Help for my mom with her Dentures.

Hey all! So I'm a new denture wearer myself and I was talking to my mother about her dentures. I found out she cannot wear either of the sets she paid for because of one causing sores and cuts and the other one is too big. She is at a loss for what to do about and I was wondering if anybody has experienced this before? Or is there anything she can do since they're wanting to charge her for a third set although the first 2 she paid for did not fit and she can't wear them?

Hi. Was the 1st set she got Unmediated and how long after did she get the 2nd set?

No, the first set was supposed to be the permanent set, she got them about 6 months after extractions. The second set was made after the dentist had tried to adjust the first set to the point that the "gum" was clear and about to break. They made her pay in full for both sets. She's frustrated at this point and can't afford to pay for a third set from the same dentist.

You should check if Denturists are legal in your state. They are licensed for Dentures. That's pretty much all they make legally and mouth guards. They are legal in Canada and I believe in the UK. Ask your mom if they've ever put a paste in her mouth while doing an adjustment. It helps determine exactly where the discomfort is so they can trim the denture in those spots.

For the 1st set getting them no sooner them 6 mths after extractions is a good sign of them fitting well and no need for a Reline. Do you know where it's causing the sores? For the 2nd set if they are too big and the only issue she should get a Reline. That's when they take an impression and it better be a good one with all her border moulding and the very end of the back of her mouth where her gums end and then "reconstruct" (Reline) the inside of her denture to fit. There's alot more steps to it. I posted steps to A Reline on this forum if you search for it.

If this could help at all take notes so she knows what to tell them to do. That's too bad that they charged full amount for both. Frustrating.

Omg!!! Tell her to go see a Denturist! We are all human and make mistakes but I'm hoping a Denturist there will know what they're doing!

I am texting her the information as you're sending it. She said that they did the paste and found where was causing the sores. The biggest thing she's complained to me about the second set is that the part that goes in the front under your smiley behind the top lip (I can't think of the name for it) digs up into her lip too much and they used teeth that were even larger than the first ones. I looked up a denturist close to her and gave her their information and told her to call them.

Yassss! You go girl. Get her on it. I'm not sure about the USA but in Canada the cost of Dentures from Denturists are also cheaper. Okay unfortunately the teeth can't be changed. Sorry. The flange in the front can be!!!! That happens alot to people for example with Immediate dentures. When gums recede the denture is too big and I guess in her case maybe the denture made too big to begin with because it's been over 6mrhs. They should be able to trim that no problem!!!! 1mm or a hairline is like a mile in the mouth.

A Reline can also help the flange area but it's like $300 here. If it's only that issue they should adjust it for free! Doesn't even take 5min. We don't charge for adjustments at my work especially if they got the dentures from us

Yes! Like under where her nose is. She showed me the sore from it and it looks like someone has just took a credit card or something blunt but thin and constantly pushes it up.

Me too! I just got my immediates earlier this week and I already have way less problems with mine even during the healing process (with the exception of a good sized sore that I need to call my dentist about Monday) than she has the entirety of it.

Good to hear you're not having issues. I hope things go well for you. In case you don't know this journey will test your patience. Your denture will get loose while your gums are healing for 6 mths. I hope your Dentist will be there for you and adjust your denture when needed. If you ever have questions I'm here and will help the best I can.

Josie, I was looking at your profile and actually wanted to ask a question about my immediates. I'm on day 5 of them and I honestly have been taking them out during the day for like 20 min at a time to let my gums get some rest, but the first time I slept without them (the end of my second day per my dentist's instructions) when I put them in the next morning, it hurt so bad I thought I wasn't going to get them back in. Until I go get my stitches removed, is it an issue if I just continue doing what I've been doing and sleeping with them? I know it's not recommended but that pain was unbearable.

It sounds like to me that they can do an adjustment and cut that down some and that would help tremendously. I know I've had mine adjusted quite a few times like that until they got it right and now all I do is put cushion grip in and it gives me that extra cushion that I need so it's not so hard against the gums and I can eat anything I want. If she's 95 years old I really don't think she needs to go investing in yet third pair they need to be able to adjust them for her or she may be able to do it with one of those Emery boards just a little tiny bit at a time. It is save a lot of money. Good luck with it all.

R.spurgin95 it's ok. It's not the end of the world if you temporarily leave them in at night. I wouldn't want you to be in pain and I'm sure your Dental office doesn't either. Make salt water your best friend for 6 mths! And rinse like 6x a day if you can. If you're out and about make a bottle water your salt water bottle and label it and carry that around with you. It will help your healing and even if you have your teeth in while rinsing that's ok. Try not to make it a habit leaving your teeth in at night long term.

She scheduled an appt to see if they can reline any of it at all to make it more comfortable until she gets a new set and in a couple of months she has an appt with the dentist I went to to see about getting a different set.

Did she schedule the Reline with the Denturist? Why get a new set from a Dentist? Why not use a Denturist?

She did not. She says it's cheaper and she cant afford a denturist.

Oh man that's too bad! Ugh I wonder if it's because they are not legal in all states there yet and that's why they cost more. Here they are cheaper as the fee guide is different.

Yea, I'm honestly not sure. From what I've read about them they are cheaper, so shes probably just being difficult and not wanting to put in the work to get a better fit. I'm not really sure.
