hi all, my name is Tommy I'm 63 years old and got dentures over a year ago,, I joined the web site with hope that maybe talking will help with my depression since getting my dentures I never wear the uppers can't stand the way they feel, have to wear the bottoms because my dentist left 4 teeth in that are now discolored from the root canals. I cannot talk clear with the lowers so I never really join in conversation, don't like being around people anymore, I never attend function anymore, never go out to eat, always have an excuse for why I can't, I need to find a new job but to embarrassed to apply, all I know is I cant continue going on like this its effecting my health, my personality, and work. I'm sure I'm not the only one that feels this way. How do you get throught this and cope??

Hey Tommy, when I first got my upper denture, it felt weird at first too. Felt like I wanted to gag and throw up, but I just pushed through it and got used to it after a couple of days. The gagging desire was gone by the next day. I think it’s an adjustment phase we all go through. You need to practise talking, it will get easier after a while. If you’re worried about what people might think, I say who gives a crap about them. If they’re going to be like that to someone going through a rough patch, it shows what kind of people they really are, and you’re better off without them.

I think it’s a metal shift we all go through. Stay positive, I know it sounds like hippie-talk, but your attitude towards yourself can be changed at any time. You're the one in control of this. This is not something that could defeat you. Dentures make us sexy as hell don’t forget.

Hi Tommy I just got dentures a week ago. I am still getting used to tops. But the more you wear them the more normal they feel. I am still "learning" to talk with them. I practice when I'm driving..If I feel like I'm not talking clearly to someone I just let them know that I just got dentures and I am still learning to talk with them. The people that matter wont care that you have dentures. If you have a good set people really cant tell you have them. Put the tops in and wear them for a few days, you will get use to them and how they feel. Practice talking when you are by yourself. My main problems are words starting with SH. So I practice saying words that start with them. Be proud and never be ashamed of having them.

No sir I am not. I Have gum disease so my teeth were all decayed and breaking off along with being In pain most of the time. I hated smiling and tried not to. I felt like getting dentures was just a dream for me because of the cost. But finally I got a job that offers excellent and very affordable isurance and started the process. I am very proud of my dentures and smile every time I look in a mirror. I am single right now and I do wonder if I were to get into a serious relationship if having dentures would cause problems but the way I look at it is if they can't accept it then I don't need them in my life. Please don't be embarrassed to have dentures. There is absolutely nothing to be embarrassed about. Millions of people have them.

I have had my uppers for a year now. I love them. No they are not my natural teeth but they are very nice. I feel once you go through the process of removing the bad teeth, the weeks of getting fitted and the learning of how to wear them is a must. You paid for them and you know you need them. But first you must give them a chance to work by using them daily. After a month or so of daily usage they will be almost second nature. Like I said not the originals but a workable option.

I guess its just me, when i first got them i could not stand the adhesive on the roof of my mouth and trying to remove it, along with the gaging and choking feeling so i just gave up, the lowers i wear, i have too because of the four teeth left and you can see them when my mouth is partially open, but even those are uncomfortable, and when i eat or chew gum they seem to irritate the side of  my tongue. I have been back to the dentiest for that issue, and according to him its something i have to get use to, realy after a year you think i would be use to it. oh well what can one do???

Tommy, I'm 46 and have an upper denture and I only told my close friends and family and understand feeling embarrassed about them. I would think at 63 people would be a little more understanding about the situation and like Pam said millions of people have them. I didn't even know a few had them till I got mine.  Next year I will be getting the bottoms pulled and 4 mini implants put in for a snap in lower denture. After I get that paid off I will be getting implants for the upper also. The implants just seem so much easier but cost more.  I have attached a few Youtube video of them.

They aren't cheap but you have to shop around, im looking at around 10-12k for both upper & lower.........There are some places that charge 55-60k and who could afford that.

Tommy maybe find a new dentist. They can be adjusted to where you dont gag. The bottoms can also be adjusted. Your dentures should be comfortable. I dont use adhesive on my top dentures. The suction from the pallette keeps them in even though I do have a bad habit of playing with them and pushing them out with my tongue. I have had my dentures 1 1/2 weeks. At first I couldn't wait to take them out. After getting them adjusted,.it made a big difference. So much more comfortable. Now I wait until right before going to bed to take them out where as before, as soon as I ate supper they came out. Having a good dentist makes a world of difference when it comes to having comfortable dentures and I can say my dentist is great. If yours is telling you, you just have to get used to it, he is not a very good dentist. He should be doing all he can to make sure they are a comfortable fit.

My dentist told me the upper would be 6 implants and would cost around $6,000 but he couldnt give me a price until 4 or 5 months later when he can see how the bone healed.

When I get the bottom done I would need 4 implants.

Below is a link for an article I found on price for implants.

There goes my tax return the next 2 years.  :-)

I hope you can get your implants. Have you tried a reline to see if that would help them stay in until you get your implants? Since my swelling has went down, mine are starting to get pretty loose so I may have to start using adhesive until my reline. I guess I'm lucky. I've used it once on my uppers and it didn't really bother me. I just don't see the need to use it since right now they stay in without it. I hope you can start to become more comfortable with wearing them. Just remember if you don't tell someone you have them then chances are they will never know.

Hi Tommy...I'm 7 months now with a full upper/partial lower. Let me assure you, you ARE just as good as everyone else! Why would you think otherwise? Did I feel different about myself? Yes, yes, yes!! In a good way. I don't have to be afraid of meeting and speaking with new people. I don't have to hide my smile anymore (I love to laugh). I've regained my confidence about being around people and socializing. I was grateful to be able to eat almost normally again both at home & out. No more worries about the affect having bad teeth was having on my overall health. God doesn't make mistakes Tommy - don't ever feel that you're not as good as anyone else and don't let what others may say/do influence how you feel about yourself. People who truly love/care won't give a damn whether you have a tooth in your head or not. Nobody outside of that really matters. Keep your head up, walk and smile with confidence & pride, keep being the best that you can be.

Tommy....you are just as good as everyone else. Don't think that way about yourself. Having dentures does not make you a lesser person. When I allow myself to reflect on it, I sometimes can not believe I no longer have my own teeth. When I was younger I never thought I would have to get dentures. I guess it's just something you don't think about when you are young and have no problems with your teeth. My teeth were great until gum disease took over. Never even had a cavity. Yes sometimes it's hard to accept but I am no longer in pain and my teeth are pretty again. Plus my grandkids love it when I take them out. They are amazed by it. They are to little to understand why granny can take her teeth out and they can't....lol. Never look down on yourself just because you have dentures.

wow Pam almost similar situation, always took care of my teeth, my kids use to laugh at me cause my dentist gave me my Owen personal gas mask, what memories they gave me with that. Anyway all of a sudden i started with infect ons, for a year i was living on antibiotics, which cause me to have c-diff 2 times, then the teeth would break have a root canal and wind up with another infection or that root canal not taking. As far as the depression or low self esteem, i just cant seem to help it, sometimes it feels like i this heavy weight on top of my shoulders. I have tried everything to feel good about my self, went as far as buying a new car, lasted a week and right back to were i started. i will say this, you and the others that reply to my post does help a little,,, ,

Mine started off as a toothache that lasted 3 months straight. Sometimes I feel if I would have gotten that tooth pulled maybe the gum disease wouldn't have progressed this far, but I'll never know. I'm glad our posts at least help you out some. I wish you would feel better about yourself. Just keep telling yourself there is no shame in wearing dentures.

Pamela i think what bothers me the most, and what really has me down,  is that i don't have my teeth anymore and that it's so hard to be my self and carry a intelligent conversation with some one. I thought  having dentures would make my life easier, not worrying about teeth problems, having all my teeth and not just missing a few. was i ever wrong. like i said this fourm is helping me some, i wish more pepol would chime in so i can hear what they are going through and how they are handeling it.

This forum is pretty dead. Most posts I see are at least a year old. When you are alone put your teeth in and practice talking out loud. This helps a lot. That is what I did, but I did it in front of my daughter since I am very rarely alone. She got a kick out of it wondering why I was talking to myself..lol. Some letters will be harder than others especially S and SH so you may have to try saying them by putting your tongue in different positions to see what position to learn to put it when pronouncing them. With practice it gets better and easier I promise. It will take a couple of weeks at least of continuously wearing your dentures. I have had mine 3weeks and I can pretty much talk normally now and eat anything. But I also keep them in all the time unless I am sleeping. When I got them, my dentist told me all I ask is that you give them a chance. I wondered what he meant by that. After a couple of days of wearing them, I understood what he meant. At times I just wanted to yank them out but I kept hearing his words so I kept them in. I am glad I did. They are starting to feel somewhat normal now and are quite comfortable. It just takes time and patience.

your old teeth are gone. no goin' back. that's a fairly hard thing to get a handle on. but if you keep thinking you wish you could go back then you will never get better. you need to put those top teeth in at home and start reading the newspaper outload every night. you will get better. before you know it you'll be going out with them in and every once in a while you'll even bust a smile. then you know your on the way back.

I have had my top dentures for a year now and I hate to tell you Tommy but I still feel like I will never be comfortable with them. I have been to the dentist many times but I feel unless the dentist has dentures they cannot really empathize with you. I think the prerequisite for my next dentist is that they wear dentures. I have learned how to eat better with them as time goes by. I doubt I will ever enjoy a pizza or steak again. I find cutting up meat in tiny pieces helps. One good plus--I have lost about 17 lbs and it would not hurt me to lose a few more. I did find a reline kit on Amazon and I relined my teeth and have to use very little adhesive. I also bought Secure on Amazon and it does hold the teeth for eating. All I can say is keep trying. I'm sure it will get easier for us.

Sara i don't even wear the tops just the bottoms are hard enough,, cant talk right,, I'm very unsociable,,  and others Can see I'm not my old self,,  i really miss being able to carry a conversation, very hard to pronounce words and when people say what i know they don't understand me... my son was married a few weeks back and what a nightmare,, don't get me wrong the wedding was perfect, but i have family i haven't seen in years and was not able to carry a real conversation, a few words here and there,, and that bothered me allot,, and forget about photos,,, eating is hard i knife and fork most my meals, and like you i cut very small,,, i miss vegetable, nuts, i would eat them raw, raddish cabagge hearts carrotts, broccoli,  the nuts i put in my nutri bullet to a fine powder, and that melts in my mouth,, the list goes on.... i mean i could go on for ever about my daily life but I'm sure you are going through the same thing as me. thank you for responding

Tommy. I am into a month with my dentures. As soon as I would leave the dentist I would immediately sit in my car and gag and puke and would spit the upper out. All I would hear from the dentist to his assistants and my Hubs that it takes time. My upper if placed in my mouth falls
right back out so I have been using/trying different adhesives since day two. Spending at least 30 bucks a week. What works three days in a row might not work on the 4th day! It's a hit or miss kind of thing. I went online and found an adhesive called "Secure". It is made with all food products. Used it today for the first time and my lower nor the upper has moved not one single time!! I even went out to breakfast this morning and was so afraid to order a capacino coffee but did and there was no nasty oozing like the other products I have stocked up here in my drawer. It is completely water proof and no oozing slimy crap at all. I even ate blueberry pancakes, eggs/bacon and hash browns. I am so thrilled and it is 5:20 pm here in Texas and they are still holding in tight!!! I am thrilled beyond belief! The lady that replied to my Email that sells the Secure was so nice and sent me samples to try before I ordered. She sent me a full tube of the Secure, cleansing tablets and lower cushion group adhesive strips. The website is www.Securedenture.com and I am going to wait a few days before ordering just to make sure that this is still working for me. They have a phone number 1-800-641-7555. Hope this might help you.

Oh, had I know the Secure was made with all natural products I would have ordered some by now. But now it will have to wait as it is unlikely to arrive before I move out of province. Loose dentures it is for the next month!
