Does anyone else have the problem of constantly messing with their partial.

I got my upper partial early spring of this year (2015). Every since I got them I find myself constantly running my tongue across the plate or just biting down for no reason. It fits great and I dont have much if any movement in my plate. Ive just noticed Im just always (playing) with it somehow. Im really trying to break this habit. Its not causing any real problems I was just wondering if anyone else does this.

Hi Joe!

What you are describing is perfectly normal, and the length of time varies per person. Even though your partial is staying in place, it still requires the the ability to hold them with the muscles of your lips, cheeks, and tongue. There is a normal tendency for your tongue and muscles to feel like they are larger in your mouth, possibly give you a full mouth feeling, or even that your lips are being pushed forward.

All of this is common, and as long as you are not moving them, causing them to dislodge, there isn't  an issue and your desire to do this shouldn't last forever. You may help speed things along if you actually swallow more often to remove any excess saliva. You might want to suck on a mint or hard candy to get yourself swallowing more frequently. Please stop back and let us all know how it is going. Thanks!

I really dont have the full mouth feeling at all to be quite honest my partial actually really feels natural in my mouth with the exception of the plate across the roof of my mouth so maybe thats why I mess with it so much. My top plate only covers the front part of my mouth. My dentist said it was due to me having a high pallet? Im assuming she was referring to the roof of my mouth. Anyway I think my biggest concern was the biting down on them which it the main habit I want to break.

Hi Joe,
Yes I too find myself biting down on my dentures, or pushing on my uppers with my tongue. One of  my coworkers had noticed me doing it, and asked me about it. Since then I catch myself doing it. Trying to stop.

I got a full set back in mid-June, and I find myself constantly biting down or pushing on the top of my upper plate.  Maddening!

Glad to hear I am not the only one. The biting down I am really working on trying not to do it so much. What a habit to break. I have come to find out I tend to run my tongue over my plate mainly when my mouth starts to get a little dry. Maybe that has something to do with it. Good luck!

Clarence & Joe, so is this getting any better with time? It sounds like Janet is at the beginning of where you two were a few months ago. In addition to the tips I gave above, do you two have anything to add that may help Janet right now? Thanks!

I a a full upper partial on the uppper right were a Bridge was and 4 lower partial two on each side. The lower teeth doesn't bother me but ever since I got the upper . I have told the dentist over and over again I lisp with this top partial , my speech to me is terrible compared to how I talk without out them or with my former teeth. the roof of my mouth to me is thicker , it does not conform at all or narrow down to the roof of my mouth. They are too thick but the dentist partial maker never corrects it .....or comment about it just says it will take awhile to get used to them
So , I like the Joe, am constantly biting down on them and my tongue keeps touching the partial which makes me so aware of having something coating the roof of my mouth , like having bubble gum interfering with my speech...........it drives me nuts ........
If I swallow it just makes my tongue touch the inside edges of where it is placed > I had insurance at the time I got these in June 2016 . The dentist got $2200 I paid out of pocket $720. of the $2200. He said if I do not get my teeth cleaned every six months he will not guarantee my partials for 5 years and I he also said after 90 days they will not remake them .Hence, I can't go back to him or anyone to fix them He charges like all dentists do $83 for the dental hygienist plus full mouth xrays and then the dentist charges $92 for the oral exam......
We are all screwed if you ask me.......I am retired now and living on SS.
The lab did forget to put a 4th tooth in on the first complaint the day I got them and the dentist had the lab guy remake them but then I couldn't get the lowers in or out they were so tight without cutting into my lower gums .I went back twice for that and at the same time kept telling him that I was lisping but of course he it takes a while to get used to....
Then the return visit is when the dentist said get your teeth cleaned every six months or we will not guarantee these partials.......
I am wondering if they didn't use my impressions and just bought some parials off a truck and ground them down to fit me?????????? does that ever happen? $2200 is alot of money to me and most full set of dentures don't cost this much do they and I never heard anyone with a full set of dentures have this trouble......talking or having a nervous habit to push with their tongue to get this thick piece of something off the roof of my mouth!  LOL...I would like to know if anyone can tell me If their partials interfere with them in speaking or talking .......thanks .

I am new to a full set of dentures and use my tongue to push the uppers.  It is annoying to my mouth and I feel as if I talk funny.  I can't wear them all day as they drive me nuts.
