initially I have a problem with my LATITUDE D800 power adapter, it has become defective. I ordered another adapter compatible with my Dell, then a second, but my portable displays at startup the famous message "the ac power adapter type cannot be determined...", although both adapters are compatible with Dell and the Latitude D800. I contacted Dell, they suggested for me to update the BIOS but nothing changed and the message still appears. how can I believe that Dell havn't a solution to this problem? and why there is not a BIOS update to solve this problem. all I want to say : zero appreciation for the Dell laptop!

I have the same problem on a Latitude D820. In the past week or so, the insulation on the part of the wire closest to the laptop has worn through from normal use. The battery won't charge, and I get the error on startup. I don't think it's under warranty any more, but this seems like a pretty routine problem on these boards. Sort of annoying that the power cord is engineered in a way that clearly causes people problems...

I've been working this problem with my Dell Latitude D600 for the past year or so, and have been gradually eliminating the likely suspects. I may have completely accidentally stumbled on a [the?] solution recently. I've had at least two folks independently confirm they were able to effect a "fix" using my solution. I've described the no-cost/no-repair solution off the Dell Community Forum bulletin board (

It worked for me. Take a look and see what you think. I'll be interested to hear if this works for others. Good luck.
