What projects are everyone working on? Share here!

Hi Demibooks Composer user friends!

I'd love to check out the projects we are all working on. Let's all post a little about our current book apps here.

I'm working on an animated story about my Jumble Bugs characters, the book will be about 25 pages long, and should be finished in April. I'm working with an illustrator who designs the characters based on my plush toys, and I'm doing all the animation / composer work myself.

Hi, Emily, I think this is a good idea, I'm sure it would be useful to everyone who works with composer to see the different and varied ways peoples' ideas are realised. From puzzle books or adventure books to learning and educational
ideas, and straight old fashion storytelling, It should prove very interesting. I envy your 25 pages, just how packed are they going to be and how big do you think your book file size will turn out to be? I'm struggling with many more pages but they will be relatively light, but it will turn out to be quite large, with such a new format its hard to get a handle on whats possible, hopefully this thread should throw some light on these questions, and more..!
    Regards
    M.

    Hi MrVieux!

I estimate the total size will be around 40mb. My pages do have a fair amount of animation, but I try to keep each animation to 20 frames or less and then loop them. So far so good! Composer has so much potential for all kinds of books like the ones you listed, I'm so excited to see what other people create using it!!

A wonderful tool, I am so happy that it exists! I couldn't be doing this without it.

    Hooray for Composer!

I've got three things going. A Spanish-English version of Not Without Bear is on hold until version 2 is released and the team can get back to exploring the multi language function. I've also started working on another of my out-of-print books, Gramma's Walk, which is quite different than NWBear, then got side-tracked into a more urgent project that has to remain secret for now.
Here's a link to my Gramma's Walk book page:

Emily, excellent thread idea... I concur with MrVieux's comments which are very pertinent...

I have a number of project ideas in progress but my main one is an adventure book called "Volshebney Les" or in english "The Magical Place", it's a work of love and has morphed from just a book idea, to an interactive book, to now an interactive adventure book!

I try to do everything, from animations, graphics, artwork, music, narrations, sound effects and writing but to be honest it's a lot of work for one person. So i do cut corners sometimes, more so on the art and music but where I can i try and create as much original material as i can. If i use any stock art material or music tracks i will edit/blend, over paint the art, montage it and mix and re-arrange and add musical motifs to any stock music tracks, so that it all in the end is a unique statement and more importantly it works for the story experience.

I am now using products like Daz4 and Poser for 3D animations and if anyone is interested then shoot over to the Daz3d.com web site because they are doing a promo on all their PRO versions in one bundle for FREE (thats $900 worth for free, no catches)... and it's great software for doing 3D animations, modeling, blending, scenery etc.

My project is currently about 40 pages and 122MB dcb file size... it's very graphically and sound rich... and hopefully one day so will i:)

That's it for now... loving the experience:)

  • Wow!! Thanks for sharing Anna and Doymarn!

Anna - that is fantastic! Not without Bear was the book that I learned the most from when I downloaded Composer Version 1. I liked the way you set up your interactions, and the animations fit in perfectly and didn't seem "forced" like some book apps that have random things in there. I've checked out your site and you have a lot of books that can be brought to life with Composer."I'm a Backhoe" would be wonderful too, I'm sure that is on your list ;) Looking forward to hearing about your secret project too!

Doymarn - I love the mysterious and intriguing look of your graphics, The Magical Place is an ambitious project and you must be having a ball putting your heart an soul into it! And remember you are not "cutting corners" by incorporating stock material, think of yourself like a film maker, they can't do every little thing themselves, it's the overall creative vision that you own and make yours!

I'm excited for everyone on this board, it is truly wonderful to see such creative people working towards their dreams!

Yes Wow! indeed ,it's great to see such diverse work here, I must say its all very impressive for such a new format, it's also encouraging and inspiring for me, especially the idea of doing larger projects...The Magical Place at 122MB size gives me hope to deliver my own project which is an adaption of a short story, so I'm tied to the length of it, and possible size, which is my worst fear, however I'm up to 100MB and still going ..at the moment I anticipate the final file to be 350MG... outrageous it seems , but I downloaded a loverly Beatles Yellow submarine book the other day and that was 320MB !! .. so... who knows...my admiration for composer is still growing too, It seems to be coping very well, I'm so impressed, its become even more of a joy to use and seems incredibly stable, The only problem I've had so far is a glitch with the paste function, but thats not a composer issue. My only regret so far is my project is really very traditional and not taking advantage of all the other thrills composer has to offer, but already I'm thinking maybe I'll start a shorter project in tandem, like Anna, and get to know other aspects of the program....Congrats to all !!

  • Yes, it is fun to have this peek at one another's projects...everything from cute fun to mysterious intrigue!

Thanks, Emily. I'm glad NWB was helpful to you. It's important that my interactions stay with the story and not be random, just because I can, but also fun to see how interesting and entertaining I can make them. Composer allows a lot!

I Am a Backhoe is on the list, and I have e-rights, but it's still under contract to the publisher with a non-compete clause so I'll have to have their permission or wait until it goes out of print.

I'm also eager to get to some brand new ideas. Years and years of work ahead of me!!

  • @Emily, thank you for your kind words of encouragement and you are right... "I am having a ball". And thank you for giving me confidence in knowing that I am not "cutting corners" in the way I am approaching the production of my project, I appreciate that feedback!

I just visited your Jumble Bugs website and my compliments on a very professional site and excellent promotion awareness of your coming Composer book. I think your marriage of an iPad book along with you plush toys will work very well for you... well done!

@Others... it's great to see the diversity of adaption and the enthusiasm of those of us that appreciate just what Composer is capable of. It really is a great product. I would like to encourage anyone that has the time to join some popular groups or forums and spread the word about Composer and of course that will work to build your profile too for your marketing awareness which is so important to succeed in this very competitive arena.

I recently joined a few eBook and publishing groups in LinkedIn and have made opinions in several threads about the topic at hand and then introduce the ability of Composer to professionals & new comers looking for solutions and not being aware of products like Composer and how it can solve their issues. My presence there amazed me on how blind a lot of the professional and service businesses are to products beyond the obvious players like Indesign, iBook Author and EPUB readers.

The more we get Composer exposed to authors and self-publishers on a grander scale, the better off we will all be in the benefits we will reap in a solid customer support base for Composer that this will no doubt enable DemiBooks to expand upon in their product and service offerings.

This thread is a great example of how we can demonstrate the power of Composer.

So lets get the Composer message out and secure it's place in the mainstream production choices for Interactive iPad book development. We all will be the winners if we do!

    Hi Niki,
I downloaded your app, it is wonderful!

The animations are lovely, my fav page is the one with the seals :)

I really like the look of the animals eyes throughout the app too. Background music is perfect, and the whole book is so sweet!

Excellent blog post - I agree t works well in your app having the page turns function later on after the animations have played.

Really looking forward to seeing your next projects, working with scholastic is fantastic! (accidental rhyming).

  • Hi fellow authors!

For the past 6 months, I've been working on an interactive book app that is near and dear to my heart. Along with my wife, Becky, I have taken a feature-length screenplay which we wrote five years ago, and transformed it into a rhyming poem, that along with beautiful illustrations, 9 fully orchestrated songs, and a continuous musical score, forms an ambitious ebook project for children and parents alike.

Set in a world of musical instruments, "Squeezy" tells the story of an accordion that desperately wants to play with the orchestra and win the affection of Clara, a beautiful clarinet and the orchestra's newest recruit. But an embarrassing audition leaves Squeezy dejected outside the concert hall steps. His chance encounter with a sage but scatter-brained metronome, Tick Tock, gives Squeezy hope that he'll be able to learn the notes and win favor with the orchestra's leader, Barry Baton.

Squeezy soon discovers that the Maestro's orchestra is not all it's cracked up to be. The maniacal conductor is using the instruments to do his bidding. Squeezy must find the voice within to stand up to Barry and free the orchestra from his tyrannical rule before Clara and the orchestra fall victim to the Maestro's Symphony of Sorrows.

Our website will be launched in the next couple of days and we hope to have the app ready for publishing through Demibooks within a week or so. In the meantime please follow us on twitter. @SqueezyBook

Thanks and best wishes to all of you with your own projects!

  • Hi everyone!! It's been so great to connect with fellow Composer Users.

I am the animator for a small publisher in Boston called Pinwheel Books. We are expanding fast, and are working on our next app for a print book coming out September 1st called "All About Poop": www.pinwheelbooks.com for more on the book.

It's a funny, educational book about the digestive system. And our app is going to have educational games, and fun interactions along with the story. We are super excited to have found Demibooks to create our app, and have just started learning how to use the software.

I'll be asking lots of questions along the way, and hope none of them are stupid!

We even ran a Kickstarter campaign for our book, and raised over $7000 to cover production and marketing costs. We can't wait to show you our app as it develops!

    Sincerely,
    Nicole at Pinwheel Books

Just now catching up on this thread. Wow, there are so many cool Composer apps coming out - you guys are creating awesome stuff!

My Composer app, Bud the Bunny, is live in the App Store and part of every sale goes to the children's non-profit literacy charity, Kids Need To Read, which was started by actor Nathan Fillion and author PJ Haarsma. Actress Clare Kramer (Bring It On, TV series Buffy the Vampire Slayer) reads the story which adds new "B" words one sentence at a time, building into a fun, tongue-twisting ending.

Bud got some great reviews from the Facebook community, AAPreciation. You can send them 1-3 promo codes and they give them out to parents, grandparents, teachers, etc. who then provide reviews back to the FB community - http://www.facebook.com/APPraisdal

  • Hi all

I haven't been on GS for quite sometime.

It's great to see all the project that's on the go!

For the last 6 months I have been busy with an app that has become my life's work.

I am working on an education book app for the deaf community of South Africa.
Many profoundly deaf children in South Africa can not communicate with their parents in Sign Language. most children only get diagnosed as deaf after they have missed their crucial language development of the brain. The purpose of this app and hopefully many more in a series, is to teach both hearing parents and deaf children basic sign language and to start the conversation so to say, between parent and child as early as possible.

My book app is 48 pages long, but it is written in 4 different Sign Languages, addressing the different dialects of Sign Language used in South Africa.

The book app is at about 48Mb, last time I checked. I do all the graphics, compositing, sound and video my self it is a lot of work for one person! I am finishing off the last of the Voice over tracks and master navigation for the app, this is the home streach!

I hope to have the app finished within the next week or so!

  • Sounds like a great project Karen and quite a challenge I'm sure... I am in the same boat as you doing all the various disciplines myself and I can identify with the scale of work this requires.

Look forward to seeing the finished product and wish you well on the marketing... the next challenge to surmount... it's all very rewarding in the creative self fulfillment and hopefully the financial rewards will match.

    Good luck!
