denture problems

Had 26 teeth extracted and am going to be doing the snap of on dentures. Am currently wearing temp dentures for four months until all the swelling goes down. Had the dental work done in Tijuana and I live in Nebraska so cant run to the surgeon every time I feel sores or pain. I am three weeks into this and hate the feeling of all of the dentures in my mouth feels like I have such a mouth full and I can’t chew and sore spots . I am hoping that the permanent snap on dentures don’t feel so bulky and hoping they won’t move around so much and can’t help but think I am never going to be able to chew bite or eat food again. Please tell me this gets better please

It does get better! My immediate dentures were/are my permanent dentures. And I only ever went one time to get a sore spot adjusted at my dental office. A second time I adjusted the spot myself which I probably wouldn't recommend but its what I did.

I went through a period of regret because it felt like it was never going to get better and I was so hungry but couldn't eat much of anything. You're relearning to chew and eat so that does take some time. But eventually you will get to the point you can chew better, talk better and the teeth will sit better in your mouth once swelling starts to subside.

At 3 months I was able to eat mostly anything I wanted. While everyone's personal situation is different it does get better.

Well Aminadav, I know exactly what you are saying.! It is embarrassing when they keep asking me what I said!! The dentist never helped with this problem so I starting reading into a recorder and playing it back. It helped some but I am far from speaking clearly!!

Yes indeed Linda I start my morning off while i am ironing my clothes in the morning for work by talking and counting or reading something out loud as I work on the slur issue. That's a splendid ideal reading into a recorder, i have a recorder app on my phone ill try that so I can hear myself speaking... Thanks for the ideal..

Someone else suggested singing. My speech, for the most part, is fine now. I think it is just practice.

I will get permanents in about 4 months, but I do think my gums are about done shrinking, so I wil, have 2 nice sets pf teeth at that point, I think the dentist felt bad that I spent all the major holidays and my birtbday without teeth because of mistakes she made so she finally topk the time to make it right, these could be my perms but I paid a lot of money for temps and my inzurance will pay for another set so Im going to take advantage of that and have both sets to swap out every other day, I love fostering, I have saved 200 dogs either from craigs list, off facebook, or strait out of the kill shelter, the sweet guy I have now was on death row they were 1 hour from euthanizing him so I got bim out of there and cross your fingers ladies, a nice couple of ladies are coming to meet him on zat. He has been with me a month and he is a great dog Im so happy I saved him and he is getting a second chance, I named him Ryder. Kristy, Im so glad your doing well, I eat better without teeth as well, but time to suck it up and really start trying, my goal for next month is to make 8 hours per day at the minimum with them in and to eat at least zoft fopds like pancakes pr scrambled eggs with ham. Maybe a cheeseburger from McDonalds cut up small OMG SOUNDS SO GOPD AND SOME FRIES IM SO HUNGRY ALL THE TIME LOL all 95 pounds of me at 53 yrs old ughhhh Take care Ladies I love this group by the way You All are Great

When I got my temporaries I forced myself to accept them, so for the first four days after extraction I kept them in only taking them out in the morning to clean them and put them right back in. I forced myself to eat past the pain and I ate everything from oatmeal to brisket! Doing so will cause your gums to heal much quicker and toughen up alot faster and that is why after day four I no longer need any medications whatsoever and I have screws in my jaw as well. You have to force yourself to keep them in regardless of the pain and discomfort in all honesty! Its been three weeks for me and Im eating whatever I want including fried chicken thou I tend to break everything into small pieces, im eating barbacoa beef, burgers, fries, whatever I want just slower of course as these temporary plastic teeth don't shred well. I use peroxide and mouthwash twice a day, take vitamins and have regained all the weight just about that I lost initially in this process. So everyone that I know who has dentures told me what I am telling you now and it is true... If you remove your dentures because you are hurting it is going to take you twice as long to heal and adjust and eat, i like eating so I just dealt with the pain and discomfort and now I haven't any after about a month.

Kimmy you are really important on this site

You are important because you are getting the snap on dentures

and you are important because you went to Mexico

W need to follow your journey

Snap on's are the real next step for denture  wearers so we need to know how much you paid and where you went and how you picked this dentist out?

If you break the costs down that would be a big help.  How much were the extractions and then how much are the implants and the full final snap on's???

How many implants are you getting for the snap on??

Are they full implants or are they mini implants??

Can you go to any denture lab here and have them help you for some adjustments???

Can you call the dentist in Mexico?

Have the implants been put in Yet??

Do not stop writing to us because we need all your imput

You should be fine.    When  are you returning???

Good luck

Barbara

Barbara my son said he thought I was courageous. He said he really admired the fact that I would go to whatever lengths to get what I needed and that I am so brave to go do this. I took my chance and was reassured that I would be safe in Tijuana and I felt trust with the Downtown Dental Clinic and their staff. So I went for it

Barbara I just got online and just started looking up dental tourism and inquired to probably five different dental clinics. But after speaking to consultant name Gabriel from Downtown Dental Clinic and receiving their quote I just knew they were my best choice. I spoke about my fears about my budget about how safe would I be going alone and about the dentist credentials. He emailed me the dentist credentials and gave me the background information on Dr.Jacobsen and assured me things were going to be good for me. The only one that knew I was going was my sixteen year old daughter and I gave her all the information and phone numbers flight itinerary etc in case something did happen to me. And trust me I was alittle scared about never coming back but I knew in my heart I had no choice I had to have my teeth done and I knew that regular dentures wasn’t going to work for me . I knew I had you have the stability of the snap on dentures. I am telling you you need to get with Downtown Dental Clinic and have them help you with all your dental denture needs. I am promising you it will change your life.

Hi Kimmy, it does get better in time. I am three months into having my temporaries, and I still can't seem to chew quite yet, but I am able to eat a lot more than I could in the beginning. I find that it is actually easier to eat without my temps in (although, when I try to chew out of habit, a wave of depression hits me). But I tell myself that I am no longer in pain and already feeling more confident about my smile, I am not hiding it like I used to. You are strong and will get through this! Sorry I hit the wrong key. LOL. years and they are finally tolerable but I wish they were better. I agree after about 6 hours I can’t wait to take them out. The bottoms are fine but I still feel all that plastic on the roof of my mouth. I also think that is causes things to taste different not as much flavor. I would love to get implants on the top but I have heard that they are very expensive. I am wondering if Mexico might offer me hope. If you can find a dentist to adjust your dentures some that will relieve the sore spots. Please keep us posted.
Take Care Kimmy!

About your top de nture
Why don't you call your dentist and go in and tell him the tops are driving you crazy and can  he make them thinner or do something  better  to improve them for you because you are very unhappy with them as they now are

I have many times!! He even did a hard feline at 1 year, but of course it cost me more money! I have gone back many times and no improvement! He tells me that it is because I have so much bone left. Sounds like he should have sent me to an oral surgeon for the extractions but now it is too late.

Hi Linda
I don't know if you are up to it but
If it is within a 2 year limit you can tell him you are unhappy with the way the top fits and unless he can do something for you  then you  will sue him  (look up demand letter to a dentist on the internet)
OR
if it is more then 2 years you can tell him you are going to   go to the   Dental society  (you can complain to the society  much over 2 years)

You can tell him this first over the phone (or leave a message on his answer machine)   if you like and then send the demand letter if he does nothing for you
You should get some remedy from him

I know everyone is different (I had compared my denture tops to my grandmas and my top denture was considerably thinner than my grandmas top denture which was pretty thick) I believe the difference for myself in getting use to my dentures and learnjng to eat is that I never (and still do not) take them out only to clean them and let them soak. Then I put them right back in. It was hell for a while. I had some sore spots that drove me crazy but in order to adjust I kept them in. I actually even sleep with mine in because I hate the feeling of them being out.

At 4 months I was eating everything I wanted even potatoe chips, burgers etc. I'm almost a year with full dentures and I get an occasional sore spot but most days I dont even feel them in my mouth or forget about them.

The name of the dentist is Downtown Dental Clinic in Tijuana Mexico. The dentist is dr. Jacobsen and if you call this number 1-619-675-7707 and speak to Gabriel. He will give you all the information you need. I have not been to a dentist here in my city because I really am not done with the whole process yet and I don’t feel like I need to see a dentist for anything. I fully trust Dr. Jacobsen and his team , he is very good and they keep in constant contact with me . So in July I go to get permanent snap on dentures. And after that I am planning on going back once a year to Dr. Jacobsen to have them checked. I don’t regret the decision I made to go to Tijuana for my dental care it was a great choice and I only spent $4600.00 or somewhere around there and in the USA it would of cost me probably 10,000 usd or more for snap on dentures. Give Gabriel a call and tell him Kim Hanson referred you . You will be so happy that you made the call this I promise

When I got the implants they did not have the choices they have now  They did not have clip os and they did not have all on 4 etc etc
I knew I could not handle dentures.   I did have dental insurance that covered about  half my  cost so I did it.
I had no additional expenses with them and it was all good.
I feel everyone should have clip on's at the minimun and not have to handle dentures.   I  think it is sad that implants  are so expensive   and  going to Mexico was a wonderful solution for you

Yes, this will get better!

I've been in to see a dentist many times since December 28th, when all of my teeth were extracted and I got my temp dentures. The best thing you can ask a dentist with an in-house denture service is for a soft liner. They put some gel in your dentures to help with the fit and with the comfort of your dentures against your gums. Without soft liners, I never would have made it to today where I finally have my permanent teeth - and they look beautiful!

Hang in there, all of you. It's a journey and this group was sometimes the only way I would get up the courage in the first couple days to take my dentures out despite the excruciating pain.

So, yeah, hang in there. You can make it and it does get better!! Just for funsies, here's a pick of my brand new perm dentures!! Amazing!

Which reline did you get? Was it from the dentist or one of the at home relines. The one that I received was from the dentist office so I am not certain if what the dentist use per say to the various at home relines that are available as Perma Soft, Cushion Grip, Pro soft, Reline it, Acryline, Code soft, Tokuyama, Dura rely a soft all sold on ebay are the same as whatever one they did at the dentist office. The one thing that I discovered from the dentist is once you get a reline done, you can no longer soak your dentures overnight in the effervescent cleaners as it denigrates the reline. You can use the efferverscent solution with soap to clean them, then the dentures must sit in a dry bath. Alot of peoples relines don't last because they soak there dentures at night in the effervescent solution that pulls the reline off. So Im looking for a small lid that I can use to pour the effervescent solution and sit the denture in so the liquid covers just the denture teeth and denture gum without touching the reline, that way I obtain removal of all germs and bacteria without a concern for the reline coming or denigrating off the denture itself. Hopefully that bit of info helps my denture family.... Love yall and we are going to make it

Yep they don't tell people that after you get a reline rather one at home or at the dentist office that you can no longer soak your dentures in the effervescent solution as it will disintegrate the rubber, lining that sticks to the denture plate. If they would tell people this, even a temporary reline is suppose to last three months an dental office reline abit longer than that. Some have lasted for up to a year with people who don't soak there dentures overnight and just clean them, brush them, run water over them and place them in a dry bath then the rubberized lining wont lift, peel or disintegrate. Atleast if your purchase any of the over the counter brands I mentioned: Perma Soft, Cushion Grip, Pro soft, Reline it, Acryline, Code soft, Tokuyama, Dura rely a soft if you do it yourself which you can then you know not to soak them at all... But Im thinking of getting a saucer or plastic bowl top and using that, about one inch of the effervescent solution to soak on the denture teeth and gum without touching where the lining is so I can effectively kill bacteria and keep the teeth clean and germ free and keep my reline for as long as possible. My wife calls me Mcgivver ill come up with an ideal for sure....

OK Linda let me know how it works out for you and it should certainly last alot longer atleast three months. I also know of a brand that is industrial which is used in dental offices that is sold on ebay if you want that name, thou it cost more, you can do it yourself at home. Because when this one that I have wears away that is exactly what I am going to do, i am not spending two or three hundred dollars for a reline that I can do myself. I saw how they do it, they pour it and you immediately place it in your mouth for three minutes to cure it and set a gum molding with it and then after it cures, sets they trim off the excess, rinse it and it is set- well for alot less we can do it ourselves.

Thanks Linda we are in this together... It has been such a blessing finding, discovering this denture group community as coming through this process has been a long, arduous, difficult decision and it is such a blessing having a support group of people who are going through the same thing. I was so frustrated, depressed, anxious, broken after getting my teeth extracted at 48 years old. Thou they were crooked, gaps, loose and messed up. Having to wear dentures at 48 I wasn't mentally prepared for, i mean I thought long ago that dentures were for old retired, grandpa and grandma people. However after undergoing this experience with time I have come to appreciate everything in the process including having the dentures, with this appreciation having you all on here along with the fact that there are countless people out here dealing with major dental issues who just don't have the funds to even afford basic, economy dentures, so we must count our blessings, be appreciative for what we have, accept this new aspect of life and keep our heads up with motivation, optimism, fellow support and strength as we are not alone. Whoever is responsible for creating this website and forum may God bless!

Yes Aminadav this site is great! Although I signed up for it at the time of my extractions and didn’t go on it much, it seemed to be kind of a waste of time. Maybe it was new then or a different type of people were on then. There didn’t seem to be true honesty or helpful information. So glad that I signed on last week, what a difference. Yes we do have to count our blessings, i feel bad for the ones who can’t afford dentures and probably a lot of the time that is why they need them in the first place. My mom got dentures at a young age, although she did well with them! I remember her always saying take care of your teeth, you don’t want dentures! I now see what she meant. I used to be a smoker which didn’t help my teeth, then after all of my surgery’s i was so many prescription drugs that were also harmful to my teeth. I know that it is nice to talk to other denture wearers and hear their problems. It helps with some possible solutions to your own problems.
Take Care.

Yes indeed Linda thanks. Me having to have dentures is due to me being born with a thyroid issue and pituitary disease so its nothing I could do to prevent it or stop it. I am definitely get the snap on implants for the top as well by June- that should make life abit easier without the hockey puck palate being at the top. You take care as well my friend.

I've never used secure, Cushion grip is a reline so tell me how it goes and how it works and if it is effective when it arrives. I am using dynarex denture adhesive which is sold on ebay. Its abit more industrial- it sells for $5.00 dollars for a 2 oz tube. It has a all day hold and cleans up at night abit easier as far as peeling off the gunk in my opinion. Tell me Joan how the Cushion Grip reline works for you I am interested as if it does work for you ill order it for myself. At present I have just received a week ago a reline from the dentist office which should last for a couple months. Just remember when you do your reline that thereafter you can not soak your dentures overnight in the effervescent cleaning solution as it will dissolve and disintegrate your reline- i learned that from my dentist office.

Yes indeed Joan that's exactly what I was told by several at the dentist office including the dentist and the technicians or assistants. The effervescent will dissuade and disintegrate the reline causing it to not last nearly as long as it is suppose too so what one has to do is use the effervescent solution with the denture toothbrush and abit of liquid soap and brush them and then put them in a dry bath, your denture container as it, i put a small towel in the denture container. Otherwise the reline won't last that long as the effervescent bath will lift the reline.

I found Dynarex on ebay, it isn't sold in stores and apparently can only be purchased at there website, on ebay, amazon and perhaps at medical supply companies. I have presently settled on it only because it has a strong all day bond, retention and is abit easier to clean up at night. Not to mention it is alittle more affordable than the main name brands.

Well Nancy I'll tell you I think so, Fixodent never worked for me and it never held the denture in place all day. The off generic brands like dollar general generic brand of polygrip didn't work, the sea bond didn't hold for no time at all. The only one that works and worked well for me was and has been the super polygrip however cleaning it at night has been tolesome as it creates a rubber binding effect which is difficult to remove and takes up alot of time with towels, mouthwash, peroxide, hot water etc. So far the Dynarex is doing what I need, being its giving me retention and a strong hold. I mean I had last night per removing my dentures to clean after all day use still a tight tight grip. The Dynarex cleans and dislodges rather easy at clean time with less of a greasy grimmy feel in my opinion. Another great incentive has been for me I ordered two tubes and they gave me two more tubes for free so I can't beat the deal... I mean we are all under a budget HAHA

Interestingly you don't hear or see any promotional anything about Dynarex Denture Adhesive and there arent any reviews on the product that I have found whatsoever, sort of a hidden gem and it cost abit less that the national traditional brands that are out here... One obviously cant purchase it at a regular store but I wonder if it can be purchased at the local area medical supply stores I am certain it can. However I'll just continue ordering it ahead of time on ebay, i am the ebay king for just about everything HAHA
