Awful taste from soft liner

I have been dealing with a stomach illness (including vomiting) for the past 4 days. I had cleaned my dentures as usual the night before I started getting sick but switched them to soaking in clean water so that they wouldn't be in the cleaner for several days (the cleaner already tastes terrible ).

Last night I put my teeth in because I feel naked without them and the taste was so bad that it started the vomiting all over again. I realize that it could have been a coincidence but it doesn't change the fact that my teeth taste terrible.

Any suggestions?

Sorry for the subject but it's a real problem.

Not quite the sams thing but this has happened to me & I discovered it was high amounts of flouride in dentistry filling materials, esp glass ionomer. Twice I thought I had stomach bugs til I found that out, apparently quite a common side effect of large doses of flouride. The nausea & vomiting stopped after 4 days, but then my mouth burned badly & the fillings had to come out anyway. So tho I wouldnt think there is flouride in dentures it might just be the chemicals in the materials.

Thank you Jodie! I may have to contact Affordable Dentures Monday morning to see what my teeth are made out of.

Unfortunately, I think the tummy trouble is more likely related to my kidney stones and infection which came on the same day.

I've had my teeth for almost 8 weeks so I'm GUESSING I would have found that sooner. I just REALLY need to make my teeth taste better.

Worse case scenario, I'm sure it won't bother me as much when my tummy is not so iffy.

Thank you though!

Alicia,
I hate to hear that you are sick on top of everything else you have going on.  I have a special tooth paste that is made for dentures, called Fresh-n-Brite.  First I soak them overnight and then rinse them off and brush them each time before I put them in my mouth.  I have also been rinsing with a non alcohol mouth wash.  I think it's Crest Pro-Health.  My gums are healing great and I haven't had any problems with my stomach since all of the bleeding stopped.  I hope you get the problem solved, This process we are all going through is hard enough without your teeth tasting bad.

Thank you so much Shirley! I will be asking hubby to go on a little shopping trip for me!

Thanks to my tummy trouble I am going to be missing the wedding of my best friend. A young man who is just 3 weeks younger than my son. A young man that I've watched grow up. Unfortunately the wedding is 3 hours away and there is just no way I can do that.

I did just find a very old bottle of Pro Health night time alcohol free mouth wash. After soaking them in my cleanser and brushing them, I put my teeth in cold water with a very small splash of the mouth wash. Hopefully tomorrow will be better

I’ve had my full set for a year, my top teeth have never been right, I went to affordable dentures in Odessa and Lubbock, terrible experience at both places, I regret ever going to those quacks. Now I have to wait until my insurance at my new job takes effect to get my teeth done right. Affordable dentures is a joke!

I am struggling with this as well. I cannot tolerate the taste! It makes me feel so suck and miserable. For me im pretty sure its the polymer compound. My mouth tastes like solvent which makes sense because plastics are really pertroleum. I have tried activated charcoal, dry baking sods, wet baking soda with lemon, and heat. So far nothing works. Even the so called hypoallergenic plastic tastes bad. Im terrified it will never end.

I coated my denture with colgate toothpaste and let it sit for 2 hour,no water.  Then I gently rinsed off the toothpaste and brushed with a soft toothbrush.  Soaked in polident cleaner (first time user of this) overnite.  Finally the taste is gone.  I hope this helps someone else.

BTW i have a document that i can share later that discussed the 3 different processes ti making dentures and most labs use the most cost effective but most harmful to the wearer process. We are on the road right now on a long distance trip so will try to remember to share it when we stop for the night.

Heather. Can you please send me the document you have? I just had my upper partial refined and it is making me so sI know. I can't wear them and my stomach is very upset and the smell and taste are horrible. I was told to scrape off the soft liner and use Dawn dish soap to scrub them. I'm afraid to put them back in my mouth. I've had an upset stomach since yesterday!I can also tell my BP went higher hand my chest felt like I had swallowed gasoline. Help!

I have a problem with the taste too. They taste like the powder inside latex gloves and leave me with dry mouth all day. I soak them with Polident of Fixident which helps for a very short time. I have had them for about 3 months and i still can't eat with them in. Augh.

It tastes like and smells like the acrylic powder used to make fake finger nails. I thought this would go away after a couple days. But y'all are saying weeks! Is it going to be like this forever? Does affordable dentures have another option I can ask for??

You can get free samples of Valplast & Duraflex from the manufacturers, don't know if that's any help, but I have them & they don't taste of anything.. to me anyway, but we're all different.     Usually you can get small samples of the material you are having your denture made of from the dentist or technician as well, so you can test before you have the real thing made up.   Tho I wonder if there's something in the process of making the final denture that changes things.   I have a 'test' denture made totally of Duraflex and that's fine as far as taste goes, just bluddy hurts!  I got a Dremel last week and chopped the thing in half so it only fits over one tooth - this is to see if I can tolerate the material for 4 weeks, sometimes reactions only occur after 3-4 weeks with me.  I can see this Dremel gonna come in very useful for shaving bits off a denture.  I just ordered a polishing tool, am hoping I can buff up the material to original shine if I ever need to chop bits off the real thing in future ,& maybe the dentist won't notice!    Finding a good SANE dentist is a process in itself, something about the job seems to send them half nuts.

This link explains very well the differences in denture processing and the dangers of each. I really wish I had known this before starting on this journey. This is the same reason why soft reline tastes so bad because its an imprecise process and the polymer is offgassing in your mouth. A denture will offgas for up to 30 years.

UPDATE - I did as I said (soaked in cleanser, brushed, rinsed, put in container with cold water and a couple splashes of alcohol free mouth wash), I just thoroughly brushed my gums, rinsed and dried my teeth and put a little poligrip (it was the first one I could grab). My teeth have no taste. I'm thrilled and they actually feel normal, or as close to normal as I think they are going to feel.

One thing that I have determined is that the cheap plastic container that the denture place gave me is a major contributor to the nasty taste. A couple days after getting my teeth done I was at Walmart looking at all of the options available. I found a hard plastic container with a strainer and lid for less than $2. I had noticed in the past that when I used the cheap one (easier to take when traveling ) I had a funky taste in my mouth. I think it just got more noticeable under the circumstances. The cheap, crappy one is in the trash and I will be looking for a different one to use when I do travel.

I also think that I will add a splash of mouth wash after cleaning my teeth every night.

I hope this helps others too!

I have been doing everything I could think of to rid mine of the awful taste. I now soak them in hot hot water to force them to off gas. Yesterday was the first day I was able to keep it in all day. Up until now I couldn't even close my mouth without making it so much worse. I feel optimistic though that the hypoallergenic version might be a bit less painful to adapt to.

So happy you found a solution for yourself Alicia! Small victories eh?!

I Googled Dummies Guide to Dentures but didn't find anything. That's what I needed and still do!

As an aspiring author I shouldn't have stood anything lol

I found a product on youtube that I am willing to try for a soft reline, but, first, I need to get rid of the taste of my new dentures. I'm letting them soak in baking soda to see if that helps.  I saw that on youtube also. The reline I'm looking to use has not odor of taste to it. Lots of good information for denture wearers on youtube. Just type in denture help. So far I've found Margaret, Donna and Bill Westlund.

Hi I had my old dentures replaced after 15 years. It has been a long journey with the new ones this is the sexond pair they have made me this has been going on for 8 months. The new second pair feels like I am wearing mouth guards they are so thick I have had ulcers for 8 months I can't eat properly. I have had that many adjustments it's not funny any more I'm over it. I have a horrible taste in my mouth like sovent or something I mentioned it to the guy I'm seeing and I believe it is the plastic they use to make the dentures. I told the guy that I am going to see another denture place for a second opinion.

I found that the liquid and powder reliners make me sick. I've decided I'm allergic to it. My stomach starts burning and I get nauseous and diarrhea. The foul odor and taste never diminishes for me. I had to throw out the soaking cup I was using because it also absorbed the odor.

I spent over twenty years working in a beauty salon. Acrylic nail material was originally used in the dental industry. The liquid monomer used in denture relining material and for acrylic nails are both made of methacrylate. The liquid monomer continues to leach out until it is totally cured. The lining material will get harder over time (weeks/months) as the liquid monomer cures. So it continues to leach out until then.

I have tried a silicone based reliner (Densurefit) and it's great. No odor or taste and no feeling ill. I hope your problem is resolved and things are going well
