Bottom extraction site very swollen and painful feels like part of a tooth is sticking out?

Either I still have a tooth in there or my jaw is exposed!! My husband took a flashlight and thinks it is my jaw bone exposed, the swelling goes back and forth. I don't go see the oral surgeon until July 5th should I call and go see him now?

Heidi I would definitely call and go back asap. I would think ur wounds should b closing and shouldn't have any bone exposed. Also sum times slivers of teeth r left and come to the surface and out on their own or need to b removed from what I hear. I didn't have that but others on here have talked about it. I would also think most of ur swelling should b over too so for sure call ur dentist and get in.

Heidi: Small pieces of bone sticking out from the gums are relatively common following extractions. I had a number of them in the 3 or 4 weeks following the last extractions. Some came out easily, some caused significant pain. All of them eventually worked themselves out. The dentist tried to help me a couple of times, but the thing I found most valuable was - after at least 10 days had passed following the last extractions - was gently brushing my gums and frequent salt water rinses from extraction day on.

Clearly, it could be something else, but the pain I experienced in 2 or 3 places - especially with the denture in - made me cringe each morning when I had to put the denture back in. But it passed, and I still find small pieces of bone emerging that don't really cause pain. The bottom line is this: It will pass for you too, but I would not be reluctant to get your dentist's thoughts and assistance as soon as possible. Good luck with everything. Joseph

I wouldnt worry I had same thing happen to me. They told me it was parts of my teeth that sometimes dont come out with the tooth. They all work their way out. I just kept wiggling them with my tounge till they came loose enough to fall out. Good luck it gets better

Every other extraction site has healed fine but this one is the one that would not hold a blood clot so the dentist packed it with something and it finally clotted. No other part of my mouth is swollen but this one on the bottom in the back and it is so tender to even try and touch it with my tongue hurts like hell!! My neighbor is a nurse and she is pretty sure it is actually a portion of my jaw bone exposed! Going to oral surgeon in the am!!

Had one of those myself Heidi. Lower back. Dentist kept insisting soreness and I knew better because the pain was too sharp. Last night, after 25 days of hell, the end of the bone shard poked through the surface and I was able to flick the unbelievably small thing out with a fingernail and the relief was amazing.

I really hope it is only a bone shard! This pain is ridiculous! I had all of my upper teeth surgically removed and five on the bottom very little if any swelling on top. Only the one side on the bottom swelled up on me. Hopefully the surgeon will just remove it if that what it is.

Well went to my dentist yesterday and without doing an X-ray he said he is pretty sure it is my jaw bone exposed!! But because he didn't do the extraction the oral surgeon did he didn't want to touch it but he didn't give me some numbing stuff to put on it until I see the surgeon today because they were closed yesterday. Thank god for the numbing stuff, it doesn't hurt now. Can't wait to see the surgeon today!!

The whole reasoning I went with the oral surgeon was I hate needles and I wouldn't have to feel them or see them !! I have literally passed out when I seen them before!! So now I'm probably going to have to be numbed with a needle and this is what I tried to avoid

Well try and stay positive! Let's not think of the worst. You may just need more healing time in that specific area if the bone is exposed. Don't freak yourself out!

Well , no needles the surgeon said that the bottom gums are very thin and when a tooth is pulled it can tear it. Usually your gum will heal over it. He wants me to wait the full four weeks to see if it will grow over it because it is still swollen on that side. And the extra gum that is there and feels like a mushy marble will likely go down . He did give me a prescription for
Chlorhexidine rinse so that no infection starts. But all the swelling in the rest of my mouth is gone except for that bottom left side? It just seems weird that the one side hasn't healed properly.

I hope he is right. It sounds strange that the rest of the gums are healing except for that one spot. What I was wondering until the bone chip finally poked through.

Keep us posted. This stuff ain't fun but the support here is great going through it.

It can happen Heidi. We are all unique in our own way and our mouths can definitely take some time to heal. NO NEEDLES!!! WOOT WOOT! Glad to hear. Just be careful with that sensitive area and continue with salt water as well.

Now the exposed jaw bone has grown out to almost a half of an inch and is so sore and keeps swelling!! My next appointment is on July 5th with the oral surgeon! This is scary!! When I eat I immediately go rinse my mouth!! I have lost 17 lbs. I'm hoping the surgeon will fix this. Can I put some kind of oral cream on it to stop the pain?

Your appt is tmro!!! I really hope it goes well and they can help you get some relief. Honestly I think in the mean time you shouldn't put any oral creams on it. Continue with the salt water and maybe try and gently massage around that area. It might give you a little relief. You know....sometimes if we actually put a little pressure it feels good. Try that. Be gentle though! Good luck tmro.

Well I have to have oral surgery again!! Apparently I have very thin gums and my jaw is abnormal on the left side so they have to go in and shave down and adjust my jaw on the left side. The oral surgeon said that this is considered a cosmetic procedure only usually seen in about 5% of people! Of course, I'm part of that 5%!! Lol

Hey Heidi. Sorry to hear that you need more alveoplasty done but on a good note it's getting taken care of. If he said "cosmetic" make sure you know if it's covered under insurance or not so you don't get any surprises. Hope that will finally get you on track to a happy smile.

The surgery is scheduled for next Thursday, July 13th and my insurance covers only a portion of it but my surgeon said that they will take whatever my insurance will pay as full payment !! Thank goodness because we can't afford to shell out over $5000 for this procedure. He said he wanted to make sure that I can smile and eat again properly. This surgeon is awesome!! I knew something was very wrong with the left side of my lower jaw it was constantly swelling up and painful to the touch even on the outside. So hopefully this fixes it!! I'm already down 3 sizes since I started this journey!

Yeah I'm sure you're pretty sore. Try and take it easy. Rest always is the key. Maybe some arnica gel on the outside of your surgery area and do the salt water rinse as many times a day as you can. You're finally on the road to recovery. :) Things will start looking up again.

Tooth shards are totally normal and they will work themselves out. But if you feel like something is wrong then trust your gut!
