Getting full top and partial denture in eight hours immediately after extraction

At Aspen Dental at 7:30am on 4/11/18.
I have a mix of emotions, fear of the pain from new dentures, fear of not being able to communicate properly when I return to work on Friday 4/13/18 @ 7:30am... Yes, I am aware that it's Friday the thirteenth, I am not superstitious but concerned it may be too soon. My dentist office said I needed to be off from work for only 48 hours... so that is all I requested to be off.
Has anyone gone back to work so soon? How long does it take to be able to speak "normally"? Is there a lot of saliva having the new dentures in... do I need to wear a bib at work?? Any suggestions regarding coping, specific over the counter pain medication that I can take while at work. Thank you for your time and input.

Hi Jennifer
Yes I think it is too early to return to work
Call your office and tell them you are too sick to come in Friday
If you have discomfort make sure you return to the dentist office before you return to work
and insist on an adjustment
Drink lots of seltzer and see what other people recommend that you eat and drink
Let us know about your progress so other people will know what to expect
Keep in touch
Good luck

Hi Jennifer, you are in good hands with Aspen Dental! We do not have the time to discuss all that they have helped me with! And Lisa! OMG, the best! Everyone is different with pain and the time it takes to heal and those two go hand in hand! Ask the Dentist in the AM to give you off, usually a week! Because if you feel better before then at least you will be covered with a doctors excuse!  The first 2 to 3 days will be ice, ice ice and little 4x4 guaze and packing to handle the bleeding! Ask also in the am to write down what you should take for pain. They will have all this done for you! But always have a question list made out for them to answer before you leave! They are really great! I used ice pack for days and drank icy drinks. The ice helps stop the bleeding and stops the pain! But take what they want you to take!   There are some meds that cause bleeding and that would not be good, so go by their list and instructions! Try to get some rest!! I know that is hard but it really will do you good, you are in excellent hands, donna curley!

From the internet:
 Implant Supported Dentures:
  • Provide tremendous support and fixation so you can comfortably speak, chew, and smile.
  • Keep your upper and lower jaw bone from receding which prevents facial shape changes like the “shrunken” look.
  • Perfect option for patients with dentures who do not want to go through the expense required for individual tooth implants

Patricia Meyer:
Patricia are you sure your insurance will pay nothing toward  the implants???
Do  they just pay for the denture??
My insurance (when I had it)   also did not pay for my implants but they did give me some money toward everything else like the crowns and extractions etc

The over denture can have as few as 2 implants and I don't
think they need crowns?

Most  people have the most difficulty  with the bottom denture because they float.  So they will  pay for the bottom denture and end up not being able to use it at all
I am not saying that will happen to you.

Most of us  pay for cable TV and cell service for years which ends up costing much more then an over denture or clip on

Dental colleges are usually a good way to go cost wise with implants

Why don't you  take a look at the actual cost of a bottom over denture and make sure it is out of reach

What ever you do I certainly wish you well
Good luck

Do you have a partial bottom denture?
If so I think the bottom should be perfect.
If so that sounds fine for the bottom

Barbara, my insurance will not pay for any implants and Im on disability, I have already borrowed money for the temporary denture I was supposed to be able to wear 5 months ago, I have an appt tomorrow at affordable dentures and Im going to beg the dentist to make me a horseshoe upper so I have teeth to put in my mouth, I dont care if I cant eat with them I JUST WANT TEETH LOL So I am about to use a credit card I cant afford to use but Im so desperate right now. I am praying that they will make it for me. and I can wear that out to appts and when I see my dad. I had horrible headaches after an hour of wearing the denture. I dont know if its from the palate, thats my main reason for wanting the horseshoe denture.

OK that might work for you

If they won't do it perhaps your first
dentist will make some adjustment like a thinner pallet or a shorter pallet that might permit you  to wear the current denture

Perhaps you can move around your credit cards or find a credit card company that will let you transfer over your balance   without penalty to a new card with  a better rate or a special
You are being creative and trying every thing so something will work

Barbara, if they wont make it then I will be going online to get one. You would think they would be happy to take my money especially since I am willing to agree that they are not responsible for the fit. I can do my own relines and small adjustments so that is another option, it just will take a lot longer before I have teeth. This forum has helped so much and I am really grateful for all and any input. Wish me luck for tomorrow hopefully I can come home with what I want or at least an appointment to get what I want.

I was in a similar situation. I will say everyone is different. I would agree take the Friday off. That will give you at least tell Monday. I felt great the first 2 days. I thought wow what a breeze the the 3rd day hit. My gums swelled a !of and I was unable to wear my dentures for several days. I found it very hard to talk, my husband said I sounded like I had a retainer in. Some spots were even still bleeding. I would say don't plush it. Not sure what you do for work but talking all day might not be easy. I am 2 weeks and 2 days out and am talking better but eating is still very hard, its either soup or something easy to chew. I would tell your boss that it might be a day by day for a bit. Since you have no idea how YOU are going to feel be cautious. I am so glad I had my teeth pulled and immediate dentures. I was so scared and nervous about pain etc.
Not 1 regret, my mouth was so infected I didn't realize how much the rest of my body was being effected. Best decision ever. Remember take your time don't force getting better. Good luck

I agree with everyone else. I had my teeth pulled a long time ago but I remember it as if it were today. The one thing they told me to do was to try my hardest to wear my denture. It helps in stopping the bleeding and helps you to not get what is called a dry socket. . A dry socket iis wherr the blood clot comes out of the hole where your tooth came out of. It leaves a dry hole which is very painful. Its caused from sucking. Like sucking through a straw, or smoking, or going without your teeth because you automatically get a sucking motion in your mouth without your denture. . I would recommend wearing your teeth. If it becomes to painful, which mine didnt go to you dentist for adjustment. A dry socket hurts worse then a abcessed tooth. I would at least take a week off. I would eat soups, soft food and get yourself some ensure for nutrition. Also ibuprofen helps with pain. Just remember and think about how beauitiful your gonna look. Go to your happy place. It really doesnt hurt that bad if they numb you right. Take care and God Bless Ask your dentist about a dry socket and how to prevent them.

I did the same thing.  I had 22 pulled at the same time them immediate dentures put in.  I had it done on Thursday and went back to work on Monday.  I did just fine. Everybody is different.  Talking was weird for awhile. Didn't have a big issue with saliva.  I kept my dentures in for the first 2 days all the time until the dentist removed them and cleaned my gums good and put them back in.  The first few months I was thinking I had made a mistake but it got better.  I am 2 years out and doing great.  I am on my permanent dentures now a year this month.  It took alot of adjustments over the time but things are good now. I tried to wear mine all the time but my jaws get tired and even sore sometimes so I take them out at night. You will become a pro before you know it.  Just hang in there and dont give up.  It definately gets better.

I had 17 extractions and immediate dentures on Friday, March 23, 2018. I work in an office where I am on the phone all day long. I returned to work Monday, March 26, 2018. I did have a little difficulty with the s sound. Everyone else said I sounded fine but I think you hear it so much more inside your own head... if that makes sense. Take ibuprofen and drink lots. I think you will be fine, but everyone is different. I am on day 18 and am truly amazed at how well I have adapted. I was told after my extractions that I could use powdered adhesive and that it would not disturb the stitches. So that's what I did and it helped alot. Practice talking and singing. Say your words slowly and deliberately and you will get the hang of it. Wishing you much luck.

I had my extractions on a Thursday. I took Friday, Monday and Tuesday off and returned on Wednesday. You may not sleep well the night you have the extractions done and the meds they give you may make you sleepy.  On E day there was a lot of saliva but I was pretty numbed but the next day when the feeling returned, I could control the saliva.  Be sure to do your salt water rinses!

Well the extraction went well, all things considered. Had to have a few rounds of extra numbing, so my gums & roof of my mouth are extremely tender... not to mention that it looks like one of my canines were ripped out sideways instead of pulled out as there is a jagged tear going up my gum.
An hour following surgery, on my way home had a bit of an emotional break down. The temps were too big and everytime I talked or opened my mouth they would slip around and easily come out. Called Aspen Dental and they had me come back right away. They said I was supposed to bite down on gauze for 2-4 hours... but no one told me that. The sheet they gave me said "if excessive bleeding" to do that... the young assistant had only been there for four months and did not want to get her in trouble... and I was honestly very nervous and having a difficult time concentrating on anything other than these large foreign objects in my mouth. The tech Megan could have been nicer, instead of telling me I needed to have "realistic expectations" & criticizing my intelligence could have been more understanding that this was all very new for me and understanding that things were obviously NOT explained very well.
Less than a week prior to the surgery, they called me saying the impression had something wrong with it and had to come in right then & there. Explained that I was serving in church and could not just leave. Asked why it took so long for them to figure this out and no one could tell me. So I asked to speak with the manager and talked to Cinderella. She assured me that everything was fine and there was a discrepancy with a tooth which was irrelevant because they were all being removed and told me to disregard. Then after I brought up that I did not like the size of the teeth was blamed because I did not come back in.
I paid for the comfilytes which are the top denture with 7 year warranty. I asked for the temp to be remade because the teeth are half the size of my real teeth and looked funny to me BEFORE any teeth were removed. I was told to talk to the dentist, which I did. They refused and stated I "can be more picky in 6 months - October 2018 - once they make my permanent denture".
Got the same answer from 3 different people including two dentists. I honestly felt like I was promised perfection & satisfaction PRIOR to paying for everything but now that its done, I am just to deal with it and "be realistic". Initially had serious regrets as they looked horribly fake to me.
The first night I was in and out of sleep and lots of pain meds. Thankfully I went to Walmart and got clay icepacks with strap so I could wrap around my head, mouth & jaw while I slept. They were less than $10.00 each, so I got two so one would always be frozen in the freezer.
Yesterday went in for adjustment and they shaved some off due to sore spots. When I asked for different spot to be shaved, she refused and told me to wait a week and if it's still bothering me, she will shave some off then. I understand that my bones will begin to shrink and they do not want to take too much off. I know this is not meant to be a cake walk by any means however the lack of compromise or even attempting to ensure I am happy or even remotely satisfied is beyond disappointing. They get PIF up front so what motivation do they have to make sure I am happy... None! I am not sure what to do or who to talk to... feels like I have hit a dead end and at their mercy to do what they want & when they want with no options or input of my own... needless to say, I am frustrated and tired of being treated like this.
After insurance I am paying $2,811.45 + interest and they are treating me like I should be grateful for what they've done... am I missing something here? Am I being unreasonable?

They should not be treating you like this
You have to make them understand this is unacceptable
Tell them you have spoken to people and have been told that you should ak for your money back
Is any of this cost on a credit card???
Tell them you feel somethng is very wrong and you are going to send them a letter  asking for for a refund

You ill see how they change their tune immeiatly
You said:

"When I asked for different spot to be shaved, she refused and told me to wait a week and if it's still bothering me, she will shave some off then. "

Call them now and tell them the pain is too much and you want to come in now and have them shave  more off NOW

If they are acting this way now and you put up with it they will never do anything right going forward.
If they do not shape up now Get a refund and get out of there.
If you put the money on a charge tell your charge company to put it all in dispute and stop the payment
Let us know how you do

Call your insurance company an tell them you are not getting what you paid for here
Ask them for some assistance
As far as your temps being wrong they must fix them now or they will never get the permanents the way you want them

These people have to take  care of you now or they will never take care of you later
Why are they mistreating you and pushing you around???
You are the customer.

$2,000.00 was applied to Genesis credit and the rest I paid with HSA and cash. I tried that already yesterday and that is when Megan stood in the doorway, with the door open for everyone to hear her telling me to have realistic expectations and how these are not going to be a replacement for real teeth. I wish I knew. No one is listening to me there. When I asked to speak to Cinderella, I was told she was working at the other office. When I called the other Aspen Dental office was told she is on vacation till next week. Then when I asked to speak with the manager there was told I had to work it out with the office where services were rendered.

Jennifer first you have to sit down and deceide what YOU want to do
to be 100% good.

When you figure that out,   all of us on this site will try to help you get what you want and need.
Did you ask Genisis if there was any way they could  assist you?
What is HSA ??
What state do you live in?

Since they are avoiding you
Send them a letter certified and ask them for a refund
That will certainly get their attention and you will see how quickly they suddenly respond
Did you say you have insurance to cover part of this dental work??
Well certainly call you insurance company and tell them you r not getting good dental  care
and you want to get away from these people
Ask if the insurance company has paid them??

Health Savings account. It's taken out of my paycheck each pay period and put on a MasterCard that can be used for medical, dental and vision expenses.
I live in Wisconsin.
I want to be treated with respect and since I paid top of the line dentures, I want top of the line dentures.
I am too sore and still bleeding and don't want to risk another impression until after the risk for dry socket has passed... that would put the icing on this cake to get dry socket

Jennifer listen do me a favor and calm down. There is no real rush right now in less something happens like a dry socket and they refuse to treat you for that. I do want you to know since I use to be a nurse is that id you were to get a dry socket that the ER will help you. What they do is put pain meds and some other stuff on gauze and pack all sockets that are dry. If you end up asking for your money back they will have to pay for the ER visit. Did they use stiches. Your going through enough right now. Take care of you and we will all, especially Barbara help you go forwarded with anything you decised to do. Always remember that a customer is always right. They have there money so they dont care about ethics or anything else. But when your feeling better and your ready will make them know what ethics is all about, and how it feels to return money for a poor job. Im very proud of you for standing up for yourself.
Take care of you and God Bless you

Yes, they stitched them. However a couple are stitched closed and the rest are open and the stitches are very loose... not sure how they are supposed to be.
The dentist saw it yesterday and she did not say anything but I did not know as I had to keep the denture on and that was the first time it was off briefly and then put back on until I got home and rinsed with warm salt water in the morning, before bed and after meals at home.
I sincerely appreciate everyone's support and time to comment.
Thank you,
Jenn

So sorry you are going through this I feel somewhat in the same position as you, I just got 28 extractions and immediate dentures 3 days ago and my top denture teeth are HUGE, i look like a horse when i wear them, they are extremely painful, the teeth lap over my bottom and I cannot even close my mouth while wearing them.. my dentist has offered to make a new top set for me for free but I have to wait close to 2 months, I am an emotional wreck.. just thinking that I either have to go without teeth or go with teeth that look this awful, he tried to reassure me that they did not look " that bad " and that people that didnt know me who not know that these teeth are too big for me, also stating that he has seen worse real teeth, but none of this makes me feel better at all, now I am sitting here with no teeth in, tops or bottoms because the pain is so bad and I cannot see my dentist until Monday and I already know he will not do anything with the current set I have because he has said so. I really hope that all your issues are fixed for you in the right ways. Good Luck

I am so sorry you are in so much pain Jennifer. I do not understand why you would have to wait so long. Unless they want to make sure you are fully healed?
The first day, I cried uncontrollably. Then I was angry. Now I am better, it helps being able to vent on here and talk to people that know what you are going through.
I was very self conscious about the dentures... now I am just thankful I am able to tolerate the pain to keep them in while working with the help of Ibuprophin.
Maybe see on Monday once the swelling goes down, in the dentist office so they can make adjustments so you can wear them while the other set is being made? Its no fun putting them on, but once they are on hopefully they will adjust it enough that you can comfortably wear them.
Are you using ice packs at night? That has helped me immensely! I hope things get fixed right for you too!

Thank you, he told me at my last check up that as soon as I healed enough for him to take some impressions he would get on it but it will take 4 weeks or so because he is making them from scratch - not 100% sure what that means considering he had to send my last impressions off to be made for the immediate dentures but I am impatiently waiting and cannot wait to get my new set in very high hopes that they look better than these, and I have not used ice at all and was unsure which would be best.. the ice or heat but I can say that when i use a heat compress it helps greatly with the pain.

Ice is best only the first 24-48 hours for swelling then once bleeding has subsided as well, heat is best after that. Hope you feel better! Good luck!

As I have said a few times i have alot of experience with dentures. As far as having to wait 4 weeoks to take impressions to make new teeth is ridiculous. I dont know where you had them done but if they were done at aspen or affortable they advertise how you dont have to wait for your dentures they can be done in one day. So them saying 4 weeks doesnt make any sense to me. To anyone who are not happy with there teeth when they get them make sure you let them know because they use the same teeth in your permanent denture. They only make the gumss from scratch. There not gonna give you new teeth. Its a waste of money and the teeth is whats experience. If your still in pain get some Orajel or Anbesol. It works great for pain and actually helps with the healing process. Take a q tip and put it on there and them wipe it on the swoolen areas. It might burn alittle but it will take the pain awhile and will help in wearing them. I hope this helps and I didnt make to many mistakes my eyes are blutty today.
Take care and God Bless

Thank you, he knows that I am unhappy with my top denture and has offered to remake them, he told me the teeth size isnt the issue but more that the teeth were put down to far in the gum part of the denture causing them to look to big, and man i hope he knows what he is talking about because the amount of disappointment I will have if i get a new set and wait and the teeth are just as large as the ones I have now. I am on day 4 now and the pain is beginning to get a little better to handle, I have also found some orajel mouth wash that helps greatly.

Hi Jennifer
I hope he is not talking about giving you your permanent denture??
He should be adjusting your temporary dentures until they it properly/
If he can't fix your temporary dentures I  certainly would not let him do
 my permanent dentures

Sharona knows a lot about dentures I would certainly ask her opinion

Perhaps you should confer with another dentist.  Many give free consultations
Please let us know what you re doing to help yourself

I was just wondering how everyone is doing as of today? I hope not too bad! I am on day 6 from my surgery and going to Aspen dental for my 2nd adjustments in the morning because I have sore spots the Dentures have rubbed from being too big and or rough spots. I will let you know how that goes too. I had 29 teeth extracted and asked for a detailed print out from billing but will demand it tomorrow. I got comfylites for my permanent Dentures as well but paid close to $8000 for everything. I think it was way too high and they should I would receive some sort of a refund but have been told nothing else since before surgery. So we will see...good luck all

Hi  Elisha Wilbur

$8,000 is a ot of money.   You will see what they have charged you for what  when you get an itimized bill.
If you are due a refund get it now before they  figure out a way not to refund it to you.

There is a blog asking what price  people payed on this site
I  believe  a chart on that blog that will  tell you what average charge most dentists charge
for different procedures that you can  can compare your charges to .
You may also lookup average prices dentists charge on the internet,
Have them make adjustments on your denture.

Tell them you are in pain and have them make all the adjustments you need.  Do not let them tell you that you have to get "Used" to pain.  The temps are important.  If they can't make good comfortable temps then they won't be able to make permanents dentures  that work for you

Good luck

Barbara,
The dentist is making me a new temporary denture for the top, I am only on day 5 from surgery and still have a bit to go before getting the others, I am waiting for the top gums to heal a bit so I can get new impressions done and a new top immediate denture made for me because the teeth in the one i got after extraction were misplaced in the denture and look huge ( I cant even close my mouth ) I HATE that I am having to wear them now, I think its fair enough to get good dentures the 1st time around but I am trying to stay positive and patient, its just really hard. He said it would take 4 weeks before the new ones were complete after the impressions were made and the thought of me going in public with the ones I have no terrify me.. they are awful

Hi  Jennifer
You must really tell that dental office that you are in pain with the lower denture and ask
them or tell them you must get another  adjustment  because the pain is unbearable
Insist with them
Do not let them get away with saying you will get used to them because no one
gets used to pain.
How much are you paying for your dentures???
What dental office are you using??

Hi Barbara, I have just returned home from the dentist, he did some adjustments on my bottoms and though still a little sore they are feeling much better, and it looks my tops will no longer fit, I am due in next Monday for new impressions to get started on my new top set, but I did express all my concerns this time and did not hold back and he was very helpful and also told me that I will do " try - ins " before the next top set is made to make sure they are what I want, so even though i will have no top teeth for about a month I am very happy that i will be able to see it all before they are made

Hi  Jennifer
Do nor order your permanent  dentures until the Temporary  dentures  have been corrected
and fit
If they can not  fix the temporary denture do not trust them  to make permanent dentures
Do not order   the permanent ones or pay for them until the temp  set fits.
They must not  hurt  you and you   have to be able to eat with them.
If you have ordered the permanent ones just call up and cancel the order
Tell him  your mother or your father or  the internet or your boyfriend   says
this is too soon to have them

First fix the temporary dentures
If they do not fit let him fix them
he should not make   you go without teeth
You paid for teeth
I hope he is replacing the temporary denture  and not putting
you into a permanent one now
It is too early for a permanent denture
You need time for your gums to heal  More then 6 months

If they can not fix or replace  the temps do not trust them with the permanent ones
You are doing better with this dentist  Do not let them push you around
It is your money and you are the customer
How much are you paying for the dentures???
Let us know what progress you are making
This is a learning blog for everyone
Good luck

He is making my new top immediate denture due to his own error in the first set that he made for me, so we are not moving on to permanent ones just yet :) and the ones he gave me no longer fit at all, he told me I had 2 choice, one he force them on and shove them and I would be in much pain or two I could just wait for the new set to be made.
I did not want that pain as I have tried and tried and they just simply will not go on so I agreed to go without until the new ones come in.

Hi  Jennifer
No Jennifer   there are NOT only 2 options
 there are 3 options
It just means more work for your dentist
You can not go without top teeth
You are living in a world and have to go out and see people

The 3rd option is to make the old denture work until you
get the correct  new temporary   by adjusting it
until it fits without jamming it on and hurting  you
It is just extra work for him but that is his job

Tell him your mother or your father or your husband or boyfriend
or your dental friends on the internet will not allow you
to be without teeth
Tell him you you are getting panic attacks at the thought of being
without teeth and it is not your fault
You have paid for a temporary
Stand up for yourself.   you are worth it

Sounds like maybe I should do something, I certainly do not want this to be my perm set I am only a little over 1 week out of surgery and the immediate dentures. I have an appointment for impressions on Monday April 23 and I will for sure ask him because its my understanding he is remaking my tops because of his own mistake and there would be no charge to me.

Yes its hard to tell the 2 Jennifers apart

One is Jennifer Mercado and the other is just Jennifer

We should ask one to say Jennifer #1 and the other to say Jennfer #2
