Day 3 post extractions & immediate dentures

I had a total of 10 teeth extracted 3 days ago and have a new upper denture and a partial lower denture. I really feel like I am doing better than I originally expected. Aside from some sore spots and my speech, I feel like I have gained a ton of confidence with my new smile! I have always had horrible teeth and always said that I would have dentures by the time I was 40.... well, I am 42 and this has been a long time coming. My dentist told me to keep them in overnight the first night, but that I could take them out the next night (which would have been last night). However, I have not taken them out yet because I am terrified that I wont be able to put them back in. I had them put in on a Thursday afternoon, and it is now Saturday morning. I know that I should take them out and rinse them off, and give my mouth a rinse with salt water. Has anyone else had any trouble with getting dentures back in after taking them out for the first time?

I was afraid to take my uppers out aswell for the same reason but on the second night i bit the bullet and took them out .Was a bit worried about putting them back in after giving them a clean next morning but they slipped right back on without any trouble.

Thank you for your response! I think I will try taking them out some time this morning for a good rinse and salt water rinse. My mouth feels a bit "dirty" and stinky LOL

Oral hygiene is still important.  I still brush my tongue and gums.  For you at this point, warm salt water rinses should take care of that gross feeling.

I had the same problem.  Took me a day or so to get the confidence to take them out long enough for a rinse, but it does wonders for the dirty feeling.  As far as leaving them out at night, it took me about a week before I slept without them.

I slept without them for the first time lastnight.... didn't like the feeling of not having teeth. I swear it almost gave me an anxiety attack!

I know exactly what you mean.  I still dont particularly care for that feeling, but my mouth does feel better in the morning having let it rest without the dentures.

You're doing fine by the sounds of it.  Congratulations!

When I woke up this morning, my upper lip felt swollen, and it hurt a bit putting my upper denture back in. However, I have been fine most of the day with just some ibuprofen. My mom told me that she always sleeps with her upper denture in because she always hated the feeling of going to sleep with no teeth

Day 3/4 were the worst for a lot of folks.  I swelled like a balloon and got real unhappy, real fast.  Ibu, a couple of the good painkillers, ice and lots of water helped me through it.

Yes I agree TJ. I had my only remaining 7 upper teeth extracted one week ago today. I am so glad I was able to take a week off work!! Days 3-4 Are the Worse! Even after 2 Tylenol PMs I was up 3 hours later in terrible pain! I have found that if I take my teeth out to eat soft foods, it's better... As your gums shrink daily and even with adhesive, they move:(. Now if I can just learn to talk... Lol I'm a bartender and I can't mime;). Does anyone have problems with the lower molars touching the top gums when you sleep??

I repeated the TV when I was alone for a couple days - it helped a ton in learning to talk again.  Its been 3 months for me and I finally feel like I'm back to normal, but I do have to talk a bit slower.

Brenda, I'm doing fine if you were asking me - can't speak for anyone else :)
Just passed my 1 year anniversary last week and I'm doing really well - Overdue for a reline, but other than that it's smooth sailing!

The first few days post-surgery can be rough, especially that 3rd or 4th day.  After that, it was all downhill for me.  Learning to speak and eat again took some time, but once I was healed enough to use adhesives it came back pretty well.

Foodwise, I'd say I'm better than I was with a mouthful of bad teeth...and the scale agrees with me, unfortunately.

You got this!
