blog.wilshipley.com/2012/03/ma...

  • The answer is “sort of.” Since we can’t do upgrades at a discount through the Mac App Store, we just lowered our price to $25 for everyone.

I wish I could do something to reward buyers of earlier versions, but it’s just not possible with the Mac App Store—we don’t even have a list of who bought Library 2 from them.

Don't get agitated... 25 bucks is a good price for a product like DL3.

DL2 doesn't stop working just because DL3 was released.

    $25 is a good price.

You have to understand where I'm coming from... I held off on buying DL2 for a long time because I was turned off by the fact that there was no iOS companion app and I wanted to be able to scan from my phone. So I waited for an iOS app, waited for an update to DL2, waited, waited, and finally I had a bit of free money so I decided to buy DL2. After all, if an iOS app came out or an update was released I would be able to take advantage of those new features. NOPE. Here comes DL3... full purchase only.

I don't think I'm out of line to say that's bullshit... it's bullshit.

Put me in the "just upgraded" category as well. I'd been on Bruji's Pedia software for a while and got sick of waiting for them to fix their barcode scanning, so I switched to DL. A month ago. Now I read these incredible reviews of DL 3, and I'd like to upgrade, but to pay full price (or even 71.42857% of full price)?

I get that Apple's App Store has this sucky thing about paid upgrades. But why pass on the suck to the users?

Hmm...I too have been using DL from the first and if I divide the money spent for it by the many, many years of its use then I have gotten a great deal of value for very little. $25 is not much to pay for a major upgrade if one has been using the older versions over the long haul. (Recent DL purchasers? Well, that's a different story and my argument doesn't apply.)

I downloaded the new version, imported my old library, kicked DL 3.0's tires for about 5 minutes and purchased it.

  • I’m concerned
I agree with Michael. The app used to cost $35 and I think the upgrade price was $20. So, Delicious Monster is being generous to offer the new version to everyone fo $25. For those upgrading, it's like getting a discount.

I also agree with recent purchasers. Will: Set a date like a month before release. Either give all purchasers of 2 in that month a discount code or contact your purchasers and let them know the option is on the table. Set a deadline after release for the discount to end, say, July 1.

You don't have to create separate codes through the Mac App Store because you're creating your own web store, too, right? You could just require a valid license code. (Make sure to invalidate codes from Serial Box.)

    Hi,
I purchased DL2 a number of years ago and just purchased the new version today.

I did look for an upgrade price when I read that the new version was available but I did not see one. I purchased the new license because I have used the previous version and $25 wasn't all that much to pay for something I find useful.

Still, I understand that if you have recently purchased the previous version you deserve some consideration. Please be patient and I am sure that the good folks at DM will surprise you after they have recovered from this major software release!

I bought DL2 TWO DAYS BEFORE DL3 came out!! I wish I had known DL3 was upcoming prior to buying, I would have waited. :-/ So technically, it's going to cost me $60. I sent them an email hoping they could make me a happy customer but I haven't heard back from them (probably won't anytime soon because of product release and only three staff support members). I'll bite the bullet and give them their money since I've already migrated my DB over to DL3.

If we purchased from Delicious directly and have a registration code, why can't we purchase an upgrade? Bad form. I love using it and have recommended it to MANY through my technology resources website. Paid about $40, I think, a few years ago and love it, but not willing to pay $25 MORE just to get basically a newer copy. You should have an upgrade link where we can provide our registration code to get the update.

I have no problem with upgrades, but I bought it two months ago!! Come on! It's misleading to put your product on sale when you are about to release a new version that you expect people to pay for. I paid $25 for Delicious 2, and now you're saying that it is worth $25.

I see that Delicious 2 has been out since 2008. I bought it two months ago. Do you really think it's fair that I pay the same price that new customers pay or people that bough it in 2008?

You can offer an fair upgrade by allowing people to send their App Store receipt and exchanging it for a license from your own web store. Anyone who purchased Delicious 2 in the last six months should get Delicious 3 should get a license free. Other's should pay a fair price, between $15-$20

If you are not comfortable with upgrading to the shiny new version of Delicious Library, just leave it out. 25$ is not much for such a great app. I bought it and I'm happy. Developers are hard workers and need also some money...
    • Says the man who didn't *just* spend $40 to turn around and find that the new shiny (with tons of new features AND the companion iOS app) will cost another $25 bill. So I'm supposed to just sit here on version 2 and be proud of the fact that I spent twice as much money for an immediately obsolete and inferior product that will never get another update and will never get new features, etc?

      Easy for you to say...

I bought DL2 too and am now stuck with an old version that will not get upgrades or fixes or buying the new DL3. The developer could have updated DL2 and put some money into advertising to woo new users - instead they chose to screw their current and long term users for the sake of selling a completely new and separate app. I hate this kind of business behaviour - it seems to be fairly shortsighted too.

    • So...those of us who purchased DL just recently should just pay double this year for the software? You paid $35 two years ago, and now another $25 is perfectly reasonable. But I just plopped down $35 a month ago to buy, and now I've got outdated software that I can pay another $25 to upgrade. Yes, I know my "old" version is going to work just fine forever and ever, or at least until I upgrade my OS, at which point it'll probably stop working and I'll be forced to upgrade. But if I'd known there would be a new version coming out a month later, I certainly wouldn't have purchased in March.

This is my big problem with this whole thing. I understand paid upgrades. I understand devs need food too. I get that new software can't always be free. It's the people who just got in that are the ones who feel screwed here. I can't begin to count how many times I've seen paid upgrades to software where there's an upgrade path for those who just bought in. "Version 5 is out; it's a $40 upgrade, unless you bought version 4 this year, and then it's only a $10 upgrade." Hell, when I bought my iMac in 2011, it came with a complimentary upgrade to Snow Leopard when it came out a month or two later--even Apple, who the folks at DL seem to want to demonize for their upgrade policy in the App Store, does it.

At the end of the day, I find myself asking "Do I really want to put more money into this if the possibility exists that I'll have to plunk down nearly as much a month later to upgrade?" I'll freely admit, that's unlikely here; I'm sure it's not likely that version 4 is waiting in the wings. But that's what I thought a month ago...
    • Indeed, and I'm one of the lucky ones I've been a DL user since v1 but only really started to use it around 2.2 time. Look at the date on Wil's article I linked to at the top, it's over a year ago. He knew this day would come over a year ago and there's nothing he can do about it. All users are getting a discount, DL3 should have been $40 or there abouts, but everyone is getting it at an upgrade price of $5 over the upgrade price of the previous version.

I don't disagree with their business practice like some are saying. My issue is I bought it recently, not 5 years ago, not even 1 year ago. I purchased it because on their website they talked about a coming iPhone app that would work with it. Now there is an app, but it will only work if I upgrade. They should have made it clear the app would not work with the current version. They also had sales and tried to get new customers leading right up to the release of the new version, that is pretty shady.

I don't think it was shady, but it is rather stupid. If they had said on the website two months ago that a new, paid version was coming, and that they would email you with a release date if you wanted to wait for the new version vs. purchasing the existing version, people could have made an informed decision.

For my part, removing the static sidebar from v3 has rendered the app almost useless. I'm reverting to v2, and wish I could transfer my purchase to someone who would like it.

    • I have been a DL user for many years but I will not upgrade even at the reasonable $25 when other users that bought a month or two ago get ripped having to buy again so soon after.
    • "Feelings were going to get bruised"

That's a bullshit cop-out. Wil had (and still has) the option to offer free upgrade to those who purchased in the last 90 days or 45 days or whatever he choses to do. This is a well established practice among developers who choose not to shakedown the customers who happened to buy in at an inconvenient time (through no fault of the customer). Even Apple does this through their up-to-date programs with every new release.

Delicious Monster deliberately promoted and sold (at 2x the cost) a product that they fully intended to drop support for. They implied the arrival of a companion iOS application and there's also an implied commitment to ongoing support, updates, and an upgrade path with any commercial software. That's the norm in the software industry.

Apologists can spin this however they want, but Delicious Monster is wrong to be treating their customers this way.

If you look over the comments here you've got two types of people. The long time users saying "quit bitching about it, it's just $25" and then you have people who just purchased version 2 and had the rug pulled out from under them.

So, to all the long time users: Bugger off, this is not your fight.

Asking someone to pay $40 one month and then $25 the next month is a disgraceful money grab. Yes, the devs need to eat, but they also need to not stab their customers in the back. The fact is, the Devs very recently teased an iOS app. I bought the app on the promise of ongoing support and the possibility of an iOS app (which is the killer app, in my opinion). Now I learn that I need to pony up "just $25 dollars more!" to get ongoing support and to use the iOS app.

It's like a reverse Billy Mays: "BUT WAIT, THERE'S LESS! ORDER NOW AND YOU GET HALF THE PRODUCT FOR THREE TIMES THE PRICE!!"

As for me, I have half a mind to chargeback my credit card and write the whole thing off. Yes, that's petty and unethical, but apparently so are the Devs so I'm sure they'll understand...

I think an important question is: Will the devs continue to update version 2. If they do, that's fine I can stick with it. I'm a student and the $30 I paid was an investment. Version 2 is a good app and was worth what I paid. However, most small devs do not want to spend the time updating their old apps. The upgrade should be a smaller reasonable amount, because it ultimately saves the devs time having to update older versions.

So, my question is have the devs been releasing regular updates for Version 1? If not, they will most likely drop Version 2 and I have an app for less than two month that is now obsolete.

I recommend complaining to the app store about this. They need to allow a way to upgrade an app. It's not fair for the devs. It puts them in a difficult position. For now, the best solution is for the devs to offer in house serials for a non-app store version.

If it's worth $25 now in the App Store, the upgrade should be around half of that and whoever purchased Version 2 within the last six months should get a free serial.

If the new regular price is $25, then it's worth $25 and not $40. Otherwise, the devs can just say "hey, this is worth $200, but we're giving you a reduced regular price of $25." That doesn't make any sense.

If it's worth $40 than sell it at half for a week and then raise it back to $40.

  • At the end of this article you will find mention of the original launch price of $40.

    http://www.powerpage.org/2013/04/25/d...

At This Time the developers have reduced the price to $25 for any and all purchasers. The App Store cannot distinguish and discount for people who already own DL2, particularly since most long term users did not purchase through Apple, so a general reduction will give the better price to all regular users who had kept checking to see when DL3 would be released.

It's just the way it goes, and I am glad the App Store is allowing developers to make money instead of being tied up in licensing and piracy issues. It is making MORE software available for ALL of us.... CHEAPER.

  • I’m disappointed
I bought DL2 a couple of years ago but haven’t used it due to the tedium of entering items. The barcode scanner is very slow, and of course I had to bring things to my computer to scan them in the first place. On top of this, many items did not display in the UI very well, so I gave up in frustration.

Still, the idea behind the product is a good one, so I was excited to see DL3 released, which to me looks more like what DL2 should have been (save especially for the skeuomorphism, which I very much dislike). The scanning app finally makes the software useful for me, but I find the lack of upgrade pricing disappointing. Yes, I’ve read the responses to other posts in this thread, but for me, $25 is steep for my use case, though I can see that the product would be worth that for others.

Of course it is worse for those that just bought the product and are surprised by the sudden new release; that treatment is even more disappointing.

Write to Apple instead. They're the only ones that could offer upgrade pricing.
Developer have to use what Apple provides them (and thus effectively us customers) with.

Developers cannot offer upgrade prices if Apple doesn't allow them to. Period.
Same as you cannot connect a USB-Scanner to a Classic Mac if there's just no USB port on a Classic. Sure, you'd want to. But it's not up to developers or customers - it's up to the guys in Cupertino that run the App Store.

Like I said in my first post, I don't have a problem with paying upgrades. The problem is that they deliberately promoted a sale for version 2 when they knew they were going to release version 3 in less than two months.

This is subversive and not fair to the people that dug into their pockets for a now obsolete application. Even beyond this, it is customary for a developer to give some kind of a "heads up" when they are working on a new version. What they did is wrong and I am doing my best to complain to Apple and other places where people discuss Apple apps that these guys are subversive and untrustworthy.

    Upgrades?.

So, 5 years ago there was a forever 1/2 price upgrade option going from v1 to v2. Is there not an upgrade option now to go to v3?

  • Apple did not allow for a special upgrade pricing, especially as many long time users did not buy through the App store so Apple has no record of your earlier purchase. To accommodate longtime users Delicious Monster reduced the original launch price from $40 to $24.99 assuming that most people buying it in the launch period would be upgrading as opposed to those who had never used DL before.

  • Lame. You have my registration. Some developers are in cahoots/complacent w/ Apple's store policy, and some are not, letting users know the advantages and disadvantages for everyone. And some let users upgrade if not purchased through the Appke store. Apple and developers need to change the policy; no one should have to pay twice in one week or one month, or even in one year as far as I'm concerned.

  • "Lame. *You* have my registration."

No need to call ME Lame. I do not work for DM/DL; in fact the only people commenting here that do have "Official Rep" after their name. The rest of us are just fellow users exchanging information and helping each other out.

According to William Shipley (who IS an Official Rep) they do not even have a list of people who purchased DL2 from Apple's App Store.

  • Sorry, I wasn't calling you lame. I was calling the excuse (of Will's) lame. He is using the fact that some users purchased through the Apple store as a reason not to offer upgrades to the many (more?) who have purchased via DM's store.

Other vendors offer an upgrade path if the user buys through their own store, and everyone wins. The vendor doesn't have to give Apple 30%, they get user data, and they can give users discounts for upgrades.

DM could do this as well. They still sell directly.

  • I'd hoped for an "upgrade" price from 2 to 3 as well. Bottom line is this "strategy" will cost them sales. Unfortunate.

  • Well, I'm still trundling along with DL2. If I had any ideas about forking over for DL3 so soon after buying DL2, they're totally gone now, after the fiasco with Mavericks.

I'm usually a big supporter of the small devs but things have been pretty mishandled all around.

I currently have Mavericks OS 10.9.2 on a MacBook Pro bought the fall of 2012. I recently had a screen problem and went to the Apple store in Spokane, WA. They sent it out and I got it back at no cost except for the content. They did a complete reinstall. Unfortunately, my TimeMachine Backup failed me and I lost all my content including my DL2 library.

I contacted the folks at DL and Kim worked with me. I had the old DL1 library still on my PowerBook and over the last four weeks, Kim spent a lot of time working with me and finally got it working fine under DL2.

Considering there are only three of them I was surprised and pleased to get the help that they provided caused by a problem that was no fault of theirs. That is the kind of company we should be proud to be a part of and to promote and support. There are so few out there that have this kind of committment to their subscribers for a product that no other company comes even close to providing.

If you don't like it stop using it. Otherwise be civil and patient with these folks and they will do their best to fix your problem.

    Thanks Kim!!
