A month into my dentures and find eating somethings are difficult

A month into my dentures and I find it hard to bite into somethings like a ham and cheese sandwich, seems my teeth can't bite all the way through the bread, cheese and ham. Funny though I can eat a chicken strip using a fork . Could this be because I'm trying to use my front teeth as I normally would have? Has anyone else has this problem and if so how did you resolve it? Thanks in advance Shelly

I don't mind giving it time but it's very frustrating not be able to bite through a simple sandwich

I'm about 2 months in at this point and I've STILL got problems with sandwiches too.  I can handle pizza, burgers and darn near everything else I've gone after (Chicken wings are still a problem) but the joy of a regular roast beef sammich still eludes me.  What I've started doing at home is tearing the meat and cheese into smaller pieces while I make it because, like you, I cant bite all the way through the thing.  This way, only a small amount comes with the bread when I tear it off with my teeth.  I'm pretty sure there's some weird physics thing going on there, combined with the fact that we have nowhere near the bite force we used to.  A little trick I've been using is to push the food against my upper with my tongue when I take a bite to add in some pressure.  I'm also learning to "lean" into the food with my teeth, rather than trying to pull it away from from me.  Took me a couple weeks to figure out why my lower was coming out every time I hate - turns out I was pulling it out with food.

I had my first post-op bagel a couple weekends ago.  It was magical!

Thanks TJ glad I'm not alone, like you I can pretty much eat everything else but a sandwich and you're also right about the pulling with your teeth, it's so hard to break that habit.

But I did have a scallop plate today, and it was heaven

I can't eat with my dentures at all. Still eating like a baby. I have to eat alone and miss dining out. I hate it! Its only been a month for me also. The bottoms make me look funny so I won't wear them. So...I get what your saying completely. I am just praying my permanent s are perfect or I will cry my eyes out!

I hope it gets better for you Jeannie! Have you had your soft religns yet? That helps tremendously, it did in my case, I'm a few weeks into the relign now so dentures are loosing up a bit due to gums shrinking more, but I CAN eat ALMOST all foods.

I've had an upper partial since 2009 and have not been able to eat comfortably since. I don't go out to eat ever, because of the problems I have trying to chew food. It sucks and since only the wealthy people can have implants and all the other things that are so expensive EVEN with dental insurance. Greedy dentists and the entire dental industry are approaching the most hated profession, Greedy Lawyers!

I hear ya there, I was thinking about getting the posts for bottom dentures, but just for 2 posts to snap onto the bottom denture it's $4800 which sadden me, so on that note, I'm keeping my fingers crossed that at 6 months and hard relign is done, bottom denture won't float as much, or I'm stuck with it, unless I hit the lottery to pay for the posts

$4800 for about a total of 2 or 3 hours of work.....Simply ridiculous. As I said the Dental Industry as a whole are a bunch of greedy people. As Jerry Seinfeld once said " you know what a dentist is?' Someone who dropped out of medical school! I have good medical insurance and pay a $10 copay for office visit to my doctor. I even had a battery of tests done from my cardiologist and paid less than $50. I go to the dentist for a simple filling and leave there about $500 poorer, and it took all of 10 minutes to drill and fill. Maybe some day someone or some agency will put a stop to the Dental scam.

This is beyond sad.  Some people do great others don't.   I am 70 married and hate my bottom dentures.  For sure this has ruined my social life.  I eat without them.  As soon as I put them in I cant wait to take them out.  Not enough bone so I am stuck.  I decline all social engagements this has ruined my life.  If I had to date I would be alone the rest of my life.  Sorry if I sound gloomy but if I read a post that I can relate to I share.  People don't ever get dentures unless you are at the point of no return.  Dentures are a totally different world.  So if your teeth are not pretty deal with it.

I'm a native New Yorker. And I would be interested in chatting with you more about this. I've been off the site for a while because I'm having so many problems with my dentures and I'm at a point where I might be suing my dentist for malpractice. From the very beginning it's been a nightmare I started this journey in February and I'm no closer to having my problem is resolved so I've been very depressed and discouraged and frankly angry.

I'm so sorry Joan and Diane that you are having difficulties, right now I'm going through the healing phase of my gums so these dentures get looser and looser, which is very annoying, I do go back next month for another soft relign and am hoping by the time I get the hard relign they will be damn near perfect, keep your fingers crossed for me
