Glue not holding all day and the fixodent package says to only use once a day.

I recently got my full upper and lower dentures. After almost 4 months of no teeth I was excited to say the least. My dentures were loose from the start which my dentist said was because I have so little bone structure for them to grip onto. I went and purchased Fixodent plus superior hold. I have had issues from the start with the cream not holding the whole day. I read the package and it says not to use more than once a day. How is one supposed to eat with dentures that flop around and you can't apply more adhesive? Any suggestions???

Just a heads up for anyone having problems with swollen red burning mouth and lips. Also causing stomache problems...i wasnt aware that when using denture adhesive that contains zinc can only be used once a day. I used mine several times a day and it caused zinc poisoning, i thought it was an allergy at first, but later realized it wasnt an allergy, but just too much zinc. Please dont use zinc adhesives more than once a day, life will be miserable, especially when it hurts so much you cannot eat or drink.

I use zinc products.  Really important that your gums and dentures are completely dry before use.  Put them in and hold them in place for 5 seconds then bite down for 5 seconds so they seat properly.  Don't eat or drink for 10 minutes after putting them in.

Get dental implants. Yeah ok. Some of us cannot afford implants. That's why we have dentures in the first place.

I've bought cushion correct also. I asked the seller to send me English instructions and they did. I have yet to use it tho cuz Idk if I can use with soft reline or not and afraid to mess it up. Lol. If any1 knows please let me know. But English instructions say apply to denture then wet it then put in and bite down. Supposed to last 4 or 5 days. Then to get it off run under hot water and peel it off.

I use Cold Water and a Chop Stick and Tweezers to remove it.
It gets brittle when colder and is easier to remove IMHO.
Depending on what I eat I usually get 7-10 days out of it.

You can use it several times a day. If you are concerned about zinc, purchase the kind without. I use secure or fixodent without the flavoring. With fixodent, you have to replace at least once a day. Mine was more than that.

I have a similar problem mostly with my lowers. Once the dentist put the permanent lining in it helped a little. I use a mix. First I make sure my treeth are really dry before I add the adhesive. I use the secure paste. Then I add fixedident powder in a light coat over top.. That works from 6 a till about 4 p. I have reapplied on my bottoms when they loosen. I have also accepted there are just things I can't eat any more too. Without pins holding my denture in place Hogies (subs) are out, s are nuts, and anything I have to take a bite into.. Small pieces, especially of well cooked meat is a little easier. Unfortunately, test was the sacrifice I made to be pain free and to have solid smile for the first time in years.

Not at all. It feels a lot better than any thing else I've tried. Lol. And easiest to clean up. I tried secure for 1st time today. Its for sure secure hold just feels thick under denture and its after 10 and I'm beginning to worry if I will get it loose. Lol. But the polident powder is really what I like the best so far as far as working and feeling.

just a little fyi , if you will take 2x2 gauze squares and rub them across the roof of your mouth and the gums it will remove the powder adhesive simply without a bunch of mess , and i assume it will work with cream also.....

I just got my stitches removed today and a soft reline for the first time. It feels a little tighter but as I was eating dinner this evening, still eating soft pasta..I tried to chew it some, and dentures were a bit floppy. I can imagine if I try to eat anything that I have to chew a bit more I'll need some adhesive on them. Came here to see what everyone is recommending before I drop money on stuff that I don't really have to be spending. Was hoping the dentist would give me samples to try but no luck there. He said to just try this reline first..I think I'll need something else though.

Do companies offer samples to try their products out before you buy them? And what's this Cushion correct stuff like? Does it actually work better than otc adhesive stuff we can buy here?

You should be seeing your dentist more often. Dentures are only good for 4-5 years and need relining in-between. If they don't fit from the beginning, see your dentist, again and again till he is tired of seeing your face and finally fixes them right.  Your gums are constantly changing, something that can't be fixed with adhesive. Think of your dentures like the tires on your car. Maintenance, rotation and replacement. -  Never had a real problem in my 25 years with dentures. -  If your dentist is blowing you off with excuses spend some quality time in his waiting room and share your experience with the other waiting patients. Works like a charm.

I am in 4 weeks of getting top and Bottom Dentures. I have gone back twice to get the Soft liner put in. It will not stay attached on the sides. I had to rip it out on count of flopping in my Mouth. My Dentures will not fit tight now. I have used Polident, Fixodent and the Powder nothing seems to work. I went today and got the Soft liner kit to do myself. Is that a good idea?

Mary I LOVE polident powder extra strength its amazing to me. I called secure and asked for a sample and they sent me whole tube. I've used it for first time today and it works extremely well too. I've had in since 9am and I just ate supper and its still holding really well. Hoping I don't have hard time removing tonight. Lol. If u Google secure dental adhesive and then call they will prob send sample too. A lot of ppl on here say the powder adhesive or secure is the best and I do agree. Good luck finding 1u like. I tried everything in first couple weeks but now month in and the powder or secure is what I'm sticking with. This has been a trial and error adventure for me and I'm sure for and everyone else. Lol

The top Denture stays in place but the bottom still not fitting correct. I go back the 23rd for the Gel. I'm praying it will be to where I can eat Solid Food. I'm still eating soft Foods. It's interesting.  You actually put it on and wet it.  Yes, WET IT.
Nothing else like it that I've ever found?  (Not tried Olivafix $$$ yet)
Pretty much the exact opposite of Secure which is best applied dry.  Very dry.
Nice to have options!

I use SECURE but really what is the best?

I've found what works for one person my not be ideal for another when it comes to dentures.  Personally I've tried almost everything out there with the exception of Olivafix (Switzerland) and I just ordered some of that.  Secure is my "Go To" adhesive.  Protefix is my second favorite.  If you REALLY want to "CEMENT" them in, try this "Crazy Glue" method outlined here from a friend of mine:

Some occasions call for cementing in the dentures - mainly my lower partial. I accomplish this by using both paste adhesive and powder.

I call this paste and powder combo "crazy glue".

First put in the paste (I use Poligrip). I squeeze a bit in and then kind of smooth it around with my finger. After that I lightly spray with water and then sprinkle on Fixodent or Wernets powder (spread that by sort of shaking the denture lightly - kind of like flouring a cake pan). Then, lightly spray with water again and place in your mouth.

I used this on my lower partial whenever I know I'm going out for a sticky, chewy meal. For me, this holds quite tightly and often I can't get it out when I am ready to go to bed. Usually it comes out in the morning after a cup of hot tea.

Update

I thought I would add another little tidbit of information ....

Another combination that works for me is to use Poligrip Strips in my lower and then sprinkle a bit of Fixodent powder over them. It really keeps my lower in place and keeps all the food particles out. I've had that lasting me all day - three meals and a snack - and it is still in snug at the end of the day!

Poligrip strips seem to work well on their own, too, and they are highly portable since they come in little individual packets. The strips help fill in those areas that may be a bit open from shrinkage, at least until the next reline.

REMINDER: Just remember that you do NOT want to use paste adhesives until your extraction sites are healed! Until then stick with just powder or wafers!

I was just wondering this last night! If using both would make a stronger all day hold. I didn't know if it would make too strong of a hold, definitely want to be able to take these things out once a day! I was going to ask earlier but it slipped my mind. Thanks Ted!

I use polident extra strength powder for normal everyday but I got secure about week or so ago. It held so good like cement I've decided it will b used when we go anywhere. Lol. Like out to eat family functions etc. The powder tho works really well for me. But I also have ordered sum of the protofix. Will let everyone know. I'm fairly new to dentures so I'm trying everything and open to all suggestions

I just called Secure yesterday and should get a free sample box in the mail in week or two. She said there would be a small tube, a few of the strips and cleaners in it also. All companies should do this! It would help a lot of people out when trying the different products.
I've been using the polident powder that you recommended to me and it has been working great for me! I'm still doing the salt water rinses a few times a day (because of a bit of swelling still hanging around) so I don't leave my dentures in all day yet.
Can't wait to hear about the protofix!

Ann - check this out:

My hardest word was Yosemitee.  Came out more like Yo-thhemm-id-ee.
NOT GOOD when you're a Rock Climber! :-)
I still need to speak slowly at times or I can slur some words.
Speak Slowly Ted!

This is from a friend on another forum Thanks DaveyB!

Learning to speak correctly again... the easy way after getting dentures.

Learning to speak right again is an issue that some of have. And to say it honestly it is an extreme embarrassment and and a frustration that is hard to bare. And being tongue tied because of a new denture is a problem many would not wish on their worse enemy. Some people really do get and have serious mental stress over it, and others fluff it off and laugh about the mispronounced words they say.

But in time we all learn to speak  clearly as to what we fell is correct in time.

But some of us have to face co-workers, strangers and just don't know what to do,  Many wonder if they will ever speak right again and fear saying anything causing new issues and worries we really don't need.

One key that many do not realize is that they might speak to quickly and the tongue is all over the place actually pushing the bottom denture loose. And of course this is why so many have bottom denture problems staying in... if they speak a lot.

Also the key is to slow down and take your time saying things. The real issue we don't realize or see right off is the speed of saying words and how we say them depending on accent.

Also remember that there is a new bottom denture and we loose the retention as the tongue learns it's new boundaries and push it out. And we think the bottom denture is just loose and it needs to stay rock solid. Tongue control as many will tell you does come naturally in time. And that's the real secret key to it staying in place.

Well the real problem really is because your tongue doesn't know where to go and is use to what teeth are lack of you had and is still use to doing that which it was original taught are learned to do over the years of saying things everyday.

Once you learn how to control your tongue many issues with the bottom denture moving does seem to come under control more then you might imagine. Strengthening and using the tongue muscles makes you able to keep your bottom denture in place with out adhesives. But remember until your healed the bottom denture is a a obstacle in many ways.

Many have great problems or trouble with S words, F words, TH sounds. Some people get a whistle with certain words others hear a lips like sound. and all of it is embarrassing to us even if others don't catch it.

Many things can be done to stop the problem but most dentist will tell you they have no clue are you'll get over it. And in many cases some will go to a speech therapist paying big bucks only to find out a few secrets we actually learned as kids will help this problem go away fast.

As many know some people will perfect their speech that they have lost from dentures by reading out loud. but the key is reading out the word that you mispronounce out loud 3-5 times until you get it sounding right to you.

Another way is to practice your ABC's out loud saying them slowly and clearly. Also practice them phonetically Aye- Baa- CA- Duh - Eh...etc..

If your words when you speak have you sounding like daffy duck or worse yet Elmer Fudd, Sylvester the cat or some other outrageous  over the top cartoon character then you need to  really step up your game.

Practice counting from 30 -80 out loud several times a day. Believe me this is the secret key to many words and pronunciations.

And if you hear a number sounding wrong when you say it. Repeat and say it a few times and let your tongue find the right spot to pronounce it correctly.

Also practice your vowels and try to do all this several times the first week as often as you can. It really works!

After a while you will be speaking beautifully.  I did it and in 3 days i had all my pronunciations back... if you mess up on a word in a conversation practice that word later in the day say it 3-5 times trying to make your mouth form the word correctly... then give it a rest.  Oh and always pay  real good attention to where your tongue is when you say it.

And now a days I only sound  really funny to myself and others when I take my teeth out and try to speak on the phone.

Some people as we know often might practice these old tongue twisters daily.

Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers.
A peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked.
If Peter Piper picked a peck of pickled peppers,
Where's the peck of pickled peppers Peter Piper picked?

Picky people pick Peter Pan Peanut-Butter, 'tis the peanut-butter picky people pick.

Ann, I had speech therapy as a child and it served me well when I got dentures. You have to practice speaking and notice where you are placing your tongue. Meaning, your tongue should be behind your lower teeth when saying an s. My teeth on my dentures feel smaller than my natural ones so I was over compensating with my tongue so it was over my teeth. Bingo, my old lisp was back. Drove me nuts. I had to really concentrate on where my tongue was. I work with the public all day and hate sounding like Elmer fudd. Practice will make perfect.

Ted & Annie, thanks for the great advice! I've been having some challenges talking also. I have the whistle and lisp sound, when talking. It drives me crazy. I've been practing a lot while I'm alone, driving or just home with the kids. Reading aloud helps a lot! It's work in progress but getting better!
